A novel TPC-PEG-TPC with active end-groups was obtained from the end-groups of polyethylene glycol (PEG) modified by terephthaloyl chloride (TPC). These active end-groups can link up with a rare earth ion, which is a luminescent center of a rare earth fluorescent complex. Complexes of Eu-PEG with novel ligands (TPC-PEG-PTC) were synthesized by the coordination of the active reactant (as the first ligand) and phenanthroline (as the second ligand) with $Eu^{3+}$.IR, $^1H$-NMR, element analysis, DSC, WAXD, fluorescent spectroscopy, TGA, and SEM were used to characterize the structure and properties of these complexes. The results showed that this type of complex is a heat storage material with the phase change character of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and the luminescent properties of europium. There was no thermal decomposition of the complex of Eu-PEG until $300^{\circ}C$. SEM showed that the complex of Eu-PEG can be dispersed in PE.

The purpose of this study is to suggest improvement plans for prevention regulations by reflecting the toxicity, fire and explosion effects of hazardous materials factories and surrounding areas using an off-site consequence assessment program. Regarding the effects of the hydrogen cyanide leak accident, which is the 1st petroleum of the 4th class flammable liquid, Areal Locations of Hazardous Atmospheres (ALOHA) program was used to compare and analyze the extent of damage effects for toxicity, overpressure, and radiation. As a result, the toxicity was analyzed to exceed 5km in the area with Acute exposure guideline level (AEGL)-2 concentration or higher, the overpressure was 103m in the range of 1 psi or more, and the radiant heat was analyzed to be 724m in the range of 2kw/m2 or more. Toxicity and radiation affected the area outside the hazardous material storage area, but the overpressure was limited to the inside of the hazardous material storage area. Therefore, we propose to improve the safety management of hazardous materials by conducting a risk assessment for hazardous materials and reflecting the results in internal and external emergency response plans to prepare prevention regulations.
In this research, Octacosane($C_{28}H_{58}$) and Sodium Acetate Trihydrate($CH_3COONa{\cdot}3H_2O$) were selected as latent heat storage materials to store off-peak electricity or waste heat of an industrial plant. Experimental analyses were performed in terms of the variation of phase change temperature and latent heat, phase change stability for the long term utilization. The results were as follows. 1. The phase change temperatures of industrial grade Octacosane and Sodium Acetate Trihydrate were $60.7^{\circ}C$ and $57.4^{\circ}C$, the latent heat were 60.6kcal/kg and 51.1kcal/kg respectively. 2. The latent heat quantity of Octacosane was decreased with the increasing number of phase change cycles. It decreased from 60.6kcal/kg to 47.2kcal/kg upto 200 cycles and then no variation was observed after 200 cycles. 3. To prevent the supercooling of Sodium Acetate Trihydrate, the nucleating agent, Sodium Pyrophosphate Decahydrate of 3 wt% was added, and then the supercooling temperature (Tm-Tsc) was decreased from $25.7^{\circ}C$ to $1^{\circ}C$. The phase separation was disappeared by the addition of CMC-Na of 3 wt% as a thickener. It was found that the optimal quantity of nucleating agent and thickener was 4wt% considering the stability of SAT as a latent heat storage material. 4. The phase change temperature of Sodium Acetate Trihydrate($CH_3COONa{\cdot}3H_2O$) was adjusted from 57.4 to $46.2^{\circ}C$ by the addition of UREA. And then the latent heat quantity was decreased from 51.1 to 38.3kcal/kg. 5. When the heat storage capacities between the sensible and latent heat storage materials were analyzed and compared in heating process from 30 to $90^{\circ}C$, the heat storage capacity of Octacosane was 2.45 times larger than water and 12.5 times than granite at $60.7^{\circ}C$, and the heat storage capacity of Sodium Acetate Trihydrate was 2.53 times larger than water and 12.91 times than granite at $57.4^{\circ}C$.
The viability of rhizobia according to various kinds of carrier materials, inoculum size, storage temperature and sterilization methods was investigated for the development of legume inoculat. The results were followings. 1. Peat and perlite were favorable as a carrier material. 2. Rhizobia counts were reached to $5{\times}10^8cells/g$ carrier 1-2 weeks after inoculation with inoculum size below $10^4cells/g$ carrier. 3. $10^9cells/g$ carrier was maintained 12 weeks after storage at room temperature. 4. Steam heat sterilization was the best method for carrier sterilization among methods used in this study. Dry heat and ${\gamma}$-ray sterilization were also applicable.
This study was aimed at developing a low cost cold storage system for agricultural products. Three kinds of slurries: $K_1$, $K_2$, and $K_3$ slurries were developed using phase change materials (PCMs) such as tetradecane, octadecane, and sodium polyacrylate to maintain the desired temperature ranges. The slurries were manufactured by in-situ polymerization. Tetradecane and octadecane were capsulated in a core with melamine at the surface. The thermodynamic characteristics of the slurries were measured and analyzed. The latent heats of the $K_1$, $K_2$, and $K_3$ slurries at the melting points were 206.41, 186.88, and 147.91 kJ/kg, respectively. A transportable cold storage container was built to investigate the performance of the slurries as thermal storage media. The temperatures at the insides of the container could be maintained in the ranges of 0-5, 5-10, and $10-15^{\circ}C$ for more than 23, 27, and 60 hr with the $K_1$, $K_2$, and $K_3$ slurries, respectively.
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the performance of a latent heat storage system using paraffin wax as the phase change material. A thermosyphon was employed to transfer heat from the hot ethylene glycol flowing across the evaporator section of the thermosyphon into the wax. In order to increase the effective thermal conductivity of wax, layers of copper wire mesh were immersed in the wax. Experiments were run for volume ratios of 2%, 3%, and 4%, varying mass flow rate of ethylene glycol in each case. Some of the important results are as follows : (1) The wire mesh enhanced the conductive hea transfer and thus, helped even out the temperature distribution in the wax : (2) The increase of the number of layers of wire mesh increased the conduction. However, it also resulted in increasing the resistance to the convective motion of liquefied wax : and (3) There is an optimal number of layers of wire mesh, maximizing the performance of the storage system, which occurred at a volume ratio of $3{\sim}4%$ in the present study.

