  • This study has been attempted to be helpful for the back rehabilization of Korean workers by analyzing the general, occupational, social aspects of low back pain and to identify possible risk factors for back pain in White and Blue collar workers. The primary data were collected from 380 workers in Seoul city by means of a Questionnaire with random which was distributed from March 10 to 31, 1990. For the test of statistical significance, chi-square analysis was used to compare the back pain characteristics between above two groups. The results were as follows : 1. The incidence of low back pain in all walkers studied was $79.7\%$. The incidence of Blue collar with low back pain $(87.2\%)$ was higher than that of White collars $(75.0\%)$. 2. With regard to the relationship of back pain to the occupational characteristics, statistically significant differences were observed between workers with and without back pain concerning the job factors on work-time, job satisfaction, mental stress, chair fittness, work posture, work rotation, weight lifting, monotonous repetitive movements, vibration, and heavy noise (p<0.05). 3. With regard to the relationship of back pain to the social characteristics, there were no differences with respect to having car, personality types, drinking habits, and leisure-time activities. However, significant differences were showed between no pain and pain groups for the using bed, sleeping posture, traffic time amount, walking health state, smoking habits, and physical exercise (p<0.05). 4. The comparative analysis of back pain related to work factors showed highly significant differences with respect to mental stress, chair fittness, work posture, trunk rotation, weight lifting, monotonous repetitive work in White collar group (p<0.01) ; and job satisfaction, mental stress, trunk rotation, weight lifting, monotonus repetitive work, exposure to vibration and heavy noise in Blue collar group(p<0.01). 5. The comparative analysis of social factors in two groups showed differences with respect to the using bed, sleeping posture, walking amount, health state, physical exercise, smoking habits in White cellar group (p<0.05) ; and walking amount, traffic time amount, health state, smoking habits, physical exercise in Blue cellar group (p<0.05). 6. In regard to the general aspects of back pain between two groups, there were differences concerning etiolgy of back pain, counselling partners, treatment types, and sick-leaves(p<0.05), except pain duration, and awareness of back pain.

  • A bus duct system for wind tower is introduced. A marine cable has been widely used in wind tower or various offshore structures. However, as the electric load capacity is increases, large number of cable lines must be used to cover the huge amount of electric capacities. Therefore, the installation of the cable lines becomes very difficult due to the heavy weight and volume of the cables. On the other hand, by using a single bus duct system line, the power capacity amount of 16 cables can be delivered with significantly compacted form. However, unlike flexible cables, the bus duct is relatively stiff which could generate the resonance phenomenon in the operating condition of the wind tower. In this study, the vibration characteristics of the bus duct are investigated and its long-term reliability during the life time of the wind tower is verified.

  • Seismic qualification of the main control board(MCB) for the nuclear power plant Ulchin 5 and 6 has been performed with the guideline of ASME Section III and IEEE 344 code. As the size and weight of the MCB are too large and heavy to excite using the excitation table, finite element analysis is used in order to investigate the dynamic behaviors and structural integrity of the MCB. As the fundamental frequencies of the equipment are found to be less than 33 Hz, which is the upper frequency limit for the dynamic analysis, response spectrum analysis using ANSYS is performed in order to combine the modal stresses within the frequency limit. In order to confirm the electrical stability of the major components of the MCB. modal analysis theory has been adopted to derive the required response spectra at the component locations. As the all combined stresses obtained from the above procedures are less than the allowable stresses and no mechanical or electrical failures are found from the seismic testing, the authors can confirm the safety of the nuclear equipment MCB under the given seismic loading conditions.

  • In this study floor impact noise and structure acceleration response of bare concrete slabs were predicted by using Finite Element Analysis(FEA). Prediction results were compared with experimental results to prove the accuracy of numerical model. Acoustic absorption were addressed by using panel impedance coefficients with frequency characteristics and structural modal damping of numerical model were applied by modal testing results and analysis of prediction and test results. By using frequency response function, the floor acceleration and acoustic pressure responses for various impact sources were calculated at the same time. In the FEA, the natural frequencies and the shapes of vibration and acoustic modes can be estimated through the eigen-value analysis, and it can be visually seen the vibration and sound pressure field and the contribution of major modes.

  • In apartment buildings, floor-impact sound has bean regarded as the major source which induces complaints from residents. It is mainly due to the use of light-weight structures. The vibration produced by impact on one part of an apartment building would travel as far as the other parts of structure with a little alleviation. As a result, the impact sound from upstairs has been regarded as a main source of noise causing discontentment among occupants. This study was carried out to measure the floor-impact sound levels and evaluate the insulation performance of floor-impact sound for nine apartment buildings. The floor-impact sound levels were measured for twenty-five On-dol floor structures and various factors which influence the floor-impact sound were analyzed.

  • Recently there has been a growing interest in the design and manufacturing of the muffler tube due to the strict environment regulations, A muffler is an important part used to reduce noise and to purify exhaust gas in cars and heavy equipment. The shape of the muffler tube and the number of the tube hole has been made variously according to the weight and function of the car. The perforating technique of the muffler tube has a great influence on the manufacturing cost. In this study, metal forming analysis has been carried out to investigate the perforating process for the muffler tube and predict an optimal forming conditions of the muffler tube, Also its simulation results by the finite element method were reflected to the die design and the manufacturing system for the muffler tube. The perforating process is performed in the longitudinal direction of the tube. According to the simulation results, when the shear angle of punch was similar to the tube curvature, the optimal shape was obtained. Also when the clearance of die was 0.2mm, the burr was minimized and optimal shear section was obtained.

  • PURPOSES : The permeable pavement type has been rapidly developed for solving problems regarding traffic noise in the area of housing complex and heavy rainwater drainage in order to account for the climate change. In this regards, the objective of this study is to figure out the characteristics of pavement types. METHODS : The laboratory test for deriving optimum asphalt content (OAC) was conducted using the mixtures of the permeable asphalt surface for the pavement surface from Marshall compaction method. Based on its results, the pavement construction at the test field was conducted. After that, the site performance tests for measuring the traffic noise, strength and permeability were carried out for the relative evaluation in 2 months after the traffic opening. The specific site tests are noble close proximity method (NCPX), Light falling deflectometer test (LFWD) and the compact permeability test. RESULTS : The ordered highest values of the traffic noise level can be found such as normal dense graded asphalt, drainage and porous structure types. In the results from LFWD, the strength values of the porous and drainage asphalt types had been lower, but the strength of normal asphalt structure had relatively stayed high. CONCLUSIONS :The porous structure has been shown to perform significantly better in permeability and noise reduction than others. In addition to this study, the evaluation of the properties and the determination of the optimum thickness for the subgrade course under the porous pavement will be conducted using ground investigation technique in the further research.
