Transition Characteristics and Risk Assessment of Heavy Metal(loid)s in Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Grown at the Major Producing Districts in Korea

  • BACKGROUND: The concern over heavy metal(loid)s in arable land and agricultural products increases for public health in recent years. This study aims to identify transition characteristics of heavy metal(loid)s and to assess dietary risk in barley grown at the major producing districts in Korea. METHODS AND RESULTS: The soil and barley samples were collected from 38 locations around the major producing districts at Jeollabuk-do in Korea for the propose of examining the concentrations of heavy metal(loid)s. The 34 barley samples were separately purchased on the market for the same survey. The average concentration and range of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in barley grown at the major producing districts in Korea were 0.037 (0.016-0.094), 0.028 (0.004-0.083) and 0.137 (0.107-0.212) mg kg-1, respectively. Currently, the maximum allowable level for barley Pb is set at 0.2 mg kg-1 in Korea, and the monitoring results suggested that some samples exceeded the maximum allowable level and required appropriate farming management. Bio-concentration factor values by heavy metal(loid)s in barley were high at Cd, copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), similar to other crops, while As and Pb were low, indicating low transferability. CONCLUSION: Human exposure to As, Cd and Pb through dietary intake of barley might not cause adverse health effects due to relatively low concentrations, although the Pb in some barley was detected higher than the maximum allowable level. Further study on uptake and accumulation mechanism of Pb by barley might be required to assess the human health risk associated with soil contamination.

  • 본 연구에서는 세가지 중금속 (Cd(II), Cu(II), Zn(II))에 대하여 활성슬러지 미생물 folc의 중금속 흡착 및 축적 작용에 의한 중금속 제거과정을 실험을 통해 연구하였다. 회분식 실험을 통해 pH, 중금속 농도, MLSS 농도 및 온도에 따른 반응시간별 중금속 제거율과 축적량을 측정하였다. 활성슬러지 공정에 의한 중금속제거는 흡착 및 축적에 의해 중금속이 슬러지에 고농도로 농축되어 일어났다. 회분식 실험결과 중금속의 흡착평형은 단시간내에 일어났으며, 미생물 floc과 중금속이온과의 결합세기는 Cu(II)>Zn(II)>Cd(II)의 순으로 나타났다.

Primary study on metal amounts in Lophius piscatorius Linnaeus, 1758 obtained from fish markets in Sinop, Turkey

  • The levels of five heavy metals (mercury, cadmium, lead, copper and zinc) were analyzed in edible tissues of Lophius piscatorius Linnaeus, 1758 marketed in Sinop coasts of the Black Sea by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. With the present study, heavy metal values of this fish in the Black Sea were examined for the first time. The mean concentrations in mg kg-1 wet wt. of Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn were 0.022, 0.009, 0.035, 6.3 and 16 mg kg-1 wet wt., respectively. The results of the present study indicate that the consumption of muscle from anglerfish can be considered safe in terms of permissible legal limits. It is clear that, Zn showed the high accumulation in muscle tissue followed by Cu, while non-essential metals Hg, Cd and Pb showed the low accumulation. This could be explained by the fact that Zn and Cu are essential elements in the bodies of living organisms and has an important role in different physiological processes. In the present study, heavy metal levels in angler fish were low. Likewise, the calculated HI values were lower than one. In conclusion, the results of the present study indicate that the consumption of muscle from anglerfish can be considered safe in terms of permissible legal limits and hazard index values.

마산시 도로 주변 은행나무와 양버즘나무의 잎과 수피 및 토양의 중금속 함량 (Contents of Heavy Metals in Leaf and Bark of Ginkgy biloba snd Platatus occidentalis and Soil of Roadside in Masan City)

  • To determine the accumulation and distribution of heavy metals in plants and soils of roadsides, the leaf and bark of Ginkgo biloba and Platanus occidentalis, and the soil were sample from Masan-city roadside and Chinhae forest land in July and November, 1994. The content of heavy metals from all the samples in Masan-city area was much higher than that in Chinhae forest land. The amount of heavy metals in soil was higher than those in plant parts of boty trees. The total amount of heavy metals of the bark was higher than the leaf of G. biloba plants. But that of the bark was less than the leaf of P. occidentalis. Heavy metal content in plants (leaf, bark) varied among elements and collections. The concentrations of heavey metals in both trees were in the order of Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. The concentrations of the four heavy metals in leaf and Zn in soil in G. Biloba were seasonally changed. Whereas those in P. occidentalis were not significantly changed. And there was a high correlation between the concentrations of Pb and Cu in both trees.

