The components in ultra super critical (USC) steam turbine, which is under development for high efficient power generation, are encountering harsher solid particle erosion by iron oxide scales than ones in the existing steam turbines. Therefore, the currently used boride coating will not be able to hold effective protection from particle erosion in USC system and should be replaced by new particle erosion resistant coatings. One of the best protective coatings developed for USC steam turbine parts was found to be vanadium-boride (V-boride) coating which has a hardness of about 3000 HV, much higher than that of boride, 1600~2000 HV. In order to evaluate particle erosion resistance of the various coatings such as V-boride, boride and Cr-carbide coatings at high temperature, particle erosion test equipments were designed and manufactured. In addition, erosion particle velocity was simulated using FLUENT software based on semi-implicity method for pressure linked equations revised (SIMPLER). Based on experimental results of this work, the vanadium-boride coating was found to be superior to others and to be a candidate coating to replace the boride coating.
In this study, we investigated physical and chemical properties such as grain size, heavy metal pollution, magnetic properties, and their environmental impacts of road dusts (RD) collected from 14 sampling points in Daebul industrial Complex. Heavy metal concentrations in RD were in the order of Fe>Zn>Cu>Pb>Cr>Ni>As>Cd>Hg, and this pollution pattern was related to major industries and traffic activities in this area. The results of the correlation analysis between heavy metal elements and particle size in RD showed that Fe and all of analyzed heavy metals had a significant correlation with each other and metal concentrations had a significantly negative correlation (p<0.05). However, due to the input of large metal particles some heavy metal concentrations in the particle fraction of >1000 ㎛ were highest. Pollution load per unit area of this fraction was the highest among the grain size fractions. Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb levels in RD decreased and the levels of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb were reduced to 85 (As) -22 (Ni)% of the whole after removal of MFs fraction from RD. The mean heavy metal levels in the study area did not exceed the soil contamination guide value of Korea, indicating that heavy metal levels in RD were not a concern. However, at some sampling points, Zn concentrations were exceeded the soil contamination guide value for the 3rd areas of Korea and this result indicated that further studies of the impact of RD on the surrounding environment through re-suspension or non-point pollution, and of effective management methods are required.

Gas-insulated transmission lines (GITL) are valued as technological solutions in hydro-power stations due to their enormous power handling capabilities. The performance of GITL is a function of the size of metallic particles inside the gas-insulated chamber. Electrostatic field (E-field) enhancement is a common phenomenon in gas-insulated lines due to these metallic particles. In this study, the E-field enhancement factor is calculated by considering metallic particles at various locations in the gas-insulated line/bus section, such as high-tension (HT) conductor, high-voltage shields, support insulator, and inner surface of grounded enclosure. For this purpose, a two-dimensional model based on finite element (FE) method is developed. The length of the metallic particle is in the range of 1 to 10 mm while the diameter is between 1 to 3 mm. E-field enhancement is also computed for various particle configurations of the gas-insulated system, with focus on dielectric coating made of epoxy on HT conductor and inner surface of grounded enclosure.
Natural gas has been considered one of the most promising alternative fuels for transportation because of its abundance as well as its ability to reduce regulated pollutants. We measured emission characteristics of nanoparticles from lean burn H/D(Heavy-Duty) CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine equipped with oxidation catalysts. The experiments were carried out to measure the emission and engine performance according to the ESC test cycle. The CO and THC conversion efficiencies on the best catalyst in the ESC test cycle achieved about 91 % and 83 %, respectively. From the measurement by the SMPS, the number of nanoparticles emitted from H/D CNG engine is reduced by about 99 % which is more than that of 2.5 L diesel engine. The particle number concentrations of H/D CNG engine were almost nanoparticles. Nanoparticles smaller than 30 nm emitted from the H/D CNG engine and diesel engine equipped with a CDPF(Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filter) were quite similar. However, the particles bigger than 30nm from the CNG engine were smaller than the particles from diesel engine equipped with a CDPF. The higher the CNG engine load, the lower the particle number from engine-out, but it increased slightly at full load.

