  • While environmental pollution being developed, there have been some cases that residents on certain parts of Seoul area have cultivated vegetables in a small scale, and consumed the produce of theirs thinking them not polluted. Therefore the need for study about whether those vegetables and soil were polluted was growing. In this study, Seoul area (Tobong-dong, Chang-dong, Wolgyedong, P'il-dong, Oksu-dong, and Karibong-dong) and Kyanggi area (Changhang, P'och'an, Kap'yang, Yangp'y~ng) where pollution was thought to be less severe than that of the former were selected for the sampling area. Cabbage, pumpkin and young pumpkin were sampled and dried to be analyzed the contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and moisture content was also analyzed. And at the same time 0.1 N-HCl soluble heavy metal content of soil was measured, and the results obtained were descrived as follows. Heavy metal contents of soil in Seoul and Kyonggi were Cd 0.184 ppm, 0.118 ppm, Cr 2.355 ppm, 0.441 ppm, Cu 29.16 ppm, 3.331 ppm, Ni 1.650 ppm, 0.829 ppm, Pb 26.77 ppm, 4.696 ppm, Zn 57.47 ppm, 14.94 ppm respectively. Heavy metal contents of cabbage in Seoul and Kyonggi were Cd 0.407 ppm, 0.241 ppm, Cr 0.388 ppm, 0.402 ppm, Cu 6.853 ppm, 4.486 ppm, Ni 1.479 ppm, 0.878 ppm, Pb 0.812 ppm, 0.258ppm, Zn 112.2 ppm, 54.86ppm respectively. Heavy metal contents of pumpkin in Seoul and Ky6nggi were Cd 0.011 ppm, 0.011 ppm, Cr 0,262 ppm, 0.197 ppm, Cu 3.302 ppm, 2.539 ppm, Ni 0.717 ppm, 0.369 ppm, Pb 0.257 ppm, 0.083 ppm, Zn 28.75 ppm, 14.01 ppm respectively. Correlation between heavy metal contents of soil and those of vegetables was represented high as a whole. In all heavy metals cabbage had higher values of concentrations than those of pumpkin (p<0.001). Concentrations of young pumpkin were higher than those of big pumpkin. It was probably due to the fact that young pumpkin containing not only inner part of pumpkin but also seeds was used as a sample. When classified by region, relatively high concentrations were observed in the samples of Karibong-dong, and in the sample of Jungtang riverside Cd was higher, and in the sample of Namsan Pb was higher than any other district.

  • Heavy metal ingredients of eyeliner product could cause side effect ranging from simple irritation, keratitis, corneal epithelium inflammation, eyelid dermatitis and dry eye symptoms have been reported. This study was conducted in order to prepare fundamental data for acceptable quality level heavy metal ingredients in the domestic and foreign cosmetic brand eyeliner products and to assess theirs the heavy metal concentrations. We measured the concentration of 5 heavy metals in 10 eyeliner products using ICP/MS-LC. According to the results, the average metal concentrations were as follows.; In case of domestic eyeliner products, 289.4 ppm for aluminium(Al), 304 ppm for manganese(Mn), 44 ppm for nickel(Ni), 0.58 ppm for arsenic(As) and 0.35 ppm for lead(Pb). In case of Foreign eyeliner products, 11337.8 ppm for aluminium(Al), 1678.8 ppm for manganese(Mn), 74.2 ppm for nickel(Ni), 1 ppm for arsenic(As) and 0.8 ppm for lead(Pb). Foreign products contained higher amounts of the two elements(Pb, As) compared to domestic ones. Also, greater concentrations of arsenic(As) were detected from waterproof products than non-waterproof ones. In conclusion, for safety reasons we suggested the amounts of heavy metals from the domestic and foreign eyeliner products. This finding will be helpful to provide the fundamental data which is standard of toxicological heavy metals acceptable on eyeliner products.