서울시 우수관에서 채취한 도로변 퇴적물의 중금속오염의 공간적 변화 (Spatial variability of heavy metal contamination of urban roadside sediments collected from gully pots in Seoul City)

  • In order 새 investigate the spatial and seasonal variations of heavy metal pollution in heavily industrialized urban area, urban roadside sediments were collected for five years from gully pots in Seoul City. A series of studies have been carried out concerning the physicochemical characteristics of the sediments in order to evaluate the contamination of heavy metals such as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. Roadside sediments and uncontaminated stream sediments were analyzed for total metal concentrations using acid extraction. The roadside sediments are characterized by very high concentrations of Zn (2,665.0$\pm$1,815.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g), Cu (445.6$\pm$708.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g), Pb (214.3$\pm$147.9 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g) and Cr (182.1$\pm$268.8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g), indicating an artificial accumulation of these metals to the sediment chemistry. Comparing with average contents of uncontaminated stream sediments, roadside sediments were shown zinc 14 times (up to 64.4), copper 9 times (up to 181.7), lead 6 times (up to 63.7), cobalt 6 times (up to 168.7), nickel 4 times (up to 98.4), cadmium 2 times (up to 12.8) and chrome 2 times (up to 40.2) high content. The relative degree of heavy metal pollution for roadside sediments collected from each district in Seoul City is evaluated using the “geoaccumulation index”. As a result, heavy-metal contamination is highest centering the oldest residential district and industry area, and contamination level decreases as go to outer block of the city. The factor analysis results indicate that the levels of Cu, Ni, Fe and Cr are strongly related to numbers of factories, whereas the concentrations of Cr, Zn and Cd dependant on pollution index, indicating artificial contamination due to site-specific traffic density.

광산 인근 밭토양에서 중금속 안정화제 처리 및 복토층 처리에 의한 토양 중 중금속 식물유효도 변화 및 고추의 중금속 흡수 (Changes in Heavy Metal Phytoavailability by Application of Immobilizing Agents and Soil Cover in the Upland Soil Nearby Abandoned Mining Area and Subsequent Metal Uptake by Red Pepper)

  • At the current situation of continuous utilization of heavy metal contaminated upland for agricultural purpose in Korea, minimizing transport of heavy metals from soil to crops is important for securing safety of human health. The present study (in field scale) examined the efficiency of several soil amendments (dolomite, steel slag, lime, zeolite, and compost) on reduction of phytoavailable heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in soil through comparison with no amendment treatment and clean soil cover treatment. For determination of the phytoavailability, 1 M $NH_4NO_3$ extraction and red pepper cultivation were introduced. Among the amendments, in general, dolomite and steel slag were the most effective in reduction of metal (Cd, Pb, and Zn) phytoavailability resulting in less accumulation of these metals in shoot and fruit of red pepper. However, dolomite and steel slag treatment was not as effective as clean soil cover treatment which showed the least metal accumulation in red pepper fruit. Nevertheless, with taking into account the cost, treatment of dolomite or steel slag can be competitive method because the current study showed that dolomite or steel slag treatment reduced accumulated heavy metal concentration effectively in both shoot and fruit of red pepper compared to those from control soil and the concentration in fruit was within the standard value (<0.2 mg $kg^{-1}$ for both Cd and Pb).