Conventional coagulation-gravity settling processes in heavy metal removal have a problem in coagulant cost and instability of the settling efficiency. The authors investigated the effects of pH and slow mixing conditions on heavy metal hydroxide precipitation and the particle size distribution of the precipitate for a precipitation-membrane separation process. The optimum pH values for the hydroxide precipitation ranged from 9 to 10. The addition of $FeCl_3$ did not enhance the heavy metal removal. 20 min of slow mixing at 70 rpm showed the maximum heavy metal removal to meet the water quality criteria for effluent discharge. More than 99.9% of the heavy metal precipitate particles were bigger than $2{\mu}m$.
When rivers and lakes are contaminated with numerous contaminants, usually the contaminants are finally deposited on the sediments of the waterbody. Many clean up technologies have been developed for the contaminated sediments. Among several technologies dredging is one of the best methods because dredging removes all the contaminated sediments from the water and the contaminated sediments can be completely treated with physical and chemical methods. However the most worried phenomenon is suspension of fine particles during the dredging process. The suspended particle can release contaminants into water and resulted in spread of the contaminants and the increase of risk due to the resuspension of the precipitated contaminants such as heavy metals and toxic organic compounds. Therefore the success of the dredging process depends on the prevention of resuspension of fine particles. Advanced dredging processes employ pumping the sediment with water onto a ship and release the turbid water pumped with sediment into waterbody after collection of sediment solids. Before release of the turbid water into lake or river, just a few minutes allowed to precipitate the suspended particle due to the limited area on a dredging ship. However the fine particle cannot be removed by the gravitational settling over a few minutes. Environmental technology such as coagulation and precipitation could be applied for the settling of fine particles. However, the process needs coagulants and big settling tanks. For the quick settling of the fine particles suspended during dredging process magnetic separation has been tested in current study. Magnetic force increased the settling velocity and the increased settling process can reduce the volume of settling tank usually located in a ship for dredging. The magnetic assisted settling also decreased the heavy metal release through the turbid water by precipitating highly contaminated particles with magnetic force.
Dry sieving, wet sieving and photoscattering analyzer were tested as particle size analyzing methods for sediments from rivers and lakes of Han river, Nakdong river, Youngsan river, and Kumgang river area. Dry sieving showed a big error due to coagulating effect over drying process and this phenomena was severe for lake sediment. Wet sieving and PSA showed an accurate results though wet sieving needs more labor and complicate processes. Freeze-dry or freeze-dry after oxidation of organics with hydrogen peroxide showed improved results but gave lower portion of fine particles in comparing with wet sieving. Heavy metal contents and extractable metal contents were investigated for the sediments and high heavy metal content and extractable amount were obtained from fine particles as expected. Using of proper particle size analyzing method is important and the sediment management should be focused on the fine particles.
We have developed a simple model for describing the non-spherical particle growth phenomena using modified 1-dimensional sectional method. In this model, we solve simultaneously particle volume and surface area conservation sectional equations which consider particles' irregularities. From the correlation between two conserved properties of sections, we can predict the evolution of the aggregates' morphology. We compared this model with a simple monodisperse-assumed model and more rigorous two dimensional sectional model. For the comparison, we simulated silica and titania particle formation and growth in a constant temperature reactor environment. This new model shows a good agreement with the detailed two dimensional sectional model in total number concentration, primary particle size. The present model can also successfully predict particle size distribution and morphology without costing very heavy computation load and memory needed for the analysis of two dimensional aerosol dynamics.
Measurement of dried deposition for air pollutant was investigated in Gwang-ju Health college area for a year. The average value of air pollutants was investigated three times a month. Measured heavy metals and concentration of mass are not corelated. Heavy metals were thrown up air as state of large particles and they were moved by wind. Deposition of heavy metals and deposition velocities were high in the order of Fe > n > Cu > Pb > Cr and Pb > Fe > Cr > Zn > Cu, respectively. The pattems of deposition velocity of heavy metals for a year were much the same as each other except that Pb is faster than others.
