  • In this paper, we address the numerical investigation on the effect of liquid compressibility onto the natural frequency of liquid-filled containers. Traditionally the liquid motion has been treated as an ideal fluid motion. However, from the numerical experiments for the axisymmetrical free-vibration of cylindrical liquid-storage tanks, we found that the relative difference in natural frequencies between ideal and compressible motions becomes remarkable, as the slenderness of tank or the relative liquid-fill height becomes larger. Therefore, in such cases of dynamic systems, the liquid compressibility becomes an important parameter, for the accurate vibration analysis. For the free-vibration analysis of compressible liquid-structure interaction we employed the coupled finite element formulation expressed in terms of the acoustic wave pressure and the structure deformation.

  • In this study, the performances of the SMRF building equipped with energy dissipating devices are studied. Three types of these structures with different heights are considered. The Added Damping and Stiffness (ADAS) devices are used as energy dissipating devices in these structures. The behavior of these structures with ADAS devices subjected to near source ground motions are investigated. Three SMRF buildings with five, ten and fifteen-story, with ADAS devices were chosen. The nonlinear time history analysis was used by applying the near source ground motions with PERFORM 3D.V4 and conclusions are drawn upon an energy criterion. The effect of PGA variation and height of the frames are also considered based on the energy criterion.

  • This paper dealt with an experiments on temperature vairation in the heat storage zone due to change of vertical location (height) of sink diffuser and flow extraction in small saltless solar pond ($0.5{\times}0.5{\times}1.0M$), and the honeycomb device for this experimental purpose consisted of one-tired, sealed, and air filled by honeycomb panels. As results of experiments, 1) The storage zone was formed under lower region below the honeycomb device. 2) The higher vertical location of sink diffuser was placed, the more mixing phenomenon increased in the pond at steady flow extraction. 3) The more flow extraction increased, the more mixing phenomenon decreased at constant heat exchanger and variable flow extraction.

  • This study presents parametric studies for design of tiling mechanism to be used in 180km/h tilting train. The titling mechanism is composed of 4 links, a tilting bolster and an electro-mechanical actuator. First we have determined the installation height of tilting actuator using 3D tilting bogie modeling. Secondary, we verified movements of the tiling center and train body CG along variation of upper and lower span length. From this study, we obtained the upper and lower span length to minimize the lateral and vertical motion of CG of train body. Finally, we evaluated the tilting actuator force and power required to tilt the train body to $\pm$8$^{\circ}$.

  • This study is to suggest a probabilistic design determining configurations of slider air bearings with the dimensional manufacturing tolerances of the ABS. The probabilistic design problem is formulated to minimize the variation in flying height from a target value while satisfying the desired probabilities keeping the pitch and roll angles within suitable range. The proposed approach first solves the deterministic optimization problem. Then, beginning with this solution, the RBDO is continued with the probabilistic constraints affected by the random variables with a fixed standard deviation in normal distribution. The RBDO results are directly compared with the values of the initial design and the results of the deterministic optimization, respectively. The reliability analyses are performed by the descriptive sampling (DS) to show the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed approach. It is demonstrated that the proposed RBDO approach can efficiently obtain an optimum solution satisfying all the desired probabilistic constraints.

  • In case of hollow cylinder extrusion using porthole die, the effects of extrusion parameters-temperature, the speed of extrusion, the shape of the die and mandrel-on metal flow in porthole die extrusion of aluminum have been investigated. However, there have been few studies about condenser tube extruded by porthole die. This study was designed to evaluate metal flow, welding pressure, extrusion load, tendency of mandrel deflection according to variation of chamber length. in porthole die. Estimation was carried out using finite element method. Porthole die is analyzed in as non-steady state. Analytical results provide useful information the optimal design of porthole die.

  • A plasticity theory applicable to powdered metal compaction is briefly summarized and its variational form for the finite element analysis is described. The compaction processes of axisymmetric solid cylinder are simulated. For the analysis of the friction effect of solid cylinder, the investigations were performed for different compact geometries. Highlights of the results for given geometries are reported in terms of transmitted pressure on the lower punch from the upper punch through the compact and maximum density variation within the compacts. General conclusions from these simulation results are : (1) the friction coefficient could be selected from the transmitted force data during the single acting compaction test with the simulated results ; and (2) density variatioins within the compacts are very much dependent of the compact geometry such as the height to diameter ratio and the frictional condition between compact and dies.

  • Gas metal arc welding(GMAW) is regarded as one of the best candidate for welding automation in industrial joining application. It is important to monitor the weld quality for the high performance weld automation. In GMAW, weld quality is closely related to arc stability especially. In this paper, arc light signal is measured and spectrum analyzed to the detect the variation of the weld quality. The FFT of the signal showed that the amplitude variance of FFT power spectrum was very large in poor weld process such as the decrease of weld bead width and height. The results show that it is possible to detect the weld defect position in weld process.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of three visual conditions (eyes opened, eyes closed, and wearing of a head mounted display [HMD]) on single-leg standing through kinematics and kinetic analysis. Method: Twelve college students (age: $24.5{\pm}2.6years$, height: $175.0{\pm}6.4cm$, weight: $69.2{\pm}5.1kg$) participated in this study. The study method adopted three-dimensional analysis with six cameras and ground reaction force measurement with one force plate. The analysis variables were coefficient of variation (CV) of the center of body mass, head movement, ground reaction force, and center of pressure, which were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance with repeated measures according to visual conditions. Results: In most cases, the results of this study showed that the CV was significantly higher in the order of HMD wearing, eyes closed, and eyes opened conditions. Conclusion: Our results indicated that body sway was the largest in the HMD wearing condition, and the risk of falling was high owing to the low stability.

  • With the variation of Ag concentration in bath, current density, additive and agitation for electroplating of Sn-Ag solder, the compositions and the morphologies of solder were studied. It was possible to control Ag content in Sn-Ag solder by varying Ag concentration in bath and current density The microstructure size of Sn-Ag solder decreased with increasing current density. Duty cycle of pulse electroplating and quantity of additive affected on Ag content of deposit and surface roughness. In this work eutectic Sn-Ag solder bumps with fine pitch of 30m and height of 15m was formed successfully. The Ag content of electrodeposited solder was confirmed by EDS and WDS analyses and the surface morphologies was analyzed by SEM and 3D surface analyzer.
