This paper represents the experimental results of electrohrdrodynamic(EHD) micropump driven by traveling- wave voltage. We fabricated 60 electrodes array with $100{\mu}m$ width and $100{\mu}m$ interval on the pyrex glass. On that glass we fabricated the micro channel which had the cross section of 3mm by 0.5mm. This pump was driven by 6 phase square traveling-wave voltage. We used the corn oil for experiments and increased the temperature of fluid by resistive heater. An optical microscope with CCD camera and monitor was used for observation. The fluid velocity was large for the large driving voltage and the high temperature. This EHD pump had the fluid velocity in specific frequency (near 1Hz) which had relation to the charge relaxation time in that oil.
COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and has been developing by KARI for communication, ocean observation and meteorological observation. Conventional thermal control design, using MLI (Multi Layer Insulation), OSR (Optical Solar Reflector), heater and heat pipe, is utilized. Ka-band components are installed on South wall, while other equipment for sensors are installed on the opposite side, North wall. High dissipating communication units are located on external (surface) heat pipe and are covered by internal insulation blankets to decouple them from the rest of the satellite. External satellite walls are covered by MLI or OSR for insulation from space and for rejection internal heat to space. The ocean and meteorological sensors are installed on optical benches on the top floor to decouple thermally from the satellite. Single solar array wing is adopted in order to secure clear field of view of radiant cooler of IR meteorological sensor. This paper presents principles of thermal control design for the COMS.
Nucleate boiling experiments on heating surface of constant wall temperature were performed using R113 for almost saturated pool boiling conditions. A microscale heater array and Wheatstone bridge circuits were used to maintain a constant wall temperature condition of heating surface and to measure the heat flow rate with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Bubble images during the bubble growth were taken as 5000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. The bubble growth behavior was analyzed using the new dimensionless parameters for each growth regions to permit comparisons with previous experimental results at the same scale. We found that the new dimensionless parameters can describe the whole growth region as initial and later (thermal) respectively. The comparisons showed good agreement in the initial and thermal growth regions. In the initial growth region including surface tension controlled, transition and inertia controlled regions as divided by Robinson and Judd, the bubble growth rate showed that the bubble radius was proportional to $t^{2/3}$ regardless of working fluids and heating conditions. And in the thermal growth region as also called asymptotic region, the bubble showed a growth rate that was proportional to $t^{1/5}$, also. Those growth rates were slower than the growth rates proposed in previous analytical analyses. The required heat flow rate for the volume change of the observed bubble was estimated to be larger than the heat flow rate measured at the wall. Heat, which is different from the instantaneous heat supplied through the heating wall, can be estimated as being transferred through the interface between bubble and liquid even with saturated pool condition. This phenomenon under a saturated pool condition needs to be analyzed and the data from this study can supply the good experimental data with the precise boundary condition (constant wall temperature).

An antenna-coupled bolometer-type terahertz sensor was designed, fabricated, evaluated, and utilized to obtain terahertz transmission images. The sensor consists of a thin film bowtie antenna that resonates accordingly in response to an incident terahertz beam, a heater that converts the applied current in the antenna into heat, and a microbolometer that converts the rise in temperature into a change in resistance. The device is fabricated by a bulk micromachining process on a 4-inch silicon wafer. The fabricated sensor chip has a size of $2{\times}2mm$ and an active area of $0.1{\times}0.1mm^2$. The temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of the bolometer film (VOx) is 2.0%, which is acceptable for bolometer applications. The output sensor signal is proportional to the power of the incident terahertz beam. Transmission images were obtained with a 2-axis scanning imaging system that contained the sensor. The small active area of the sensor will enable the development of highly sensitive focal plane array sensors in terahertz imaging cameras in the future.
This paper presents an optimal design of a micro evaporator which maximizes the heat transfer coefficient. Number of gaps, spanwise distance and streamwise distance are selected as the geometric design parameters. Mass flow rate of the refrigerant is selected as the non-geometric design parameter. Temperature at the surface of the heater is measured to valuate the heat transfer coefficient. Nine experiments are conducted using $L_9(3^4)$ orthogonal array. Maximum heat transfer coefficient is 640 W/$m^2K$ at the parameters of 2 gaps, 0.2 mm spanwise distance, 1.0 mm streamwise distance and 0.72 g/s mass flow rate. Among the 3 geometric parameters, the spanwise distance is the most sensitive parameter influencing the heat transfer coefficient. We conduct a second stage of experiment to increase the heat transfer coefficient by reselecting the mass flow rate. We concluded that 0.87 g/s is the optimized flow rate for an active micro cooler resulting in a heat transfer coefficient of 651 W/$m^2K$.
COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and has been developing by KARI for communication, ocean and meteorological observations. It will be launched by ARIANE 5. Ka-band components are installed on South panel, where single solar array wing is mounted. Radiators, embedded heat pipes, external heat pipe, insulation blankets and heaters are utilized for the thermal control of the satellite. The Ka-band payload section is divided several areas based on unit operating temperature in order to optimize radiator area and maximize heat rejection capability. Other equipment for sensors and bus are installed on North panel. The ocean and meteorological sensors are installed on optical benches on the top floor to decouple thermally from the satellite. During the transfer orbit operation, satellite will be under severe thermal environments due to low dissipation of components, satellite attitudes and LAE(Liquid Apogee Engine) firing. This paper presents temperature and heater power prediction and validation of thermal control design during transfer orbit operation.
