Most of solar system dissemination has been focused on domestic hot water system of which utilization to a building is relatively simple and safe than solar heating system. Through the survey on a cause of solar house dissemination failure in Korea, we conclude that design integration and systematic approach method for technology application are the most important element for a successful solar house. KIER(Korea Institute of Energy Research) and Hanbat National University have started new project on a development of Zero energy Solar House, called ZeSH which can be sustained just by natural energy without the support of existing fossil fuel. This is the 1st phase research of 10 years long-term ZeSH plan which develops a low-cost and $100\%$ self sufficient ZeSH. The goal of 1st phase ZeSH research is to get a $70\%$ self sufficiency only in thermal loads. Actual demonstration house, named KIER ZeSH I was designed and constructed as a result of 1st phase research work in the end of 2002. Various innovative technologies such as super insulation, high performance window, passive and active solar systems, ventilation heat recovery system are applied and evaluated to the KIER ZeSH I. A lot of computer simulations had been conducted for the optimal design and system integration in every design steps. Considering all the results from detailed hourly computer simulation, it is expected that at least $70\%$ self-sufficiency in thermal loads which is 1st phase target value can be excessively achieved in actual demonstration house. Besides, many valuable findings from the design and analysis to construction could be established such as collaboration method among the participants, practical design and construction techniques for system integration and the others. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the main findings through the development of KIER ZeSH I project. Practical guidelines in every design step for new low- or zero- energy solar house is proposed as result.
The TANDEM project is a European initiative funded under the EURATOM program. The project started on September 2022 and has a duration of 36 months. TANDEM stands for Small Modular ReacTor for a European sAfe aNd Decarbonized Energy Mix. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) can be hybridized with other energy sources, storage systems and energy conversion applications to provide electricity, heat and hydrogen. Hybrid energy systems have the potential to strongly contribute to the energy decarbonization targeting carbon-neutrality in Europe by 2050. However, the integration of nuclear reactors, particularly SMRs, in hybrid energy systems, is a new R&D topic to be investigated. In this context, the TANDEM project aims to develop assessments and tools to facilitate the safe and efficient integration of SMRs into low-carbon hybrid energy systems. An open-source "TANDEM" model library of hybrid system components will be developed in Modelica language which, by coupling, will extend the capabilities of existing tools implemented in the project. The project proposes to specifically address the safety issues of SMRs related to their integration into hybrid energy systems, involving specific interactions between SMRs and the rest of the hybrid systems; new initiating events may have to be considered in the safety approach. TANDEM will study two hybrid systems covering the main trends of the European energy policy and market evolution at 2035's horizon: a district heating network and power supply in a large urban area, and an energy hub serving energy conversion systems, including hydrogen production; the energy hub is inspired from a harbor-like infrastructure. TANDEM will provide assessments on SMR safety, hybrid system operationality and techno-economics. Societal considerations will also be encased by analyzing European citizen engagement in SMR technology safety.
The Quantitative estimations of the stratification - destratification(SD) phenomena in Deukryang Bay, Korea have been carried out based on the data of wind speed, heat flux through the sea surface and tidal current amplitude. To find out the main factors causing SD, wv introduce the rate of energy balance of the surface heat flux, tidal and wind stirring proposed by Simpson and Hunter(1974). The calculated potential energy of three terms are compared, from which the energy of wind stirring effect was one order smaller than the heat flux and the tidal stirring. Using the results, we complement time integration of the potential energy with the several s values of 0.010~0.014 at interval 0.001 and with wind speeds of 1.5 and 2.0 times larger than observation values at land. It shows that the variation of SD phenomena in the bay mainly depended on tidal stirring and sea surface heating in summer if there is no exceptionally strong wind event like Typhoon. The stratification become to be foamed from about 5 July although the stratification a little decreases during the second spring tidal period of middle of July.

The membrane separation processes have received attention due to advantages such as compactness, modularity, ease of installation, flexibility of operation, lower capital cost and lower energy consumption. In this study, we evaluated accuracy of cross-flow, co-current and counter-current models. With the most accurate model, we identified the operating conditions of the two-stage membrane separation and examined the effects of permeance and selectivity of the membrane by simulation. Futhermore, power requirements and operating cost savings due to the introduction of the heat exchanger were investigated by applying heat exchanger network synthesis technique in the two-stage membrane separation using vapor sweep.
Ground-coupled heat pump system has attracted attention as a promising renewable energy technology due to its improving energy efficiency and eco-friendly mechanism for space cooling and heating. Pipes buried in the ground play a role of direct thermal interaction between circulating fluid inside the pipe and surrounding soils in the geothermal exchange system. However, both complexities of turbulent flow coupling thermal-hydraulic phenomena and very long aspect ratio of the pipe make it difficult to model the heat exchange system directly. Energy balance for fluid flow inside the pipe was derived to model thermal-hydraulic phenomena, and one-dimensional pipe element was proposed through Galerkin formation and time integration of the equation. Developed element is combined to pre-developed FEM code for THM phenomena in porous media. Numerical results of Thermal Response Test showed that line-source model overestimates equivalent thermal conductivity of surrounding soils due to thermal interaction between adjacent pipes and finite length of the pipe. Thus, inverse analysis for the TRT simulation was conducted to present optimal transformation matrix with utmost convergence.

