This study was conducted to develope noninvasive fecal PCR assay for detecting the Helicobacter species in dogs. From the DNA isolated from fecal samples, and a region of the 16S rRNA gene conserved among Helicobacter spp. was amplified In comparison with gastric biopsy test, the fecal PCR assay showed high specificity(100%) and sensitivity(96%). The prevalence of Helicobacter spp. infection in privately owned pet dogs in Korea detemined by the fecal PCR assay was 72.1%. the fecal PCR assay determined in this study can a new noninvasive test detecting Helicobacter spp. infection in dogs.
The inhibitory effects of different Bifidobacterium spp. on the growth of Helicobacter pylori (HP) were investigated. A significant suppression of HP growth occurred only when HP was inoculated onto a petri dish containing 0.1 mg/ml of Bifidobacterium spp. When HP was separately cultured with B. breve K-110, B. catenulatum K-309, B magnum K-311, B. magnum K-321, and B. cuniculi K-513, the urease activity was also inhibited by these Bifidobacterium spp. Therefore, it appears that these Bifidobacterium spp. excrete a heat-labile inhibitory component for HP growth into the culture medium. Although most organic acids produced by the Bifidobacterium spp. inhibited the growth of HP, the HP growth was not inhibited by the physiological concentrations of organic acids produced in bifidobacteria-cultured media. Accordingly, these results suggest that some Bifidobacterium spp. may produce antibiotic-like compounds (bacteriocins).

This study was aimed to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter spp. in privately owned pet dog's oral cavity samples (saliva, dental plaque, vomitus) and fecal samples in Korea and to evaluate the potential route for transmission. Total 100 patients dogs attending one Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital were examined by Helicobacter genus-specific PCR assay and these dogs were divided into two groups whether they had gastrointestinal signs (vomiting, nausea and diarrhea) or not. The total detection rate of Helicobacter spp. by PCR in saliva, dental plaque and fecal samples was 23%, 1% and 68% respectively. The difference of prevalence with regarding the gastrointestinal sings was not significant. In vomitus, two of seven samples had positive results. These results suggested that Helicobacter spp. are present in the oral cavity although they were present in very low number and are not like to be normal oral flora of the oral cavity and Helicobacter spp. in dogs could be transmitted through oral-oral, gastrooral and fecal-oral route.
A 12-year-old, castrated male, mixed dog presented with a history of gradual abdominal distention for a year and anorexia recently, with abdominal radiographs showing a gastric pylorus distention. A solitary, pedunculated, heterogeneous mass arising from the mucosal layer in the pylorus with intact wall layers was identified during ultrasound and computed tomography. The gastric muscular layer was evenly thick. After surgical excision of the mass, histological examination confirmed hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy with polypoid growth and Helicobacter spp. infiltrating the gastric mucosal epithelium. This is the first reported diagnostic imaging case of hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy with Helicobacter spp. in a dog.
Several infectious agents are considered to be causes of cancer in human, mainly hepatitis B and C viruses, high-risk human pailloma viruses, Helicobacter pylori, Clonorchis sinensis, and Opisthorchis viverrini. Here we described the evident research and the association between Helicobacter spp. and biliary tract cancer particularly cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). Global epidemiological studies have suggested that Helicobacter spp. are possible risk factors for biliary tract diseases. Molecular studies support a linkage of Helicobacter spp. with CCA development. H. pylori, H. bilis, and H. hepaticus, are found in CCA, but the most common species are H. pylori and H. bilis. The type of CCA are associated with Helicobacter spp. include extrahepatic CCA, and common bile duct cancer. Up to the present, however, the results from different regions, materials and methods, sub-sites of cancer, and controls have not been consistent, thus introducing heterogeneity. Therefore, a comparison between co-Helicobacter spp.-CCA in the countries with low and high incident of CCA is required to settle the question. Furthermore, clarifying variation in the role of Helicobacter species in this CCA, including pathogenesis of CCA through enhanced biliary cell inflammation and proliferation, is necessary.
For evaluating the effect of triple therapy on eradication of gastric Helicobacter species infection in dogs, 7 dogs that had naturally acquired Helicobacter spp. infections were administered amoxicillin, metronidazole and omeparazole orally for 14 days. Changes of infection state were determined by urease test for gastric biopsies and Helicobacter specific PCR analysis for gastric biopsies and fecal samples at 7, 14 days after triple therapy and 30 days after cessation of triple therapy. Although negative results for urease test were obtained 6 of 7 dogs at 14 days after starting triple therapy, PCR analysis for gastric biopsies and fecal samples showed negative results in 3 and 4 dogs respectively. At 30 days after cessation of triple therapy, all tests showed negative results in 3 dogs. Based on these results, diagnostic tests for detercting Helicobacter spp. infection are recommended in dogs having chronic gastritis sign (usually intermittent vomiting) and triple therapy described in this study can be applied for eradicating the organism if the animals were proved to be infected.