  • Neurospora crassa 를 카드뮴, 철, 망간, 난 등이 각각 첨가된 배지에서 배양할 경우 각 중금속들이 균사에 저장되는 것을 관찰하였다. 각 중금속들은 단백질에 결합되더 각기 다른 세포네 소기관에 축적되었고, 중금속이 첩가된 배지에서 생장한 균사는 서로 매우 상이한 단백질 분포 양상을 보여 주었다. 가드뮴을 제외한 중금속들은 예상과는 달리 N. crassa 의 성장을 억제하지 않았으며, 납의 경우는 우히려 성장을 촉진하였다. 카드뮴이 첨가된 배지에서 condiospore 는 정상적인 길이 성장을 하지 못하고 둥근 형태로 생장하였으며, 길이 생장을 하던 균사는 두께가 두꺼워짐이 관찰되었다.

  • 동합금이 사육 생물에게 미치는 생리적 영향을 조사하기 위해 화학적 조성이 다른 5종류의 금속판을 넣은 수조에서 사육한 북방전복을 대상으로 성패와 치패의 생존율, 호흡 및 배설률 그리고 기관별 중금속 축적률을 조사하였다. 생존율은 치패와 성패가 각각 27-60%와 63-83%로 성패가 더 높게 나타났다. 합금 조성에 따른 생존율의 뚜렷한 차이는 나타나지 않으나 중금속 축적률 그리고 영양적인 스트레스 등을 고려하면 동합금망은 전복 양성을 위한 가두리로서는 적합하지 못할 것으로 사료된다.

  • 카드뮴에 오염될 가능성이 있는 아연 광산지역의 오니로부터 중금속내성균을 분리한 고도카드뮴내성 효모인 B-7 배양조건 및 균체내 카드뮴의 축적에 대하여 검토했다. 효모 B-7은 3,000 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$의 카드뮴 합유배지에서 생육이 가능하며 다른 연구자들의 카드뮴내성균보다 내성이 가장 큰 고도카드뮴내성균이었다. 이 효모는 22~22$^{\circ}C$및 pH 5.0~8.0의 조건에서 생육이 양호하였다. 카드뮴은 균체내 축적은 생육최적 pH인 6.0에서 가장 양호했으나, 그 이외의 pH에서는 급격히 저해되였으며 소포제 Silicon KM-70에 의하여 46.5%의 카드뮴 축적을 촉진시켰다. 카드뮴의 균체내 축적은 정지기 후반에 일어나며 0.2% Silicon과 50 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$의 카드뮴을 함유하는 배지에서 28$^{\circ}C$, 48시간 진탕 배양한 바 건조균체 당(g) 34.17mg의 카드뮴을 축적시켰다. 축적 카드뮴의 73%가 세포질 중에 축적되었으며 나머지 27%의 카드뮴은 세포벽 및 핵과 같은 4,000$\times$g에서 침전되는 성분에 축적되었다.

중금속 오염에 대한 Phytoremediation 용 야생식물 연구 (Study on the Potential of Phytoremediation using Wild Plants for Heavy Metal Pollution)

  • 중금속 오염에 대한 식물복원법(phytoremediation)에 적합한 식물종의 탐색과 확립에 필요한 기초자료를 얻기 위하여 본 연구를 수행하였다. 공시 식물은 단풍잎돼지풀, 갓, 소리쟁이, 어저귀와 같은 야생식물을 이용하였다. 이들 종에 중금속으로 카드뮴과 구리를 처리하여 유묘의 출현과 유묘시기의 생육의 변화 및 양액재배를 통해 중금속이 이들 종에 미치는 영향과 축적되는 정도를 알아보았다. 공시종을 모래에 파종 후 중금속을 토양내 위험 수준으로 처리하고 pH를 6.5, 5.5, 4.5 조절하였을 때 pH가 낮아질수록 출현율 및 유묘의 생육은 저하되었으며 카드뮴에 비해 구리의 피해가 좀더 심하였다. 공시종 중 phy-toremediation에 가장 적합한 종은 단풍잎돼지풀이었으며 이종은 중금속에 의한 유묘의 출현과 초기 생육의 영향이 다른 종에 비해 적었으며, 양액 재배에 있어서도 $20{\mu}mol/L$Cd와 $80{\mu}mol/L$ Cu정도의 농도 처리에 의한 피해 정도가 미약하였다. 미국돼지풀은 중금속 축적량이 유묘의 카드뮴 311mg/kg, 구리 369mg/kg 정도가 축적되어 양호한 결과를 나타냈다.
