  • Heat release analysis is a very importent method in understanding the combustion phenomena inside an engine cylinder. In this study, one-zone heat release analysis was used with the mesured cylinder pressures of an IDI(indirect injection), a HSDI(high speed direct injection) and a SI(spark ignition) engine. It has benefits of simple equation, fast speed, reliability. The object of the study is to compare the combustion characteristics among an IDI, a HSDI and SI engine. Result of analysis, the maximum heat release rate of a HSDI is higher than an IDI because of long ignition delay period. The heat release curve of a IDI is more linear than an HSDI, so the combustion characteristics of a IDI is similiar to that of an SI engine. There is a suggestion here that the combustion efficiency of a HSDI is highest of that of all engines because of the smallest heat transfer loss of all engines.

  • Heat release characteristics of live fire load are an important parameter for performance oriented fire safety design of a building. While investigations have been carried out on the fire load and its burning behavior in office, residential and commercial buildings and so on, little effort has been paid for the rational treatment of fire load in post office buildings in Japan. In this report, burning behavior of typical combustible objects in post office buildings are studied by measuring heat release rates of plastic palettes with and without postal envelopes or packages and special containers loading numbers of palettes. The test results suggest that dynamic heat release rate is highly dependent on the condition of palettes especially if they load appropriate amount of postal envelopes or not.

  • Not only mechanical properties, bonding properties, electro chemical properties, etc. but also fire safety is required in patch repair materials such as polymer modified cement mortar (PCM) which are used to deteriorated reinforced concrete structure. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to choice the appropriate repair materials because there are not enough information about fire safety properties of PCM. In this study, The combustion characters of PCM were evaluated through the heat release rate test and non-combustibility test. The pyrogenicity test uses the cone calorimeter based on the oxygen consumption method. The non-combustibility test is from the temperature change inside the furnace during the test. The effect of the types of polymer and polymer content were evaluated from the series of test. The results are like followings. 1) The higher the W/C of PCM, the lower the gross calorific value and heat generation rate in the heat release rate test. The amount of heat generation of PCM is like the order of VVA, EVA, and SBR in this study. 2) Some materials such as E45-100, E50-100, E60-100, S50-50, and S50-100 were estimated as not appropriate building materials in the non combustibility test.

  • The effect of the di-tertiary butyl peroxide (DTBP) additive on the heat release rate and emissions of a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine fueled with high Research Octane Number (RON) fuels were investigated. The experiments were performed using 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% (by volume) DTBP-RON90 blends. The RON90 Fuel was obtained by blending 90% iso-octane with 10% n-heptane. The experimental results show that the operation range was remarkably expanded to lower temperature and lower engine load with the DTBP additive in RON90 fuel. The first ignition phase of HCCI combustion was observed at 850 K and ended at 950 K while the hot ignition occurred at 1125 K for all fuels at different engine working conditions. The chemical reaction scale time decreases with the DTBP addition. As a result, the ignition timing advances, the combustion duration shortens, and heat release rates were increased at overall engine loads. Meanwhile, the unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) and CO emissions decrease sharply with the DTBP addition while the NOx emissions maintain at a lower level.

  • The study performed an actual fire experiment in order to propose the heat release rate of automobile that is the most basic architectural element for the fire safety design in a tunnel, whose importance has been recognized as the underground traffic tunnels are planned in Korean metropolitan cities. The heat release rate of a van is measured by the large scale calorimeter, in which the law of oxygen consumption is applied, and the fire expansion characteristics in a tunnel by placing two passenger cars nearby one another in the tunnel. As the results, the heat release rate of the van was revealed to be 5.9 MW, and carbon monoxide was emitted 482 ppm at a maximum. In case of two passenger car experiment for the fire expansion characteristics, the adjacent car was ignited about 3 minutes 30 seconds after the fire occurrence, and the complete fire was developed after 15 minutes. The maximum heat release was 9 MW. The results from the actual fire experiment can be an important input data for future quantitative analysis as well as an element applicable to a tunnel disaster preventive equipment design.

  • The present study has been conducted to analyse the effects of various pool diameters on the measurement of heat release rate (HRR) of heptane fire using large scale cone calorimeter (LSC). The burning rate which is the major parameter for HRR compared with the previous model suggested by A. Hamins. The combustion efficiency for heptane by oxygen consumption method is about 91%, which is almost same with the previous results of 92% suggested by J. Gore. The convective HRR by enthalpy consumption method was 54% lower than HRR by oxygen consumption method. This results are practical use for establishing the reliability of heat release rate for fire experiment.

  • Effects of ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM)/polypropylene (PP), zinc oxide, stearic acid, and clay on the combustive properties based on EPDM/PP were investigated. The EPDM/PP/clay nanocomposites was compounded to prepare specimen for combustive analysis by cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). It was found that the combustive properties in the nanocomposites decreased due to the fire resistance compared with unfilld EDPM/PP. The nanocomposites showed the lower peak heat release rate (PHRR) than that of virgin EPDM/PP, while stearic acid for softening ruber increased the mean heat release rate (MHRR) by itself, combustible.

  • Since the energy storage method by means of the thermochemical reaction has no heat loss by separating the reactants under the storage period, it is remarked as one of promising means particularly for long-term heat storage. In this study, the heat-storage/-release characteristics of the reversible chemical reaction cycle, $Ca(OH)_2/CaO$, is numerically analysed by a mathematical modelling. As a result, the effectiveness of the heat exchanger by the chemical heat storage method is considerably higher than that by the sensible heat storage method. It is found that the major parameters, which determines the effectiveness of the heat exchanger, are the mass flow rate and inlet temperature of fluid, the residence time, etc.. The heat-storage/-release period can be controlled by changing the operation conditions. It is expected that the results obtained here will supply useful informations in designing a regenerative heat exchanger utilizing the thermochemical reaction.

  • To study the combustion characteristics of forest fuel by fire intensity, the experiment of combustion characteristics on Pinus Densiflora living leaves, which is the weakest species to the forest fire, was delivered, using variables of heat flux(25 kW/$m^2$, 50 kW/$m^2$, 75 kW/$m^2$). With the equipment of Cone calorimeter, the characteristics of ignition, heat, smoke release, CO and $CO_2$ release, and mass loss were analyzed. Pinus Densiflora living leaves containing moisture of 60.66% were not ignited at the heat flux of variables 25 kW/$m^2$, 50 kW/$m^2$, 75 kW/$m^2$. In proportion to the heat flux value, heat release amount and heat release rate reached maximum value rapidly: higher variables came to the maximum by the half rapidity and the maximum value were twice higher than the former lower variables respectively. As for the smoke release, the less heat flux the variable had, the more smoke release it had, due to incomplete combustion. The release amount of CO and $CO_2$ had more maximum value as the heat flux increased and more radiant heat meaned more carbon oxide. When the forest fire breaks out, therefore, a great amount of CO and $CO_2$ will be released by Pinus Densiflora.