Prevalence of Helicobacter infection in pet dogs and positive relations between the presence of Helicobacter app. and gastritis were studied. Twenty-one dogs, which died of various disease, were referred from three animal hospitals and necropsied. Upon histopathological examination, Helicobacter-like organisms (HLO) were observed only in the gastric mucosa of 5 (23.5%) out of the 21 stomachs. The bacteria mainly colonized in the mucus, gastric pits, and the lumen of gastric glands. Regardless of HLO infection, there was mild to moderate lymphocytic infiltration in fundic and pyloric mucosa. Average gastritis scores of the group infected with HLO were 1.250${\pm}$0.214 and 1.833${\pm}$0.167 in the fundic and pyloric mucosa, whereas those of uninfected group were 1.000${\pm}$0.165 and 1.625${\pm}$0.239, respectively. Accordingly, we concluded that no association exists between HLO infection and gastritis.

Helicobacter pylori infects the mucosa, induces chronic inflammation and ulcers, and is known as a biological carcinogen. Antibiotics are used as therapeutic agents for H. pylori, but there are problems such as resistance. Thus, research is being conducted on the use of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as an alternative therapeutic agent. There have been many studies on LAB related to kimchi. However, studies related to Gajami Sikhae, a traditional fermented seafood in Korea, are insufficient. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of LAB isolated from Gajami Sikhae on H. pylori and its use as a probiotic. Forty species of LAB isolated from Gajami Sikhae were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus brevis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, and Weisella paramesenteroides, and 10 strains of 40 species were selected through liquid inhibition assay of H. pylori. The selected LAB supernatant at 1%, 5%, and 10% had a growth inhibitory effect on H. pylori 52, 51, e-53, and 309. The adjusted pH of 7.0 was used for the LAB culture supernatant, in reference to a study that the growth of H. pylori is affected by acid. All 10 strains of LAB at 5% and 10% concentration suppressed the growth of H. pylori 52, and 7 strains of LAB at 10% concentration suppressed the growth of H. pylori e-53. LAB also had the effect of suppressing the activity of urease. Finally, LAB isolated from Gajami Sikhae is expected to be useful for eradicating and preventing H. pylori.
Enterococcus faecium MJ-14, having strong antilisterial activity, was isolated from Korean fermented food, Meju. MJ-14 showed the same phenotypic characteristics, but different sugar utilization, as reference strain, E. faecium KCCM12118. It could utilize D-xylose, amygdaline, and gluconate, whereas E. faecium KCCM12118 could not. Optimal condition for bacteriocin production by E. faecium MJ-14 was at $37^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.0. Bacteriocin activity appeared in mid exponential phase and increased rapidly up to stationary phase. Activity was significantly promoted in MRS broth containing 3.0% glucose, 1.5% lactose, 2.0% peptone, or 1.5% tryptone. Bacteriocins effectively inhibited Enterococcus faecalis and Listeria spp. of Gram-positive bacteria, and Helicobacter pylori of Gram-negative bacteria, but did not inhibit yeasts and molds. They were stable against heat (for 30 min at $100^{\circ}C$), pH (3.0-9.0), long-term storage (for 60 days at 4 or $-20^{\circ}C$), and enzymatic digestion by catalase, proteinase K, papain, lysozyme, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and lipase, etc. Bacteriocin activity was completely inhibited by protease and pepsin, and 50% by ${\alpha}$-amylase. Studies on PCR detection of enterocin structural genes revealed bacteriocins are identical to enterocins A and B.