This study presents an initial design for a novel system consisting in a coupled nuclear reactor and a phase change material-based thermal energy storage (TES) component, which acts as a buffer and regulator of heat transfer between the primary and secondary loops. The goal of this concept is to enhance the capacity factor of nuclear power plants (NPPs) in the case of high integration of renewable energy sources into the electric grid. Hence, this system could support in elevating the economics of NPPs in current competitive markets, especially with subsidized solar and wind energy sources, and relatively low oil and gas prices. Furthermore, utilizing a prismatic-core advanced high temperature reactor (PAHTR) cooled by a molten salt with a high melting point, have the potential in increasing the system efficiency due to its high operating temperature, and providing the baseline requirements for coupling other process heat applications. The present research studies the neutronics and thermal hydraulics (TH) of the PAHTR as well as TH calculations for the TES which consists of 300 blocks with a total heat storage capacity of 150 MWd. SERPENT Monte Carlo and MCNP5 codes carried out the neutronics analysis of the PAHTR which is sized to have a 5-year refueling cycle and rated power of 300 MWth. The PAHTR has 10 metric tons of heavy metal with 19.75 wt% enriched UO2 TRISO fuel, a hot clean excess reactivity and shutdown margin of $33.70 and -$115.68; respectively, negative temperature feedback coefficients, and an axial flux peaking factor of 1.68. Star-CCM + code predicted the correct convective heat transfer coefficient variations for both the reactor and the storage. TH analysis results show that the flow in the primary loop (in the reactor and TES) remains in the developing mixed convection regime while it reaches a fully developed flow in the secondary loop.
Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) is the emerging personal transport vehicle operating on the loop automatically. The PRT system utilize the electrical power from super capacity or battery, it is important to manage the power or energy. In this regards, the management of high temperature occurred by the operation of system is significantly important to prevent from serious damage of component. In this study, we studied the adequate shape of underbody which can reduce the heat accumulation by pickup coil and condenser using natural air cooling. We suggested the additional air pathway, air inlet and flow separator to decrease the temperature of the heat source components. It was found that suggested system can decrease the temperature of PRT under body by 16% during the static mode and by 10% during the running mode at 30km/h. It is expected that the findings of this study will feed into final design of newly built Korean PRT vehicle.
With the development of modern microelectronics technologies, the power density of electronic devices is rapidly increasing, due to the miniaturization or integration of device elements which operate at high frequency, high power conditions. Resulting thermal problems are known to cause power leakage, device failure and deteriorated performance. To relieve heat accumulation at the interface between chips and heat sinks, thermal interface materials (TIMs) must provide efficient heat transport in the through-plane direction. We report on the enhanced thermal conduction of $Al_2O_3-based$ polymer composites, fabricated by the surface wetting and texturing of thermally conductive hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN) nanoplatelets with large anisotropy in morphology and physical properties. The thermally conductive polymer composites were prepared with hybrid fillers of $Al_2O_3$ macro beads and surface modified h-BN nanoplatelets. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has high thermal conductivity and is one of the most suitable materials for thermally conductive polymer composites, which protect electronic devices by efficient heat dissipation. In this study, we synthesized hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles by the pyrolysis of cost effective precursors, boric acid and melamine. Through pyrolysis at $900^{\circ}C$ and subsequent annealing at $1500^{\circ}C$, hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles with diameters of ca. 50nm were synthesized. We demonstrate that the addition of a small amount of calcium fluoride ($CaF_2$) during the preparation of the melamine borate adduct significantly enhanced the crystallinity of the h-BN and assisted the growth of nanoplatelets up to 100nm in diameters. The addition of a small amount of h-BN enhanced the thermal conductivity of the $Al_2O_3-based$ polymer composites, from 1.45W/mK to 2.33 W/mK.
The issue of quench is related to safety operation of large-scale superconducting magnet system fabricated by cable-in-conduit conductor. A numerical method is presented to simulate the thermal hydraulic quench characteristics in the superconducting Tokamak magnet system, One-dimensional fluid dynamic equations for supercritical helium and the equation of heat conduction for the conduit are used to describe the thermal hydraulic characteristics in the cable-in-conduit conductor. The high heat transfer approximation between supercritical helium and superconducting strands is taken into account due to strong heating induced flow of supercritical helium. The fully implicit time integration of upwind scheme for finite volume method is utilized to discretize the equations on the staggered mesh. The scheme of a new adaptive mesh is proposed for the moving boundary problem and the time term is discretized by the-implicit scheme. It remarkably reduces the CPU time by local linearization of coefficient and the compressible storage of the large sparse matrix of discretized equations. The discretized equations are solved by the IMSL. The numerical implement is discussed in detail. The validation of this method is demonstrated by comparison of the numerical results with those of the SARUMAN and the QUENCHER and experimental measurements.

The flowfield of hypersonic shock-shock interaction has been simulated using a two-dimensional Navier-Stokes code based on AUSMPW+ scheme. AUSMPW+ scheme is a new hybrid flux splitting scheme, which is improved by introducing pressure-based weight functions to eliminate the typical drawbacks of AUSM-type schemes, such as non-monotone pressure solutions. To study the real gas effects, three different gas models are taken into account in the present paper: perfect gas, equilibrium flow and non equilibrium flow. It has been investigated how each gas model influences on the peak surface loading, such as wall pressure and wall heat transfer, and unsteady structure of flowfield in the region of shock-shock interaction. With the results, the value of peak pressure is not sensitive to the real gas effects nor to the wall catalyticity. However, the value of peak heat transfer rates is affected by the real gas effects and the wall catalyticity. Also, the structure of the flowfield changes drastically in the presence of real gas effects.
