  • A plate-fin-tube heat exchanger used for a $SF_{6}$ gas-insulated transformer is extremely important since the dissipation of the heat generated from inside coils has a significant effect on the performance as well as the durability of the transformer. The heat exchanger consists of corrugated plate fins and staggered array tube bundles for coolant. In order to find out heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics, series of numerical analyses for plate fins with enhanced surface geometries were conducted. Based on the results of the numerical analyses, an improved model of the plate fin has been proposed.

  • A numerical analysis is performed to evaluate mass flow balance in the heat exchanger for the dehumidifier. To improve the mass flow balance for maximum heat transfer performance, inlet, outlet and baffle are changed. Mass flow balance is evaluated by non-uniformity of flow which is the same concept with the standard deviation. Usually, there will occur many paths between the inlet and the outlet, however, it will follow shortest and low resistance ways. The uniform distribution of flow is numerically analyzed for several types of heat exchangers. Making the shortest way between the inlet and the outlet is most important factor. Two types of heat exchangers are installed in the dehumidifier and 4 cases of Type A heat exchangers and 3 cases of Type B heat exchangers are evaluated and optimized. The result of this research is applied to design heat exchanger for commercial dehumidifiers.

  • This study investigates the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of heat exchanger according to the combination of fin configuration and fin pitch of each row by the similitude experiments with the finned-tube geometry scaled as large as four times Finned-tube heat exchanger has 2 rows, and fin geometry consists of two cases, louver-louver and louver-slit. Fin pitch is varied with three types in each case, 6-6 mm, 8-8 mm and 8-6 mm. Results show that total heat transfer can be occurred evenly at each row by varying the fin pitch of 1st row and 2nd row. Heat transfer rate and pressure drop characteristics change according to the combination for fin geometry and fin pitch.

  • The thermal performance of a modular shell and tube-bundle heat exchanger has been analyzed using section-by-section method. Investigated are the effects of air and water inlet conditions on condensation heat transfer of horizontal tubes. It is found that they are significant for the heat transfer of the modular shell and tube-bundle heat exchanger It is shown that the predictions and experimental results are in good agreements.

  • The commercial viability of heat exchanger is mainly dependent on their long-term fouling characteristics because the feeling increases the pressure loss and degrades the thermal performance of a heat exchanger An experimental study was performed to investigate the characteristics of fluid flow in a fluidized bed heat exchanger with circulating various solid particles. The present work showed that the drag force coefficients of particles in the internal flow were higher than in the external flow, in addition, they were lower with the shapes of particles being closer to the spherical geometries.

  • In this study, the effects of the various conditions of frosting and defrosting on the behavior of defrosting in a fin-tube heat exchanger have been examined experimentally. The electric heater is used for defrosting in a fin-tube heat exchanger It is shown that there are several local maxima in the water draining rate. The amount of residual water on the heat exchanger after the completion of defrosting is kept constant due to surface tension on the heat exchanger. Without considering the degradation of the thermal performance due to the frosting, the defrosting efficiency is improved with increasing amount of the frost irrespective of the frosting condition. The defrosting behavior is affected by the frosting density as well as the frost accumulation, which vary with the experimental operating conditions during the frosting period. The heat loss to the surrounding air decreases, and the melting and defrosting efficiencies show high values with decreasing heat input.

  • The objectives of this paper are to study the effects of thermal and geometric conditions on the performance of indoor heat exchanger with R410A for Gas Engine Driven Heat Pump (GHP) application and to find optimum design conditions of indoor heat exchanger by parametric analysis for the key parameters. In the air side, moisture out of the humid air condenses on the fin surface while the refrigerant (R410A) boils inside the smooth tube. Therefore this study uses Log Mean Enthalpy Difference (LMHD) method to analyze the heat transfer from the humid air to the refrigerant of R410A. The results show that fin pitch and longitudinal pitch have significant effect on the heat exchanger preformance. This study will provide the guideline for optimum design of indoor heat exchanger with R410A for GHP application.

  • In order to estimate the efficiency of an evaporative heat exchanger having mini channel, the equations to calculate heat exchanger properties, those are air temperatures and water temperatures etc, are derived from the governing equations based on the Navier-Stokes equation, even though there are several assumptions to make problem simplify. There are three heat transfer zones at the mini channel heat exchanger depending on the water condition. So, there are three governing equations and solutions to calculate the properties. As the results of this study, the equations to calculate a saturation point and a dry point are derived to evaluate an evaporative heat exchanger having micro channel. It is supposed to predict and evaluate the performance of a mini channel heat exchanger with evaporation of liquid.

  • The advantages of a printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) are the compactness and efficiency derived from its heat-transfer characteristics; furthermore, a PCHE for which a diffusion bonding method was used during production can be applied to extreme environments such as a cryogenic condition. In this study, a micro-channel PCHE fabricated by diffusion bonding was investigated in a cryogenic environment regarding its thermal performance and the pressure drop. The test rig consists of an LN2 storage tank, vaporizers, heaters, and a cold box, whereby the vaporized cryogenic nitrogen flows in hot and cold streams. The overall heat-transfer coefficients were evaluated and compared with traditional correlations. Lastly, we suggested the modified heat-transfer correlations for a PCHE in a cryogenic condition.
