  • A flywheel-driven rapid compression and expansion machine is developed and utilized for experimental study of homogeneous charge compression ignition combustion. Compression ignition of homogeneous charge in IC engines offers possibilities of realizing ultra-lean engine operation with greatly reduced NOx and particulate formation. Fundamental investigations are carried out in order to better understand this ideal engine combustion mechanism. Perfectly premixed propane-air mixtures of various equivalence ratio are compression-ignited in the rapid compression and expansion machine, and the characteristics of the auto-ignition and the following combustion process are analyzed.

  • Combustion instability is a serious obstacle for the lean premixed combustion of gas turbines, and can even cause fatal damage to the combustor and the entire system. Thus, improved understanding of the mechanisms of combustion instability is necessary for designing and operating gas turbine combustors. In this study, in order to understand the instability phenomena, an experimental study was conducted in a rearwardstep dump combustor with LPG and air. The fluctuations of pressure and heat release were measured by piezoelectric pressure sensor and High speed Intensified Charge Coupled Device (ICCD) camera respectively. Various types of combustion modes occurred in accordance with the equivalence ratio and the fuel supplying conditions. The unmixedness of the fuel and air can be controlled by changing the mixing distance ($L_{fuel}$). It is found that the unmixedness of the fuel and air affects the characteristics of flame behavior and pressure fluctuations in a lean premixed flame.

  • This paper is concerned with the Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine as a new concept in engines and a power source for future automotive applications. Essentially a combination of spark ignition and compression ignition engines, the HCCI engine exhibits low NOx and Particulate Matter (PM) emissions as well as high efficiency under part load. The objective of this research is to determine the effects of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) rate on the combustion processes of HCCI. For this purpose, a 4-cylinder, compression ignition engine was converted into a HCCI engine, and a heating device was installed to raise the temperature of the intake air and also to make it more consistent. In addition, a pressure sensor was inserted into each of the cylinders to investigate the differences in characteristics among the cylinders.

  • A comprehensive DES quality numerical analysis has been carried out for reacting flows in constant-area and divergent scramjet combustor configuration with and without a cavity. Transverse injection of hydrogen is considered over a broad range of injection pressure. The corresponding equivalence ratio of the overall fuel-air mixture ranges from 0.167 to 0.50. The work features detailed resolution of the flow and flame dynamics in the combustor, which was not typically available in most of the pervious studies. Much of the flow unsteadiness is related not only the cavity, but also to the intrinsic unsteadiness in the flowfield. The interactions between the unsteady flow and flame evolution may cause a large excursion of flow oscillation. The roles of the cavity, injection pressure, and heat release in determining the flow dynamics are examined systematically.

  • Semi-solid forging can be applied in industry only with enough knowledge of the effects of the forming parameters related with the process and their exact control which can be obtained by empirical or numerical methods. In the current study, the effects of process variables on semi-solid forging are discussed based on mainly numerical results. Die preheating temperature, initial solid fraction of the workpiece, and die velocity were selected as process variables, and numerical analyses using a rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element approach that considered the release of latent heat due to phase change were carried out. In the analyses, a proposed flow stress material characterization and a solid fraction updating algorithm were employed. The obtained results from numerical analysis are discussed and are compared with some experimental observations.

  • In this study, A controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine is considered, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. The fuel is injected indirectly into electrically heated inlet air flow. Investigated are the engine performance characteristics under the wide range of operating conditions such as 32 to 63 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, and 150 to $180^{\circ}C$ in the inlet-air temperature. A controlled auto-ignition gasoline engine which has the super ultra lean-burn with self-ignition of gasoline fuel can be achieved by heating inlet air.

  • Repair and strengthening is necessary to extend the service life of existing buildings. Polymer-modified cement mortar (PCM) has been extensively used as a high performance material particularly for finishing and repairing works in concrete building because of itsexcellent adhesion, waterproofing, resistance to chemical attack, and workability. As PCM contains organic polymer, it is necessary to clarify its properties at high temperature under fire, on which sufficient data are not available. This paper evaluated the burn-up characteristics of polymer-modified cement mortar with cone calorimeter test, non-combustibility test and flammability test with experimental parameters such as the types of polymer, unit-polymer content, polymer-cement ratio and thickness of the specimen.

  • The major purpose of this study is to find the optimized split injection quantities and dwell angles for PM reduction without increasing NOx. The tests were performed on a Common-Rail DI Diesel Engine to obtain optimum injection timing and duration. In this study, total injection quantities were divided into the ratio of 25-75%, 50-50% and 75-25%. NOx and PM were measured on the condition of the same bsfc by increasing dwell angles. It was found that the split injection reduced NOx with dwell angle increase. For 50_50, 75_25% split injection cases, PM was reduced with 10 to 12(CAD) dwell angles. For 25_75% split injection 33% PM reduction was achieved with 8 to 12(CAD) dwell angles.

  • The interaction between methane and hydrogen premixed flames with the different equivalence ratio and global strain rate was investigated numerically in one-dimensional counterflow field. The OPPDIF code and GRI-v3.0 were used to simulate the interacting flames. Overall trends in the maximum heat release rates of $CH_4{^-}$ and $H_2$-side flame were examined with the variation of $a_g$. The interaction mode of the flames were classified according to the equivalence ratios and Lewis numbers of each flame and global strain rate.

  • A homogeneous premixed charge compression ignition engine has been experimentally studied far the reduction exhaust emissions of diesel engines. In this study, the gasoline fuel is injected into the intake manifold to from homogeneous pre-mixture in the combustion chamber and then this pre-mixture is ignited by small amount of diesel fuel directly injected into the cylinder. In the premixed charge compression ignition engine, NOx and smoke concentration of the exhaust emissions were reduced simultaneously as compared with the conventional diesel engine. The combustion characteristics of premixed charged diesel engine such as the power output, the rate of heat release, and the other characteristics are discussed.
