  • Operating medium or large scale industrial boilers in partial load condition, the burner should undergo the off-design points resulting in poor exhaust gas characteristics. To obtain the stable turn down performance, two or more burners can be used for the industrial boiler. In case multiple burners are adopted, the heat transfer can be enhanced by arranging the burners properly. In the present study, numerical simulations have been conducted for the combustion chamber of a 2 t/h class industrial boiler in order to clarify the heat transfer characteristics at the combustion chamber.

  • The present study investigates on the experimental and numerical results of heat transfer in the acoustic fields induced by ultrasonic waves. The strong upwards flow which moves from the bottom surface in a cavity to the free surface called as "acoustic streaming" was visualized by a particle image velocimetry (PIV). In addition, the augmentation ratio of heat transfer was experimentally investigated in the presence of acoustic streaming and was compared with the profiles of acoustic pressure calculated by the numerical analysis. A coupled finite element-boundary element method (FE-BEM) was applied for a numerical analysis. The results of experimental and numerical studies clearly show that acoustic pressure variations caused by ultrasonic waves in a medium are closely related to the augmentation of heat transfer.

  • In this article, the theory of fractional order two temperature generalized thermoelasticity is employed to study the wave propagation in a fiber reinforced anisotropic thermoelastic half space in the presence of moving internal heat source. The whole space is assumed to be under the influence of gravity. The surface of the half-space is subjected to an inclined load. Laplace and Fourier transform techniques are employed to solve the problem. Expressions for different field variables in the physical domain are derived by the application of numerical inversion technique. Physical fields are presented graphically to study the effects of gravity and heat source. Effects of time, reinforcement, fractional parameter and inclination of load have also been reported. Results of some earlier workers have been deduced from the present analysis.

  • Natural convection and radiation heat transfer in a square enclosure containing absorbing, emitting, and isotopically scattering(participating) media is studied numerically using the finite volume method. Various numerical methods are employed to analyze the radiative heat transfer. However, it is very difficult to choose the proper method. In present study, a finite volume method(FVM) and a discrete ordinates method(DOM) are compared in rectangular enclosure. The SIMPLER algorithm is used to solve the momentum and energy equations. Thermal and flow characteristics are investigated according to the variation of radiation parameters such as optical thickness and scattering albedo. The result shows that the accuracy and the computing time of FVM are better than those of DOM in regular geometry.

  • The commercial activated carbons are typically prepared by activation from coconut shell char or coal char containing lots of inorganic impurities. They also have pore structure and pore size distribution depending on nanostructure of precursor materials. In this study, two types of commercial activated carbons were applied for EDLC electrode by removing impurities with acid treatments, and controlling pore size distribution and contents of functional group with heat treatment. The effect of the surface functional groups on electrochemical performance of the activated carbon electrodes was investigated. The initial gravimetric and volumetric capacitance of coconut based activated carbon electrode which was acid treated by $HNO_3$ and then heat treated at $800^{\circ}C$ were 90 F/g and 42 F/cc respectively showing 94% of charge-discharge efficiency. Such a good electrochemical performance can be possibly applied to the medium capacitance of EDLC.

  • Small and medium-size buildings employ a multi-distributed individual air-conditioning system utilizing package air conditioners instead of centralized cooling systems, which can allow easier building management and maintenance along with a diversification of facility use. Inverter driven system heat pumps have been developed to achieve not only easy distribution control allowing free combination of indoor units with different models and different capacities, but also wide applications to an intelligent air conditioning. In this study, the transient performance of a system heat pump was analysed with the variation of compressor speed and EEV openings. The superheat was selected as a control parameter of the system, because the variation of it was consistent with each indoor unit capacity.

  • In this work, we developed an accurate and efficient radiative finite volume method applicable for the complex 2D planar and 3D geometries using an unstructured-grid finite volume method. The present numerical model has fully been validated by several benchmark cases including the radiative heat transfer in quadrilateral enclosure with isothermal medium, tetrahedral enclosure, a three-dimensional idealized furnace, as well as convection-coupled radiative heat transfer in a square enclosure. The numerical results for all cases are well agreed with the previous results. Special emphasis is given to the parallelization of the unstructured-grid radiative FVM using the domain decomposition approach. Numerical results indicate that the present parallel unstructured-grid FVM has the good performance in terms of accuracy, geometric flexibility, and computational efficiency.

  • The solution of hyperbolic equation with wave nature has sharp discontinuties in the medium at the wave front. Difficulties encounted in the numrtical solution of such problem in clude among oth-ers numerical oscillation and the representation of sharp discontinuities with good resolution at the wave front. In this work inviscid Burgers equation and modified heat conduction equation is intro-duced as hyperboic equation. These equations are caculated by numerical methods(explicit method MacCormack method Total Variation Diminishing(TVD) method) along various Courant numbers and numerical solutions are compared with the exact analytic solution. For inviscid Burgers equa-tion TVD method remains stable and produces high resolution at sharp wave front but for modified heat Conduction equation MacCormack method is recommmanded as numerical technique.

  • The insulation provided by clothing system is usually expressed in terms of a coo units and its distribution of the body, directly affect convective, conductive, and radiant heat loss from the skin to the environment Evaporated heat loss is dependent upon fabric permeability, the amount of body surface area covered by clothing, and the pumping of air between the body and garment layers. Persons at low to medium activity levels, dressed in conventional apparel in door environments, usually do not lose a large amount of heat through evaporation. Thermal manikin technology is used to measure the resistance to heat transfer provided by clothing systems. The reciprocal of this value, 6.45 W/m2.$^{\circ}C$ is often used in calculations for convenience. The purpose of this study was to implement a research program for calculation the insulation value (clo), body surface area and basal metabolic rate of selected clothing system. The project provided for the building of an insulation data base for use in evaluating and comparing new and improved garments.
