Influence of Hot Isostatic Press on Quasi-static and Dynamic Mechanical Properties of SLM-printed Ti-6Al-4V Alloy (SLM 방식으로 적층 제조된 Ti-6Al-4V 합금의 HIP 처리에 따른 준정적 및 동적 기계적 특성 변화)

  • Selective laser melting (SLM) is an additive manufacturing process by melting metallic powders and stacking into layers, and can product complex shapes or near-net-shape (NNS) that are difficult to product by conventional processes. Also, SLM process is able to raise the efficiency of production by creating a streamlined manufacturing process. For manufacturing in SLM process using Ti-6Al-4V powder, analysis of microstructural evolution and evaluation of mechanical properties are essential because of rapid melting and solidification process of powders according to high laser power and rapid scan speed. In addition, it requires a post-processing because the soundness and mechanical properties are degraded by defects such as pore, un-melted powder, lack-of-fusion, etc. In this study, hot isostatic press (HIP) was conducted as a post-processing on SLM-printed Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Microstructure of post-processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy was compared to as-built Ti-6Al-4V, and the evolution of quasi-static (Vickers hardness, room temperature tensile characteristic) and dynamic (high-cycle fatigue characteristic) mechanical properties were analyzed.

The Effct of SHS Reaction Heat Control on the Microstructure of TiAl (고온 자전 합성시 반응열 제어가 TiAl 미세 조직에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • TiAi intermetallic compound has been extensively studied for possible high temperature structural applications because of its high specific strength at high temperature, high creep resistance, and good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. In addition to its good properties, an economic manufacturing routes should be developed for this material to be used more extensively. One of the promising route in manufacturing TiAl intermetallics is the Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) method. Thus in this study, an attempt was made to study the mechanism of the SHS process in TiAl synthesis. The composition of the sample was Ti-(45, 50, 53)at% Al and the microstuctures of the products were analyzed using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. When the phases formed at the main SHS reaction of whicyh combustion temperature is higher than the melting temperature of aluminum were identified as TiAl and Ti$_3$Al ; Ti$_3$Al cores surrounded by TiAl phase. In order to increase the combustion temperature, carbon was added 5 and 10at.%. When the carbon content was 10at.%, the heat of the reaction was large enough to melt the phase formed and that is consistent with the theoretical calculation results of the adiabatic temperature. The combution temperatue, which was measured by a computer data acquisition system, increased with the carbon content. The phases formed from the reaction involving the carbon added were indentified as TiAl and Ti$_2$AlC using XRD. The vickers hardness of the reaction product increased with the carbon content.

Evaluation of the Smoke Characteristics of Some Plastics in an Enclosed Compartment (밀폐된 구획 내 일부 플라스틱류의 연기 특성 평가)

  • The smoke properties of some plastics were investigated, including polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polycarbonate (PC), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyacetal. For smoke density, related values of static smoke characteristics were measured using a smoke density tester according to ISO 5659-2. In addition, combustion with and without flame was measured independently. Under the condition of radiant heat of 50 kW/m2 using the flame method, the measured value of the maximum specific optical density (Dm) of smoke showed the lowest value for PMMA (401.26) and the highest value for PVC (1345.04). In addition, PMMA (262.82) was the lowest and PVC (1385.43) was the highest in the measured Dm of smoke under the condition of radiant heat of 50 kW/m2 in the non-flame method. Smoke generation during combustion of the object is significantly affected by the radiant heat flux, and carbonizable plastics showed a higher amount of smoke than non-carbonizable plastics during combustion. Polymers with aromatic groups in the main polymer chain generated a large amount of smoke because a large amount of char was generated due to thermal decomposition.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate thermal shock resistance and thermal shock fracture toughness for ATJ graphite. Thermal shock resistance and thermal shock fracture toughness of ATJ graphite are evaluated by using CO$_2$ laser irradiation technique. The laser heat source is irradiated at the center of specimens. Temperature distribution on the specimen surface is measured using the thermocouples of type K and C. SEM and radiographic images are used to observe the cracks which are formed at the thermal shock specimens.

  • The encapsulated induction melting and hot pressing were employed to prepare Fe-doped $CoSb_3$ skutterudites and their thermoelectric properties were investigated. Single phase $\delta-CoSb_3$ was successfully obtained by the subsequent heat treatment at 773K for 24 hours. Iron atoms acted as electron acceptors by substituting cobalt atoms. Thermoelectric properties were remarkably improved by the appropriate doping. $Co_{0.7}Fe_{0.3}Sb_3$ was found as an optimum composition for best thermoelectric properties in this work.

  • Noncatalytic partial oxidation of methane for producing synthesis gas was studied in a lab-scale experimental apparatus. Partial oxidation developed for high-temperature, fuel-rich combustion and it is exothermic process. but Steam reforming and Caron reforming is highly endothermic process to need much energy. Noncatalytic partial oxidation of methane is affected by temperature and equivalent ratio, so we studied effect about composition of synthesis gas at lab scale reactor. We used electronic heater to control the temperature of reactor. The quality of synthesis gas is improved and reduced heat value to require at Noncatalytic partial oxidation because the reacting temperature is lower at oxy condition.

Surface Characterization of Hydrophobically Modified MCC Using Inverse Gas Chromatography (인버스 가스 크로마토 그래피를 이용한 소수화된 MCC의 표면 특성 분석)

  • The adsorption characteristics and surface energetics of hydrophobically modified MCC have been investigated by the inverse gas chromatography technique at infinite dilution. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption, ΔG, ΔH and ΔS, for n-alkanes were determined at infinite dilution. Heats of adsoption of the n-alkanes increased as the level of hydrophobic modification increased. The hydrophobically modified MCC also showed greater entropy of adsorption indicating restricted mobility of the adsorbed n-alkanes. The acid/base characteristics of the MCC were evaluated using polar probes. As the hydrophobicity of MCC increased, the basisity of the MCC decreased.

  • Fluid flow and structural analyses of an electronic expansion valve (EEV) using CO2 as a working refrigerant are carried out to estimate the mass flow rate and maximum stress. An engineering sample EEV that the orifice diameter is 1.8 mm was fabricated. The mass flow rates were measured at various EEV inlet temperatures and pressures for several EEV openings using experimental heat pump system. The sample EEV has over 35 MPa burst pressure and the maximum mass flow rate of CO2 through the EEV increased to 100 g/s at full opening condition.

Flexible Thermoelectric Device Using Thick Films for Energy Harvesting from the Human Body

  • A flexible thermoelectric device using body heat has drawn attention as a power source for wearable devices. In this study, thermoelectric thick films were fabricated by cold pressing method using p-type antimony telluride and n-type bismuth telluride powders in accordance with specific loads. Thermoelectric thick films were denser and improved the electrical and thermoelectric properties while increasing the load of the cold pressing. The thickness of the specimen can be controlled by the amount of material; specimens were approximately 700 um in thickness. Flexible thermoelectric devices were manufactured by using the thermoelectric thick films on PI (Polyimide) substrate. The process is cheap, efficient, easy and scalable. Evaluation of power generation performance and flexibility on the fabricated flexible thermoelectric device was carried out. The flexible thermoelectric device has great flexibility and good performance and can be applied to wearable electronics as a power source.
