  • Land surface temperature (LST) for large areas can only be derived from surface-leaving radiation measured by satellite sensors. These measurements represent the integrated effect of the surface and are superior to point measurements on the ground, e.g. in Urban Heat Island. ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) is an imaging instrument that is flying on the NASA's Terra satellite launched in December 1999. ASTER acquires 14 spectral bands and can be used to obtain detailed datas of land surface temperature, emissivity, reflectance and elevation. Spatial resolution of 90m of TIR channels of ASTER is useful when we analyze the spatial variations of surface heat fluxes in urban areas. The purpose of this study is to extract the LST using ASTER TIR channels.

  • This study has been carried out to investigate the effect of vacuum on the thermal performance of a nonglass evacuated tube. A series of measurements are made indoors to monitor the temperature change of the absorber plate contained in the evacuated tube under different conditions of vacuum and heat fluxes. Those temperatures measured at the thermal equilibrium could be used to assess the heat losses to the ambient in link with the steady operation of non-glass evacuated tubes for solar exploitation.

  • Two-phase cross-flow exists in many shell-tube heat exchangers such as nuclear steam generators, condensers and reboilers. An understanding of damping and of flow-induced vibration excitation mechanisms in necessary to avoid problems due to excessive tube vibration. In this paper, we present the results of experiments on normal-triangular tube bundles of pitch to tube diameter ratio, p/d, 1.22, 1.32 and 1.47. The bundle were subjected to air-water mixtures to simulate realistic mass fluxes and vapour qualities corresponding to void fractions from 5 to 99%. Damping, fluidelastic instability and turbulence- induced excitation are discussed. The behaivior of damping and two vibration mechanisms are different for intermittent flows from for bubbly flows. The effect of pitch to tube diameter ratio and void fraction is dominant on damping and fluidelastic instability.

  • An inverse boundary analysis of surface radiation in an axisymmetric cylindrical enclosure has been conducted in this study. Net energy exchange method was used to calculate the radiative heat flux on each surface, and a hybrid genetic algorithm was adopted to minimize an objective function, which is expressed by sum of square errors between estimated and measured heat fluxes on the design surface. We have examined the effects of the measurement error as well as the number of measurement points on the estimation accuracy.

  • The transient heat transfer characteristics in the radiant heating panel were predicted by numerical analysis. Thermal behaviors of panel, such as temperature distributions in panel and convective and radiative heat fluxes in panel surface with respect to time were obtained. Heating hours per day, rate of energy supplied and maximum temperature differences at panel surface were also compared for several important parameters. The performance and thermal comfort of heating panel were studied and compared for various operating and design conditions such as pipe pitch, pipe location, pipe diameter and flow rate of hot water for the purpose of producing useful data, which can be used for the test and decision of efficient operating condition of the conventional heating systems or the optimal design of the new panel heating systems.

  • ZnO and SiC powders were fabricated to make crack-free composite membranes. Parts of some membranes were re-treated with an encapsulation process. These membranes were characterized by XRD, BET, and FE-SEM analyzes. The hydrogen permeation fluxes of the encapsulated and heat-treated membranes after encapsulation were observed using Sievert's type equipment. Values were measured at 1 bar with increasing temperatures. The obtained values of encapsulated and further heat-treated membrane at 298 K were $4.20{\times}10^{-6}$ and $8.64{\times}10^{-5}mol/m^2sPa$, respectively.

  • In this study, an experimental study was performed to understand the boiling heat transfer characteristics of FC-72 in parallel micro-channels. The parallel micro-channels contained channels having a $0.2mm{\times}0.45mm$ [$H{\times}W$] cross section and length of 60 mm. And heat flux was varied from 16.4 to $25.6kW/m^2$ and mass fluxes from 300 to $500kg/m^2s$. The measured heat transfer coefficient was sharply decreased at lower vapor quality and then it was kept approximately constant as the vapor quality is increased. From the experimental results, the boiling heat transfer mechanism of FC-72 was confirmed and the measured heat transfer coefficient was compared and analyzed with the existing correlations to predict the heat transfer coefficient.

  • In this study, boiling heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) and critical heat flux(CHF) are measured on a smooth square flat copper heater in a pool of pure water with and without carbon nano tubes(CNTs) dispersed at $60^{\circ}C$. Tested aqueous nanofluids are prepared using multi-walled CNTs whose volume concentrations are 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, and 0.05%. For dispersion of CNTs, polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP) is used in distilled water. Pool boiling HTCs are taken from $10kW/m^2$ to critical heat flux for all nanofluids. Test results show that the pool boiling HTCs of the nanofluids are lower than those of pure water in entire nucleate boiling regime. On the other hand, critical heat flux is enhanced greatly showing up to 200% increase at volume concentration of 0.001% CNTs as compared to that of pure water. This is related to the change of surface characteristics by the deposition of CNTs. This deposition makes a thin CNT layer on the surface and the active nucleation sites of heat transfer surface are decreased due to this layer. The thin layer acts as the thermal resistance and also decreases the bubble generation rate resulting in a decrease in pool boiling HTCs. The same layer, however, maintains the nucleate boiling even at very high heat fluxes and reduces the formation of large vapor canopy at near CHF resulting in a significant increase in CHF.

  • The quenching of steels by water is one of the imprtant problems in the applications of heat treatment, but the fundamental researches by way of theoretical approaches have not been satisfactorily improbed yet. This study aimed at measuring the exact subcooled transient boiling curve for cylindrical specimens and at conducting the analytical researches into the prediction of cooling curves, including the latent heat of phase transformation of steel. Experiments of quenching were made with cylindrical specimens of carbon steel S45C of diameters from 12 to 30 mm and with Cu specimens of 12 mm diameter respectively. The internal temperature of specimens during the quenching process was measured by C-A sheathed thermocouple. The heat fluxes were numerically calculated by the numerical method of inverse heat conduction problem, using the measured inner temperature of specimen as a boundary condition. In case of ${\Delta}T_{sub}=80K$, $q_{s}$ is as follows $q_{s}=2.02{\times}10^{5}{\Delta}T_{set}^{0.05}:{\Delta}T_{set}\le500K.$ And the numerical analysis of unsteady heat conduction during the quenching process was made and the cooling curves were calculated by TDMA method.

  • The combustion characteristics and combustion heat of sandwich panel cores were analysed using variable external irradiation level. The characteristics such as ignition time, critical heat flux, ignition temperature and surface temperature profile were measured. Fuel samples were exposed to incident heat fluxes from 15 to $50\;kW/m^2$. For the measurement of various combustion characteristics, the size of specimen was $100\;mm\;{\times}\;100\;mm\;{\times}\;50\;mm$ and the samples were 3 different kinds. As results, Type B showed the best characteristics in measurement of combustion heat and ignition temperature and Type C showd the best characteristics in critical heat flux and surface temperature profile than that of the other two. In conclusion, we knew that Type C had the best performance in fire safety from all data of this study.
