FSI (Fluid Structure Interaction) method, in this study, has been applied to analyzing thermal characteristics of a high speed machine tool spindle system. The spindle is composed of angular contact ceramic ball bearings, a high speed built-in motor, a cooling jacket, and so on. The cooling jacket has three inlets and outlets. Using the FSI method, temperature distributions and thermal displacements of the spindle system were computed considering the heating of the front and rear bearings and the built-in motor. The results computed using the FSI method were compared with those determined by experiment and using the conventional numerical approach. The results determined using the FSI method were similar to those from the conventional numerical approach but showed better agreement with the experimental results. Therefore, it is concluded that the FSI method is useful for analyzing the thermal characteristics of high speed spindles and can be applied to the design of high speed spindles.

In this study, microstructure, hardening layer hardness, and case depth were evaluated after induction hardening(IH) of base metal specimen(BM) treated with annealing and quenching-tempering specimen(QT) treated with quenching and tempering. The microstructure after IH was significantly influenced by the microstructure before IH and the induction coil heating movement speed, but the effect of the induction frequency was very small. The hardness of the hardened layer at an induction coil heating movement speed of 15 mm/s or less was more influenced by the microstructure before IH than the induction coil travel speed and induction frequency. The induction coil travel speed has the significantly effect on the case depth, the induction frequency has effect and the microstructure before IH has a small effect.
Switch rail is a very important part on the railway track, which not only accounts for the safety of the passing trains but also greatly influences the speed of the train. The higher the speed and the loads of the train the more it demands on the properties of the switch rail. Research shows that the higher mechanical properties of switch rail the longer the service life. Induction heat treatment is a good way of improving the mechanical properties of metallic materials. But the switch rail's section area changes gradually across the lengthways, which is difficult for induction heating especially for the small section. And the mechanical property of small section of the switch rail is the most important for its service life. The induction heat treatment used past always brings the low hardness on small section which can cause low service life of switch for wearing, or too high hardness because of martensite microstructure which can cause the shelling or even breaking of the switch rail. To prolong the service life of switch rail by higher mechanical properties, we researched the improved induction heat treatment for switch rail by adjusting speed of heating, and adopting compressed air cooling. The results showed that switch rail obtain almost the same high hardness across the length way after the improved induction heat treatment, which is very helpful to extend the service life of switch rail.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate characteristics of plate forming by flame heating for E and EH36 TMCP steel. The characteristics of interest were heat-formability of TMCP steel and mechanical properties of heated area. For a given dimension, heat-formability of TMCP steel was inferior to that of a conventional steel because TMCP steel required more heating passes and time. Angular distortion and transverse shrinkage of TMCP steel decreased with an increase in line heating speed for given heating conditions. The mechanical properties of TMCP steel after plate forming by flame heating were high enough to satisfy the requirements.
The purpose of this study is to establish the optimum line heating condition to straighten the excessive bending distortion of a thin plate welded structure. For it, the extensive FEA and experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of heat source, heating speed and position on the straightening of a thin plate welded structure. In accordance with the results obtained by FEA and experiments, the straightening effect of line heating was strongly depends on the variables used in this study. With the results, the optimum line heating condition was established by using the response surface method and verified through comparing it with the numerical analysis result.
Recently, the demand for the development of high quality and high-speed laser printers and efficient power utilization has required. Among complicated electro-mechanic devices in laser printers, the toner-fusing unit consumes above 90[%] of all electrical energy needed for printing devices. Therefore, the development of a more effective energy-saving toner fusing process becomes a significant task in great demand. Generally, there are several ways to implement a fusing unit. Among them this paper presents a new induction heating method. The proposed induction heating method enables the increase of coupling coefficient between heating coil and heat roller which also increases total energy transfer efficiency. Therefore, the proposed IH (Induction Heating) inverter system provides very fast W.U.T. (Warm UP Time) as well as higher efficiency. Through experimental results, the proposed control system is verified.
Digital Variable Structure Controller(DVSC) is proposed to control variable speed recirculating pump for hot-water heating control system. In this study, nonlinear sliding line is used beyond output error boundary layer and PID sliding line is used within the layer. For long dead time compensation, constraint is added to Smith predictor algorithm. Steady state error is eliminated by using the proposed sliding line in spite of heating load change. By decreasing sampling time, good sliding motion is yielded but system output noise bv flow dynamics is amplified.
A study off riction welding of high speed steel(SKH 51) bar for blade side to carbon steel(STC 3)bar for shank side was carried out experimentally through tensile test, hardness test, microstructure, and acoustic emission (AE) test. So, this paper deals with optimizing the welding conditions and the real-time quality (strength) evaluation of friction weleded joints by acoustic emission technique. The results obtained are summarized as follows: (1) For friction welded joints of SKH 51to STC 3 steel bars, the total upset (U) increases linearly with an increase of heating time (t sub(1)). (2) The determined optimum welding conditions are heating time (t sub(1)) 7-9 sec, upsetting time (t sub(2)) 5 sec, heating pressure(P sub(1)) 12 kg sub(f)mm supper(2), upsetting pressure (P sub(2)) 15 kg sub(f) mm supper(2) and rotating speed (n) 2, 000 rpm, resulting in a computed relationship between the tensile strength of the joint .sigma. (kg sub(f) mm supper(2)) and the heating time t sub(1) (sec) as the following. sigma.=2.39t sub(1)
Friction welding is a very useful joining process to weld metals which have axially symmetric cross section. In this paper, for the friction welding with tube-to-tube shape, the feasibility of industry application was determined using analyzing mechanical properties of weld and optimized welding variables was suggested. In order to accomplish this object, rotating speed, friction heating pressure, and friction heating time were selected as the major process variables and the experiment was performed in three levels of each parameter. Weld characteristic was investigated in terms of weld shape and metal loss, and 7mm of metal loss was regarded as the optimal metal loss. By tensile test, tensile strength and yielding strength was measured and fracture was occurred at base metal. In order to optimize the welding condition, fitness function was defined with respect to metal loss and yielding strength and the fitness values for each welding condition could be calculated in experimental range. Consequently, we set the optimal welding condition as the point which had maximum value of fitness function. As the result of this paper the optimal welding variables could be suggested as rotating speed was 1300 rpm, friction heating pressure was 15 MPa, and friction heating time was 10 sec.

For heat pumps used in a cold region, it is very important to obtain appropriate heating capacity. Several studies using a variable speed compressor and an additional heater have been performed to enhance heating capacity at low ambient temperatures. However, for outdoor temperature conditions below $-15^{\circ}C$, it is still difficult to obtain enough heating capacity above the rated value. In recent studies, the application of gas injection technique into a two-stage heat pump yielded noticeable heating performance improvement at low temperature conditions. In this study, the heating performance of a two-stage gas injection heat pump with a rated capacity of 3.5 kW was measured and analyzed by varying refrigerant charge amount and EEV opening at the standard heating condition. The heating performance of the two-stage gas injection heat pump was compared with that of a two-stage non-injection heat pump. The heating capacity and COP of the two-stage gas injection heat pump were improved by 2-10% at the optimal charging condition over those of the two-stage non-injection heat pump.