The mechanical and thermal properties of high temperature aluminate cementitious thermal storage materials were investigated in this paper. Alumina cement was used as basic binder and the effect of the replacement of fly ash, silica fume, calcium sulfo-aluminate and graphite for alumina cement was investigated. Experiments were performed to measure mechanical properties including compressive strength before and after thermal cycling, and split tensile strength, and to measure thermal properties including thermal conductivity and specific heat. Test results show that the residual compressive strengths of mixtures with alumina cement only, or alumina cement and silica fume were greater than those of the others. Additionally, the specific heat of mixture with graphite was largest in all the mixtures used in the study. The results of this study could be used to provide realistic information for material properties in thermal energy storage concrete in the future.

To reduce the storage space of spent fuels used at the atomic power plants all over the world, the uranium elements contained in the spent fuels is being extracted and effectively stored. For this, the spent fuel are oxidized and deoxidized. In this study, it is produced conceptual design specification about the spent fuel management technology research and test facilities have been produced. The first considered processes in the facilities is the metal conversion furnace in the dry environment. Since this process is operates at the high temperature range, we have to consider heat-resisting designs for the device. For the heat-resisting designs, we have surveyed and analyzed technical references for material properties. Also, we have determined the temperature distribution condition of the device based on experimental results. We have calculated thermal stress and strain of each devices by the commercial analysis software, I-DEAS. By using the results, we have analyzed design configurations of the point at issue by thermal effects, and suggested alternative design configurations. It is experimented for inspecting confidence rate of heat strain. Based on these results, necessary design specifications for heat-resisting design have been produced.

Significant amount of bottom ash has been produced in the power plant located at southeast region of Korea, but those were abandoned in the pond site without any treatment. In these days, there is a strong move to enforce environmental regulations to protect surrounding nature, a lot of pressure is given to the power plant industry to remove hazardous chemicals from their waste material before landfill or site storage. The overall objective of this research is to separate hazardous chemicals from the bottom ash, and use it safely as sustainable construction material. In this specific study, magnetic separation of bottom ash was applied, and used as a fine aggregates to make mortar specimens. According to the results, it was found that the use of bottom ash decreased 28-day compressive strength. However, using non-magnetic bottom ash provides best results in terms of thermal conductivity, showing strong possibility to be used as heat insulating material.

Heat transfer phenomena during inward melting and solidification process of the phase change material were studied expertimentally. The phase change medium was 99% pure n-docosane paraffin ($C_{22}H_{46}$). The solid-liquid interface motion during phase change was recorded photographically. Measurements were made on the temperature, the solid-liquid interface, the melted or frozen mass and the various energy components stored or extracted from the cylinder wall. For melting, the experimental results reaffirmed the dominant role played by the conduction at an early stage, by the natural convection at longer time. For solidification, natural convection effects in the superheated liquid were modest and were confined to short freezing time. Although the latent energy is the largest contributor to the total stored or extracted energy, the aggregate sensible energies can make a significant contribution, especially at large cylinder wall superheating or subcooling, large initial phase change material subcooling or superheating.
