  • This study experimentally investigates the performance improvement of the heat pump by adopting the hot gas bypass method and using the internal heat exchanger according to the automatic defrost test conditions of ISO 5151 This study compares the hot gas bypass method with the time step method, and investigates effect on outdoor coil fan speed when the hot gas of compressor outlet enter outdoor coil inlet after the frost formation. The tests were made for the fan speeds of the outdoor coil controlled at 90, 60 and 30% of the normal speed together with the case of the stationary fan. The performance of the heat pump is evaluated by variables such as COP, heat capacity, and the average COP during the 210 minutes heating mode. Results show that average COP of the hot gas bypass mettled is $2.2{\sim}6%$ higher than that of the time step method. When the outdoor coil fan speed is 60% (780 rpm) of the normal speed, it shows the best COP and heating capacity.

  • The heat transfer characteristics of horizontal and vertical mantle heat storage tanks are studied in order to replace the tank-coil heat exchanger for application in thermosyphon solar water heaters. In this study, 5 mantle storage tanks with different geometric shape are manufactured into stainless steel and each tank is tested. For the test, The inlet flow rate of the heat transfer fluid is maintained 1.2 lpm consistently. The heat transfer fluid temperature through the mantle is $70{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The temperatures of 26 points included the ambient temperature are measured at every one minute. The measured data are used to calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient(UA) using the LMTD(Log Mean Temperature Difference) method and it is used on the analysis of the heat transfer characteristics to search for optimum arrangement.

  • Optimal design of heat exchanger for closed CO$_{2}$ gas turbine plant of three processes selected from the result of cycle analysis have been discussed previously paper(I) has been carried out under specified inlet and outlet conditions. Independent variables such as number of parallel connection, tube diameter, shell side and tube side pressure loss as well as dependent variables such as shell diameter, number of tubes, number of serial connections were all characterized according to the standardization or so. Search method was used to construct a computer simulation together with the calculation of heat transfer rate by logarithmic mean temperature difference method. Strength analysis of major parts was carried to examine their dimensions satisfying heat transfer and pressure loss requirements.

  • In this study, the heat transfer and flow field of a condenser used for a Kim-chi refrigerator is analysed with numerical method. Main objective is to present the basic data for designing a new condenser model with improvement of heat transfer performance. For CFD analysis, a commercial code, STAR CCM+ was used. The water was used for the inner working fluid and the air was used for the outer fluid. The condenser type used in this study is a flat plate fin-and-tube heat exchanger. As analysis parameters, the effect of condenser geometry and air velocity was investigated. For validation of the numerical calculations, the results were compared with the experimental ones. The heat transfer rates for both results were consistent with each other by maximum 5 % error. Based on this comparison, the numerical analysis was done with some modifications. As a result, it has been observed that there is a suitable fin pitch with which heat transfer performance of condenser is maximized.

  • Heat exchanger tube array in a heat recovery steam generator is exposed to the hot exhaust gas flow and it could cause the flow induced vibration, which could damage the heat exchanger tube array. It is needed for the structural safe operation of the heat exchanger to establish the characteristics of flow induced vibration in the tube array. The researches for the flow induced vibration of typical heat exchangers have been conducted and the nondimensional PSD(Power Spectral Density) function with the Strouhal number, fD/U, had been derived by experimental method. The present study examined the results of the previous experimental researches for the nondimensional PSD characteristics by CFD analysis and the basis for the application of flow induced vibration to the heat recovery steam generator tube array would be prepared from the present CFD analysis. For the previous mentioned purpose, the present CFD analysis introduced a single circular cylinder and calculated with the unsteady laminar flow over the cylinder. The characteristics of vortex shedding and lift fluctuation over the cylinder was investigated. The derived nondimensional PSD was compared with the results of the previous experimental researches and the characteristics of lift PSD over a single circular cylinder was established from the present CFD study.

  • In this study, a progressive process was performed to fabricate the inner fin of a high-efficiency heat exchanger. A forming simulation was also carried out on the concavo-convex of the inner fin, forming a simulation based on elastic-plastic finite element method. The forming analysis where the speed of the press descended and ascended was set to five seconds showed that the effective stress was at a maximum of about 69 MPa in the curved portion where the bending occurred. Therefore, the die was designed based on the simulation results, and the inner fin die was installed on the 400-ton capacity press. After that, the inner fin fabrication experiment was conducted under the same condition as the simulation. Crack was not found from the curved portion of the concavo-convex of the inner fin. The profile of the concavo-convex of the prepared inner fin measured 6.7~6.8 mm in depth, 2.65~2.7 mm in width, and 0.3 mm in thickness.

  • Geothermal heat exchanger(GHEX) is a major component of Geothermal heat pump system(GSHPs). In Common, We use the vertical type GHEX in Korea. But vertical type GHEX needs a high cost for installation, because of drilling the hole which has 200m depth at max. So, We suggest the use of horizontal type GHEX. When we construct buildins, We excavate the ground and we can install the horizontal type GHEX at the excavated underground. It's very cheap and convenient method compare to vertical type GHEX installation. This study is peformed to estimate the peformance of horizontal type GHEX and to analyze effects of heat exchanger types and undergroundwater. As the result, slinky type GHEX has a 66% efficiency compare to vertical type GHEX and mat type has a 201% efficiency at the undergroundwater zone.

  • A numerical simulation has been carried out for the automotive air conditioning system. The purpose of this simulation is to present the methods for simulating car air conditioning components, systems and cool-down performance by computerized mathematical model and to analyze the performance of A/C system. In analyzing the heat exchanger(evaporator and condenser), the finite volume model which has a merit in predicting the temperature field in detail because it can consider partial variation of thermal property and heat transfer coefficient is used. In analyzing the compressor, the polytropic approach which regards the actual compression process as a reversible polytropic process is employed. In analyzing vehicle passenger compartment, the thermal network is employed to simulate the car cool down process. This A/C system program can be used for analyzing a component performance when a component is alternated or designed and for analyzing the engine cooling system when A/C system is operated.
