A sea water source cascade heat pump was designed and tested in this study. The system was designed to perform a single stage operation in summer, as well as a cascade operation in winter to ensure the high temperature lift. A steady-state simulation model was developed to analyze and optimize its performance. The simulation results show that the R717 exhibits best performance among combinations considered in this study. A R410A also exhibits the highest performance among HFCs with the smallest compressor displacement. A 15-RT R410A-R134a pilot system was installed in the 5-story commercial building at Samcheok City by the East Sea. A scroll type R410A compressor, a reciprocating type R134a compressor, plate type condenser/evaporator/ cascade heat exchanger and two electronic expansion valves were used to build a pilot. A titanium plate type heat exchanger is also used for the heat exchanging with a sea water. The heat source/sink water is supplied from the well below the seashore in the depth of 5 m. In the initial test of the system, supply water temperature was rising up to $67^{\circ}C$ using a sea water heat source of $9^{\circ}C$, while an ambient temperature was $4.5^{\circ}C$.

Simulation was conducted using TRNSYS to evaluate the thermal performance of a facility. This facility has a condensing-type heat exchanger which is able to recover the latent energy for the purpose of reducing the heating energy in winter. The boiler and chiller are selected based on the annual peak loads and controlled to maintain the facility at the set temperature of 14~$17^\circ{C}$. Supplied energy by the boiler and recovered energy by the heat exchanger were calculated as a function of number of pass through heat exchanger, kind of fuel and hot water velocity. Simulation results show that about 20% of the total heating load can be recovered by the heat exchanger and the amount of latent heat is increasing with the number of pass. This means that the efficiency of the waste energy recovery system can be increased by using a condensing-type heat exchanger rather than a traditional sensible heat exchanger.

Design and off-design program is set up to analyze the performance of a plate heat exchanger. The program is verified by comparing the results with the experiment. The comparison shows that the predicted overall heat transfer coefficients are in good agreement with the measurements. Also the off-design performance according to the variations of inlet water temperature, flow rate, and the number of plates is analyzed to study the performance characteristic of a plate heat exchanger.
The evaporation heat transfer coefficient h$\_$r/ and frictional pressure drop Δp$\_$f/ of refrigerant R-134a flowing in the oblong shell and plate heat exchanger were investigated experimentally in this study. Four vertical counterflow channels were formed in the oblong shell and plate heat exchanger by four plates of geometry with a corrugated sinusoid shape of a 45 chevron angle. Upflow of refrigerant R-134a boils in two channels receiving heat from downflow of hot water in other channels. The effects of the refrigerant mass flux, average heat flux, refrigerant saturation temperature and vapor quality of R-134a were explored in detail. Similar to the case of a plate heat exchanger, even at a very low Reynolds number, the flow in the oblong shell and plate heat exchanger remains turbulent. The results indicate that the evaporation heat transfer coefficient h$\_$r/ and pressure drop Δp$\_$f/ increase with the vapor quality. A rise in the refrigerant mass flux causes an increase in the h$\_$r/ and Δp$\_$f/. But the effect of the average heat flux does not show significant effect on the h$\_$r/ and Δp$\_$f/. Finally, at a higher saturation temperature, both the h$\_$r/ and Δp$\_$f/ are found to be lower. The empirical correlations are also provided for the measured heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in terms of the Nusselt number and friction factor.

The air-cooled passive decay heat removal system (APDHR) was proposed to provide the ultimate heat sink for non-LOCA accidents. The APDHR is a modified one of Passive Auxiliary Feed-water system (PAFS) installed in APR+. The PAFS has a heat exchanger in the Passive Condensate Cooling Tank (PCCT) and can remove decay heat for 8 h. After that, the heat transfer rate through the PAFS drastically decreases because the heat transfer condition changes from water to air. The APDHR with a vertical heat exchanger in PCCT will be able to remove the decay heat by air if it has sufficient natural convection in PCCT. We conducted the thermal-hydraulic simulation by the MARS code to investigate the behavior of the APR + selected as a reference plant for the simulation. The simulation contains two phases based on water depletion: the early phase and the late phase. In the early phase, the volume of water in PCCT was determined to avoid the water depletion in three days after shutdown. In the late phase, when the number of the HXs is greater than 4089 per PCCT, the MARS simulation confirmed the long-term cooling by air is possible under extended Station Blackout (SBO).

In most direct contact liquid-liquid heat exchangers, oil or hydrocarbon with a density less than water is normally used as dispersed working fluid. The main difficulty that arises with this arrangement lies in the control of the interface at the top of the column. When it is connected with a solar collector which uses water as its working fluid, the main difficulties arise from the fact that the water can be frozen during winter time. In order to solve these problems and to demonstrate the technical feasibility of a direct contact liquid-liquid heat exchanger, liquids heavier than water with low freezing temperature has been utilized as dispersed phase liquids in a small laboratory scale model made of pyrex glass. In the present investigation, dimethyl phthalate(C/sub 6/H/sub 4/)COOCH/sub 3/)/sub 2/) and diethyl phthalate (C/sub 6/H/sub 4/(CO/sub 2/C/sub 2/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/) are utilized as heavy dispersed phase working fluids. The results of the present investigation the technical in the utilization of heavier dispersed working liquid in the spray-column liquid-liquid heat exchanger for a solar system. The overall average temperature difference along the column is found to be almost half of the initial temperature difference between the dispersed and the continuous phase. Despite the fact that the two phthalates tested in the experiment differ significantly in some of their physical properties, the volumetric heat transfer coefficients in terms of dispersed fluid superficial velocities were found to be similar for both phthalates tested.
This paper proposes an improved mathematical model for predicting the frosting behavior on a two-dimensional fin considering the heat conduction of heat exchanger fins under frosting conditions. The model consists of laminar flow equation in airflow, diffusion equation of water vapor for frost layer, and heat conduction equation in fin, and these are coupled together. In this model, the change in three-dimensional airside airflow caused by frost growth is accounted for. The fin surface temperature increased toward the fin tip due to the fin heat conduction. On the contrary, the temperature gradient in the airflow direction(x-dir.) is small throughout the entire fin. The frost thickness in the direction perpendicular to airflow, i.e. z-dir., decreases exponentially toward the fin tip due to non-uniform temperature distribution. The rate of decrease of heat transfer in the airflow direction is high compared to that in the z-direction due to more decrease in the sensible and latent heat rate in x-direction.
The research are performed to check the characteristics of the ice slurry transport system for the district cooling. The system are installed at the 1st floored building which is as large as the $1204\;m^2$ ($86\;m{\times}14\;m$). Three kinds of heat exchanger are selected, such as, plate, spiral and shell & tube type, to apply to the ice slurry systems. Experiment was done in the two cases. The first case, circulation water flow fixed at the design conditions for the state to change the flow of the supply of ice slurry. The second case, Ice slurry flow fixed at the design conditions for the state to change the flow of circulation water. Both side of Energy balance was calculated. The performance of plate heat exchanger is higher than others and it's enthalpy effectiveness is higher too.

A characteristic behavior of the thermal storage tank for varying thermal load in heat pump water heater was studied. The control method was suggested and applied. By measuring the temperature within the storage tank, the heat pump was ON/OFF controlled. The appropriate measuring position and the size of heat exchanger gives the minimized power consumption of heat pump. As the length of heat exchanger increases, the temperature measuring position goes down of the storage tank and the power consumption increases.
