  • Electronic components in an enclosure have been investigated to prevent undesired thermal problems. The electronic devices, such as ECUs of automotive engines, are operated under the contaminated environments, so that they rely on the passive cooling without any fluid-driving methods. Therefore the radiation heat dissipation plays more important role than the conduction and convection heat transfer. Hence their combined heat dissipation phenomena have been simulated by a numerical model to reveal the effects of supplied heat flux, emissivity of material, geometry of enclosure, charging gas and pressure. The result showed that the radiation had a significant effect on the heat dissipation of module in an enclosure, and some space above the module should be reserved to prevent its thermal problem. In addition, the higher thermal conductivity and pressure of gas in an enclosure could be necessary to improve the thermal dissipation from the electronic devices.

  • Geothermal energy is gaining wide attention as a highly efficient renewable energy and being increasingly used for heating/cooling systems of buildings. The standing column well (SCW) is especially efficient, cost-effective, and suitable for Korean geological and hydrological conditions. However, a numerical model that simulates the SCW has not yet been developed and applied in Korea. This paper describes the development of the SCW numerical model using a finite-volume analysis program. The model performs the hydro-thermal coupled analyses and simulates heat transfer through advection, convection, and conduction. The accuracy of the model was verified through comparisons with field data measured at SCWs in Korea. Comparisons indicated that the SCW numerical model can closely predict the performance of a SCW.

  • The input data for the interior material of the train is one of the key points for enhancing the accuracy of fire simulation. In this study, we investigated the Fire Test Methods for the Fire Dynamic Simulator modeling for railroad passenger trains. We should get the thermal inputs such as ignition temperature, conductivity, specific heat, vaporization heat, effective heat release. With the simple conduction model for cone-calorimeter test, they could get more than HRR. Kinds of methodology were introduced for better thermal data for real material.

  • In the present study, the characteristics of conductive and convective heat transfer occurred in a circular absorber of PTC (parabolic trough concentrator) for medium temperature solar energy utility were numerically investigated. A circular tube was considered as an absorber and the shape of PTC modeled in this study was based on the system that was installed in Korea Institute of Energy Research. Not only convection inside the tube but also conduction through the wall of the tube were analyzed, simultaneously. Circumferentially non-uniform heat flux that was simulated from the non-uniform solar disc model proposed by Jose was applied as thermal boundary condition on the tube surface. And, hydrodynamically fully developed laminar velocity profile was used as the inlet boundary condition and it was assumed that the working fluid was water. And, local heat fluxes at the interface of the tube and the working fluid were calculated for different wall thickness and thermal conductivity of the tube at various Reynolds number. Based on the results, the effects of thermal conduction of the tube on the local heat transfer were investigated.

  • The performance evaluation technique of a heat exchanger is described by using a transient response analysis for the determination of an average heat transfer coefficient. The model using a finite difference method can accommodate arbitrary inlet fluid temperature as well as longitudinal conduction. Temperature histories are obtained from the experiments at the inlet and outlet of test core. Heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of the plate array are obtained in short times using the data reduction program of transient response analysis in the single-blow method. The results agree very well with theoretical results. It is shown that the rms deviations are very small and the performance evaluation technique gives rapid and accurate results.

  • A numerical and experimental studies are carried out to investigate the transient heat transfer characteristics of 5kWth dish-type solar air receiver. Measured solar radiation and temperatures at several different locations are used as boundary conditions for numerical simulation. Many parameters' effects (reflectivity of the reflector, the thermal conductivity of the receiver body, transmissivity of the quartz window, etc.) on the thermal performance are investigated. Discrete Transfer Method is used to calculate the radiation heat exchange in the receiver. A transient heat transfer model is developed and the rate of radiation, convection and conduction heat transfer are calculated. Comparing the experimental and numerical results, good agreement is obtained. Using the numerical model, the transient heat transfer characteristics of volumetric air receiver for dish-type solar thermal systems are known and the transient thermal performance of the receiver can be estimated.

  • International efforts have focused recently on the development of tungsten surfaces that can intercept energetic ionized and neutral atoms, and heat fluxes in the divertor region of magnetic fusion confinement devices. The combination of transient heating and local swelling due to implanted helium and hydrogen atoms has been experimentally shown to lead to severe surface and sub-surface damage. We present here a computational model to determine the relationship between the thermo-mechanical loading conditions, and the onset of damage and failure of tungsten surfaces. The model is based on thermo-elasticity, coupled with a grain boundary damage mode that includes contact cohesive elements for grain boundary sliding and fracture. This mechanics model is also coupled with a transient heat conduction model for temperature distributions following rapid thermal pulses. Results of the computational model are compared to experiments on tungsten bombarded with energetic helium and deuterium particle fluxes.

  • A theoretical model for the interaction of the moving heat source and a solid substrate when they are in contact is described. for purposes of the model the substrate is assumed to act as a continuum and the Fourier equation for transient. three-dimensional conduction is solved using Laplace and Fourier transformations. Unlike most previous models, this model shows the explicit relations between the properties of heat source and that of the substrate. Since the size, shape and speed of heat source impact the ignition of substrate, considerable attention is devoted to evaluating these parameters. Results are presented which show the effects of the size, shape and speed of heat source on the substrate.

  • With the span and arch rib size of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) arch bridges increase, the hydration heat of pumped mass concrete inside large-size steel tube causes a significant temperature variation, leading to a risk of thermal stress-induced cracking during construction. In order to tackle this phenomenon, a hydration heat conduction model based on hydration degree was established through a nonlinear temperature analysis incorporating an exothermic hydration process to obtain the temperature field of large-size CFST. Subsequently, based on the evolution of elastic modulus based on hydration degree and early-age creep rectification, the finite element model (FEM) model and analytical study were respectively adopted to investigate the variation of the thermal stress of CFST during hydration heat release, and reasonable agreement between the results of two methods is found. Finally, a comparative study of the thermal stress with and without considering early-age creep was conducted.

  • The gas-solid reactor, such as rotary kiln, sintering bed, incinerator and CFB boiler, is the one of most widely used industrial reactors for contacting gases and solids. the gas-solid reactor are mainly used for drying, calcining and reducing solid materials. In the gas-solid reactor, heat is supplied to the outside of the wall or inside of the reactor. The heat transfer in gas-solid reactor encompasses all the modes of transport mechanisms, that is, conduction, convection and radiation. The chemical reactions occurring in the bed are driven by energy supplied by the heat transfer. This paper deal with the effect of heat transfer and chemical reaction in the gas-solid reactor.
