  • When thermal diffusivity is measured by laser flash method, the thermal diffusivity call be calculated front the assumption of the uniformly heated whole surface of the specimen. It has been known that the approximate 5% error is made by the non-uniform energy distribution on the specimen surface of laser pulse heat source. In this study, to obtain the highly-uniformed laser beam, which has both the low non-uniform heating error from non-uniform laser beam and the energy loss, research was carried out on no transmitting loss by optical fiber and high repetitions. In addition, heating error and thermal diffusivity were measured as the measuring positions were varied and compared with the results using the uniform and the non-uniform laser beams. In addition, dole to using the uniformalized laser beam, the whole surface of the specimen was heated uniformly and as a result, it was the thought that this was very effective to reduce the variations of the errors of the thermal diffusivity as the measuring positions were varied. It can be obtained that when the thermal diffusivity of POCO-AXM-5Q1 of SRM in NBS was measured with both the uniform and the non-uniform laser beams, the dispersion error of the former was from 2 to 2.5%, which was more improved than that of the latter.

  • We report observation of laser desorption/ionization (LDI) of peptides from flat surfaces of tungsten silicide ($WSi_2$). In contrast to MALDI (matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization) and SALDI (surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization) mass spectrometry, this study did not utilize any matrices and surface nanostructures. In this work, LDI on $WSi_2$ surfaces is demonstrated to cover a mass range up to 1,600 Da (somatostatin; monoisotopic mass = 1637.9 Da). In addition, it exhibited a high sensitivity, which could detect peptides, which could detect peptides of low femtomole levels (20 fmol for angiotensin II). The observed LDI process was discussed to be largely thermal, more specifically, due to laser-induced surface heating that is most likely promoted by the low thermal diffusivity (${\kappa}$) of $WSi_2$ substrate.

  • Laser cutting of thick diamond films is studied using a low-power(10 W) copper vapor laser. Due to the existence of the saturation depth in laser cutting, thick diamond films are not easily cut by low-power lasers. In this study, we have adopted a low thermalconductivity underlayer of alumina and a heating stage (up to 500$^{\circ}C$ in air) to prevent the laser energy from consuming-out and, in turn, enhance the cutting efficiency. Aspect ratio increases twice fromm 3.5 to 7 when the alumina underlayer used. Adopting a heating stage also increases aspect ratio and more than 10 is obtained at higher temperatures than 400$^{\circ}C$. These results show that thick diamond films can be cut, with low-power lasers, simply by modifying the thermal property of underlayer.

  • The properties of plasmas produced by high power glass laser were investigated with various methods of diagnostics. Electron temperature was estimated by measurement of soft X-ray, and ion temperature was estimated by measurement of the time-of-flight of ion. The measurement of incident and reflected laser light, and Schlieren and shadowgragh methods were also used. No influence of laser pulse duration on the temperature was observed in the case of durations 2, 4 and 10 nsecs. The effective heating of plasma occurred in about 2 nsec of beginning of incident laser pulse. The experimental results for fast rising laser pulse were discussed and the influence of resetime of laser pulse on the heating of plasma was described. Neutrons produced by irradiating laser beam to solid deuterium target were detected.

  • The effects of laser heating on soot formation and oxidation of propylene diffusion flames have been studied experimentally under nearly sooting conditions. The non-sooting flame can be converted to a sooting flame when the laser light heats up a flame at 7 mm height, while a sooting flame can be changed to a non-sooting flame when a flame is heated with laser light at flame height of 13 mm. The selective heating at the soot formation and/or oxidation region determines the sooting behavior of a diffusion flame. The increased soot/flame temperatures are most likely to be responsible for both the decreased and increased soot formation/oxidation.

  • The bubble dynamics induced by direct laser heating is experimentally analyzed as a first step to assess the technical feasibility of laser-based ink-jet technology. To understand the interaction between laser light and ink, the absorption spectrum is measured for various ink colors and concentrations. The hydrodynamics of laser-generated bubbles is examined by the laser-flash photography. When an Ar ion laser pulse (wavelength 488 nm) with an output power up to 600 mW is incident on the ink solution through a transparent window, a hemispherical bubble with a diameter up to ${\sim}100{\mu}m$ can be formed with a lifetime in a few tens of microsecond depending on the laser power and the focal-spot size. Parametric study has been performed to reveal the effect of laser pulse width, output power, ink concentration, and color on the bubble dynamics. The results show that the bubble generated by a laser pulse is largely similar to that produced by a thin-film heater. Consequently, the present work demonstrates the feasibility of developing a laser-actuated droplet generation mechanism for applications in ink-jet print heads. Furthermore, the results of this work indicate that the droplet generation frequency is likely to be further increased by optimizing the process parameters.

  • Soft ferromagnetic materials are utilized for various electromagnetic devices such as magnetic recording heads and magnetic shielding. In situ observation of magnetic microstructures and domain wall motions are prerequisite for understanding and improving their magnetic properties. In this work, by the Fresnel (out-of-focus) method of Lorentz microscopy, we observe the domain wall motions of polycrystalline Ni/Ti thin film layers triggered by single-shot laser pulse. Random motions of domain walls were visualized at every single pulse.

  • During laser irradiation, mechanically deformed cartilage undergoes a temperature dependent phase transformation resulting in accelerated stress relaxation. Clinically, laser-assisted cartilage reshaping may be used to recreate the underlying cartilaginous framework in structures such as ear, larynx, trachea, and nose. Therefore, research and identification of the biophysical transformations in cartilage accompanying laser heating are valuable to identify critical laser dosimetry and phase transformation of cartilage for many clinical applications. quasi-elastic light scattering was investigated using Ho : YAG laser $(\lambda=2.12{\mu}m\;;\;t_p\sim450{\mu}s)$ and Nd:YAG Laser $(\lambda=1.32{\mu}m\;;\;t_p\sim700{\mu}s)$ for heating sources and He : Ne $(\lambda=632.8nm)$ laser, high-power diode pumped laser $(\lambda=532nm)$, and Ti : $Al_2O_3$ femtosecond laser $(\lambda=850nm)$ for light scattering sources. A spectrometer and infrared radiometric sensor were used to monitor the backscattered light spectrum and transient temperature changes from cartilage following laser irradiation. Analysis of the optical, thermal, and quasi-elastic light scattering properties may indicate internal dynamics of proteoglycan movement within the cartilage framework during laser irradiation.

  • Laser flash method have been widely used for practical measuring method of thermal diffusivity. And it can be used for measurement of non-conductive materials as well as conductive materials and also for measuring thermal multi-properties. We have analyzed effects of error occurring during measurement of thermal properties in order to enhance measuring accuracy. Also we have studied delay time between measurement starting time with synchronizing signal and laser oscillating time, because it is important that measuring a time to rise temperature of specimen from room temperature to a half of measuring temperature at measuring a thermal diffusivity by laser flash method. We could reduce non-uniform heating error from non-uniform energy distribution by developing 3D uniformizer to eliminate non-uniform heating error. We have measured thermal diffusivities of POCO AXM-5Q1 and Glassy-Carbon which are standard specimen of NIST(USA) and candidate standard specimen of NRLM(japan) respectively for laser flash method. Maximum error fell within 2% for POCO AXM-5Ql gaphite and 2% for Glassy-Carbon. Those results showed error decreasing methods were effective.
