The helical flow regime was investigated by using DPIV when the rotating Reynolds number is small. The wall slits were azimuthally located along the inner wall of outer cylinder and the slits number of each model was 9 and 18, another plain wall model was also studied for comparison purpose. The helical vortex flow regime can be observed in all the three models. The negative temperature gradients determine the direction of the rotation and movement of the helical vortex. But the helical wavy vortex flow can only be found in the plane and 9-slit models. And the result showed that the existence of slit wall accelerated the transition process.
In this study, spur and helical box models of an existing machine tool are investigated using structural and fatigue analyses. As the helical box model is shown to have less stress and deformation than those characteristics of the spur box model, the helical box has more strength and more transmission efficiency on the structure. In terms of fatigue analysis, the helical box model has more repeated fatigue strength than that of the spur box model. These study results can be effectively utilized in the design of real gear boxes of machine tools by anticipating and investigating prevention and durability against damage.
A 3-dimensional helical rod finite element is devloped for the dynamic analysis of cylindrical springs. Element matrices are formulated using the Galerkin's method, and an exact static deflection curve is used as a shape function. Because the resultant mass and stiffness matrices of the model are symmetric, effective direct solution method can easily be applied for analysing dynamic behavior of springs. The model is used to analyze the dynamic characteristics of a typical automotive valve spring. The effectiveness of the developed helical rod element is verified by comparing the results of the proposed method with those of a classical theory and experiments. The helical element developed in this study is superior to a straight beam element and a 2-dimensional curved beam element for this problem.
A helical vane is applied to reduce the magnitude of the impulse wave discharged from the exit of a duct. A shock tube with an open end is used to investigate the effect of the helical vanes on the impulse wave magnitude. Four different types of helical vanes are installed into the low-pressure tube of shock tube. The magnitude of the incident shock wave is varied below 1.25, and the magnitude of impulse wave is measured using a pressure transducer mounted on a wedge probe. Instant images of the impulse wave are obtained by means of the Schlieren optical method. The present experimental results show that the helical vane considerably reduces the magnitude of the impulse wave and the vane effects are more remarkable for stronger incident shock wave.
The tooth profile of helical gear that is manufactured by the rack cutter consists of the involute curve and the trochoid curve. However, gear designers are very hard to calculate the exact profile because it needs very complex information about the gear manufacturing. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop the automatic generation program for the helical gear using the Solid Works API. First, involute and trochoide coordinates by the rack cutter are calculated. Using the data, Visual Basic program for the helical gear model is coded. This work gives us the quick helical gear modeling and can be used as the modeling for the finite element analysis.
Shape memory alloy (SMA) helical springs have found a large number of different applications in industries including biomedical devices and actuators. According to the application of SMA springs in different actuators, they are usually under tension and torsion loadings. The ability of SMAs in recovering inelastic strains is due to martensitic phase transformation between austenite and martensite phases. Stress or temperature induced martensite transformation induced of SMAs is a remarkable property which makes SMA springs more superior in comparison with traditional springs. The present paper deals with the simulation of SMA helical spring at room temperature. Three-dimensional phenomenological constitutive model is used to describe superelastic behavior of helical spring. This constitutive model is implemented as a user subroutine through ABAQUS STANDARD (UMAT), and the process of the implementation is presented. Numerical results show that the developed constitutive model provides an appropriate approach to captures the general behavior of SMA helical springs.
An experimental study has been performed on heat and mass transfer in a falling film absorber with a strong lithium bromide solution in small-sized household absorption chiller/heater. Components were concentrically arranged in a cylindrical form. from the center, low temperature generator, absorber and evaporator. This arrangement of helical-typed heat exchangers allows to make the machine much more compact than conventional one. Experimental measurements were conducted with a helical absorber and the obtained data were compared with data in the literatures. The comparison revealed that the helical absorber tube provides a similar performance to existing tube bundle absorber in heat and mass transfer. As a result, the heat and mass transfer characteristics of helical type absorber showed the possibility of the reduction in size and weight of small] capacity absorption chiller/heater.
The present study was conducted on the improvement of the heat transfer performance of double pipe heat exchangers with helical insert device. Double pipe heat exchangers with helical insert device were studied for improvement of the heat transfer performance of double pipe heat exchangers with helical insert device and plain double pipe heat exchangers were also studied to comparatively analyze heat transfer performance. Experimental results were derived on changes in the Reynold's numbers of the cooling water flowing in helical and plain double pipe heat exchangers and changes in the heat flux of the air. Thereafter, to verify the reliability of the experimental results, the theoretical total energy and the experimental total energy were comparatively analyzed and the following results were derived. The thermal energy of the calorie lost by the hot air and that of the calorie obtained by the cooling water were well balanced. The experiments of plain double pipe heat exchangers and double pipe heat exchangers with helical insert device were conducted under normal conditions and the theoretical overall heat transfer coefficient value and the experimental overall heat transfer coefficient value coincided well with each other. In both plain double pipe heat exchangers and double pipe heat exchangers with helical insert device, heat transfer rates increased as the cooling water flow velocity increased. Under the same experimental conditions, the heat transfer performance of double pipe heat exchangers with helical insert device was shown to be higher by approximately 1.5 times than that of plain double pipe heat exchangers.

This study introduces soil resistance multipliers at locations encompassed by the zone of influence of the helix plate to consider the added lateral resistance provided to the helical pile. The zone of influence of a helix plate is a function of its diameter and serves as a boundary condition for the modified soil resistance springs. The concept is based on implementing p-multipliers as a reduction factor for piles in group action. The application of modified p-y springs in the analysis of helical piles allows for better characterization and understanding of the lateral behavior of helical piles, which will help further the development of design methods. To execute the proposed method, a finite difference program, HPCap (Helical Pile Capacity), was developed by the authors using Matlab. The program computes the deflection, shear force, bending moment, and soil resistance of the helical pile and allows the user to freely input the value of the zone of influence and Ω (a coefficient that affects the value of the p-multiplier). Results from ten full-scale lateral load tests on helical piles embedded at depths of 3.0 m with varying shaft diameters, shaft thicknesses, and helix configurations were analyzed to determine the zone of influence and the magnitude of the p-multipliers. The analysis determined that the value of the p-multipliers is influenced by the ratio between the pile embedment length and the shaft diameter (Dp), the effective helix diameter (Dh-Dp), and the zone of influence. Furthermore, the zone of influence is recommended to be 1.75 times the helix diameter (Dh). Using the numerical analysis method presented in this study, the predicted deflections of the various helical pile cases showed good agreement with the observed field test results.
Gas-cooled space reactor, which adopts He-Xe gas mixture as working fluid, is a better choice for megawatt power generation. In this paper, thermal-hydraulic characteristics of He-Xe gas mixture in 2×2 rod bundle wrapped with helical wires is numerically investigated. The velocity, pressure and temperature distribution of the coolant are obtained and analyzed. The results show that the existence of helical wires forms the vortexes and changes the velocity and temperature distribution. Hot spots are found at the contact corners between helical wires and fuel rods. The highest temperature of the hot spots reach 1600K, while the mainstream temperature is less than 400K. The helical wire structure increases the friction pressure drop by 20%-50%. The effect extent varies with the pitch and the number of helical wires. The helical wire structure leads to the reduction of Nusselt number. Comparing thermal-hydraulic performance ratios (THPR) of different structures, the THPR values are all less than 1. It means that gas-cooled space reactor adopting helical wires could not strengthen the core heat removal performance. This work provides the thermal-hydraulic design basis for He-Xe gas cooled space nuclear reactor.
