  • Pt-V catalytic converter was installed on a heavy duty diesel engine and the characteristics of the emission reduction were tested using a engine dynamometer at various operating conditions. The emission reduction performance of Pt-V catalyst was also compared with that of a commercialized Pt catalyst currently being used in some of the heavy duty diesel engines in advanced countries. The effects of Pt-V and Pt catalysts on regulated and unregulated emissions were investigated using a 0.05 weight percent sulfur content fuel with an engine dynamometer Experiments for gaseous emissions (CO, HC and aldehyde) as well as particulate emissions (TPM, SOF and sulfate) have been conducted at several operating conditions such as T-7 mode, D-13 mode and S-13 mode before and after installing the Pt-V and Pt catalysts in the exhaust system. The emission reduction performance of Pt catalyst with respect to CO, HC, SOF, PAHs and aldehyde was found to be a little higher than that of Pt-V catalyst, but the Pt catalyst showed innate disadvantage of causing an increase of PM due to the sulfate formation via high SO2 conversion at high exhaust temperature, especially above 45$0^{\circ}C$.

  • To reduce the particulate matter and nitrogen oxides from diesel engine, many studies are proceeding and being accomplished practically. In this situation, LNG engine has important meaning as a clean fuel and alternative energy. In this reason, we try to understand the property of LNG fuel and predict the performance with using LNG engine simulation program and practical test. It could help to lead and apply practically LNG engine was studied in performance and other parameter related with engine performance and compared with current diesel engine. The simulation program was proved to be good in describing the experimental result. This means current heavy duty vehicle could be modified to LNG engine.

  • Recently, emission tests for heavy-duty vehicles have been conducted by heavy-duty engine dynamometer. But, it contains weaknesses that present inconveniences to install and uninstall engines and limitations to reflect on practical characteristics for vehicle driving. On the other hand, chassis dynamometer test is able to differentiate characteristics of real driving patterns due to the reason that vehicles can be examined by utilizing chassis dynamometer. This study aimed at comparing the characteristic of emitting regulatory substances of urban buses on Heavy-duty chassis dynamometer. The characteristic was analyzed based on vehicle speed by using both domestic and overseas developed heavy-duty vehicle test modes. As a result, this work attempted to investigate possibilities to take advantage of Heavy-duty vehicle test modes as a method to manage emissions from heavy-duty vehicles.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) with diesel particulate filter(DPF) on heavy duty diesel engine. The exhaust gas was recirculated to the intake manifold after the smoke was eliminated in the DPF, The major conclusions of this research are i)at each engine speed EGR ratio was able to 60% maximum ii) the amount of NOx emissions was decreased to 90% at high engine load and to more than 60% at low engine load and iii) the amout of NOx emissions was increased to five times according to the increase of engine load but the effect of EGR is more effective at high engine load.

  • Recently it is strongly required to develop the better fuel economy as well as basic power performance based on strict emission legislation. This paper focuses on studies of the engine cooling and ancillaries system among fuel economy factors in the developing stage. Firstly through the analysis of the current specifications, it is assessed whether each components may be designed properly, not overdesigned. Secondly, it is predicted how the fuel economy of each components can be improved. Finally the results are confirmed by vehicle field test equppted with the updatedcomponents. This study found good agreementbetween the prediction and the field test on the vehicle fuel economy improvements of the heavy duty engine vehicle with updated components such as engine cooling and ancilliaries.

  • Air cleaners in all of the automotive engines have been used for decades. In the early 1920's the oil bath type was the popular shape of air cleaners. The air cleaners of the oil wetted bath type were introduced in 1940's. The shape of the dry pleated paper type media was introduced in the 1950's. This trend still continues with new and innovative media being introduced. Engine air cleaners should have effectively removed and reduced harmful contaminants being ingested into engines. This studies show that both, the ingested contaminant size and concentration need to be controlled. This paper com pare and analyze the characteristics over the economics, engine performances and reduction of noises of power-plus air filters with wet paper which were sticked to heavy duty diesel engine.

  • Finite element analysis was performed to analyze structural safety of a new heavy-duty direct injection diesel engine. A half section of the in-line 6-cylinder engine was selected as a computational domain. A mapping method was used to project heat transfer coefficients from CFD results of engine coolant flow onto the FE model. The accurate setting of thermal boundary condition on the FE model was expected to result in improved prediction of temperature, cylinder bore distortion, and stresses. Characteristics of high cycle fatigue were investigated by assuming the engine was operated under the following five loading conditions repeatedly; assembly force, assembly force with thermal loading, alternating maximum gas pressure loading at each cylinder combined with assembly force and thermal loading. Distribution of fatigue safety factor was calculated by using it Haigh diagram in which the maximum and the minimum stresses were selected from the five loading cases.

  • Automatic transmission for heavy duty vehicles is a part of the power pack which includes steering and braking systems. This transmission in different from the one for passenger car. Therefore, in order to understand the trend of the important design parameters, maneuverability, acceleration performance and maximum speed, we need to analyze the total performance characteristics of the power transmission systems. In this study, modeling of the automatic transmission in heavy duty vehicle is carried out and the performance analysis method is presented. Results can be used for performance estimation data in the analysis for several combination method which determines the optimal parameters on the basis of penalty functions and weightings. And the estimation method of the important performance parameters such as engine inertia or power loss of engine by experiments is presented.

  • Diesel engines which emit a lot of PM and NOx have been known as a main air polluter. Especially, diesel particulate matters (OPM) including black smoke are hazardous air pollutants to human health and environment. The nations retaining advanced engine technologies have reinforced emission regulations. To meet these regulations diesel engine manufacturers have developed low-emission diesel engines, aftertreatment equipments, alternative fuel technologies and so on. In this study, particle number concentrations characteristics according to particle size and engine driving conditions were analyzed when these low-emission technologies were applied. There was a tendency of increasing particle number concentrations from heavy-duty diesel engines with increasing engine rpm and load rate. In the cases of COPF (Catalytic Diesel Particulate Filter), CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine and ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) more than 99% of particle number concentration were removed.