  • To measure the contents of several heavy metal elements (Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb) in Korean seaweeds which are closely related to food resources, various seaweed samples were collected from thirteen to seventeen seaweed-producing districts. The results obtained from the experiment are summarized as follows: 1. The content of heavy metal elements in seaweeds of individual sample ranged from 0.0005 to 25.0373 ppm. Their mean levels were as follows: laver, 0.0024∼3.9297 ppm; sea lettuce, 0.0011∼25.0373 ppm; sea mustard, 0.0005∼23.5071 ppm; sea tangle, 0.0006∼4.8550 ppm. The mean levels of Cd and Pb were specially low in the samples collected from the area II in Kangwon and area Ⅸ in Kyungbook. 2. The mean levels of heavy metal elements of collected samples ranged from 0.0117 to 4.4944 ppm. Laver showed the lowest level of Hg and sea lettuce showed the highest level of Mn. Their mean levels of elements were as follows: laver, 0.0117∼2.3339 ppm; sea lettuce,0.0232∼4.4944 ppm; sea mustard, 0.0129∼1.5139 ppm and sea tangle, 0.0182∼1.7410 ppm. 3. The mean levels of heavy metal elements from several locations ranged from 0.0085 ppm to 8.4148 ppm. The mean levels of heavy metal elements in sea mustard from area V of Kyungbook were the lowest, but the mean levels of heavy metal elements in sea lettuce from area Ⅷ of Kyungnam were the highest. The mean level of heavy metal elements were as follows: laver, 0.3613∼1.1124 ppm; sea lettuce, 0.1415∼8.4148 ppm; sea mustard, 0.0729-3.1182 ppm; sea tangle, 0.0085∼0.7587 ppm. 4. Generally the heavy metal elements were detected in the seaweed samples from all locations. The mean levels of heavy metal elements varied with locations and kinds of samples. The levels of heavy metals of the samples taken from all locations from the East Sea, the South Sea, and the West Sea areas showed 99% safety range.

  • Although the Dongjin Au-Ag-Cu mine had been abandoned since about forty years ago, the results of this study on the dispersion patterns and contamination level of heavy metals in the hydrologic system flowing via the waste rump show that the environmental impacts from the mine wastes are still significant. The stream water in the vicinity of the waste rump is severely acidified (pH 3.8 to 4.4) and highly enriched in various dissolved heavy metals. The heavy metal contents of the stream water and stream sediments are systematically attenuated with increasing distance from the mine area. However, it is worth to note that continuous attenuation of heavy metal contents in both media were reenriched in downstream area more than 800 m apart from the mine because it can be acted as a secondary source of heavy metal pollution. The heavy metals, especially Cd, Cu and Zn of polluted downstream sediments mainly occur in Fe-Mn oxides and organic materials, which indicates that these elements are the main pollutants from the waste rump of the Dongjin mine. The heavy metal contents of crops, such as sesame, perilla, red Pepper and brown rice, collected from the polluted farm land in the downstream area are lower than those of land plants from stream sides, but significantly higher in Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn than those from the unpolluted farm land. Especially, almost all of the crops in polluted farm land have been severly contaminated by Cd (>0.4 ppm). On the other hand, the heavy metal contents of the crops collected from refreshed farm land by means of a soil addition method shows significantly lowered level comparing with those of polluted area, which indicates that a soil addition method was effective for the refreshment of polluted farm land by toxic metallic pollutants. Wormwoods from this area showed very high contents in a11 the heavy metals even in unpolluted area (Cd > 1 ppm, Cr > 1 ppm, Cu > 11 ppm, Pb> 4 ppm, Zn > 55 ppm), indicating that a special caution must be payed when one takes ingest them.

  • This study is conducted to evaluate the leaching of contaminants from mine tailing by natural water and finally to estimate the leaching and transportation of heavy metal contaminants by rainfall. In order to identify contaminated heavy metal of soil, 17 soil, 2 tailing and 2 waste dump and 2 control samples were taken at mine area and analyzed total metal contents. The leaching experiments were conducted using distilled water. Cu, Pb, Zn was extracted from the reddish mine tailing in a short period time, especially the extraction rate of Cu (45.0%) was highest. The contaminants were leached from the yellowish mine tailing within an hour and the leaching rate of Cd (42.0%) and Zn (17.2%) were relatively high. The reddish soil from the waste dump showed leaching of Cu (5.1%), Pb (4.0%) and Zn (3.3%), however the leaching rate was low except Mi (14.2%). From the yellowish soil sampled from the dumping site, the leaching of Cu (8.2%) and Ni (9.7%) was high while the leaching of Zn (0.2%) were relatively low.
