A study to Improve the safety of the ceramic heat exchanger In the high temperature heat recovery system was performed in terms of air flow passes. The numerical and finite element analyses on the heat transfer and thermal stresses in the ceramic core related with air passes were carried out. The results showed that the stresses in the ceramic core induced by the thermal expansion are large enough to cause failure of the brittle ceramic core. The imployment of triple-pass air flow for the same ceramic core could increase the efficiency and effectively release approximately 20% of the maximum thermal stressess, thus improving the safety of the ceramic heat exchanger. The use of triple-pass, however, is limited by the amount of air flow due to the increase of pressure drop.
The purpose of this study was to investigate an innovative hydroforming process for the cost-effective manufacturing of double layered tube with circumferentially corrugated patterns. Conventional double pipe heat exchanger has relatively poor heat transfer efficiency because of the limited contact area resulting from the concentrically arranged simple cylindrical structure. As a promising alternative to enhance heat transfer efficiency, double layered tube with corrugated internal pattern was considered in this study. To fabricate corrugated inner tube, innovative tube hydroforming system was developed. The customized loading paths were established using the simulated forming pressure and contracting stroke at various bar diameters. Experimentally obtained cross-sectional profiles were analyzed to evaluate the reliability and applicability of the hydroformed tube with various patterns. The results demonstrate that the proposed hydroforming process can be a feasible alternative for manufacturing high-performance double-tube heat exchangers.

The shell and tube heat exchanger is an essential part of a power plant for recovering transfer heat between the feed water of a boiler and the wasted heat. The baffles are also an important element inside the heat exchanger. Internal materials influence the flow pattern in the bed. The influence of baffles in the velocity profiles was observed using a three-dimensional PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) around baffles in a horizontal circular tube. The velocity of the particles was measured before the baffle and between them in the test tube. Results show that the velocity vectors near the front baffle flow along the vertical wall, and then concentrate on the upper opening of the front baffle. The velocity profiles circulate in the front and rear baffle. These profiles are related to the Reynolds number (Re) or the flow intensity. Velocity profiles at lower Re number showed complicated mixing to obtain the velocities and concentrate on the lower opening of the rear baffle as front wall. Numerical simulations were performed to investigate the effects of the baffle and obtain the velocity profiles between the two baffles. In this study, a commercial CFD package, Fluent 6.3.21 with the turbulent flow modeling, k-${\epsilon}$ are adopted. The path line and local axial velocities are calculated between two baffles using this program.

Hair pin bending machine is pipe forming machine consisting of heat exchanger product system. Hair pin produced by these machine is pathway of refrigerant and play a important role improving the performance and productivity of heat exchanger. The core technology of hair pin bending machine is forming the straight pipe into U-type without any defaults. Therefore, this paper study the relation between the pipe bending forming and the shape and position of mandrel using the elastic-plastic finite element analysis and provide a foundation technology for which developing the hair pin bending machine. The results are followed 1. Mandrel located in front of rotating center of bending die minimized the circular shape variation of copper pipe. 2. Diameter change of mandrel hardly effect the pipe shape.
Application of heat recovery system applying air supply and cexhaust ventilation device essential in energy management system for the optimum ventilation system utilization and energy saving. This is a key element of infrastructure technology for high-efficiency energy buildings, because it can save heating and cooling energy in winter and summer. In this paper, heat transfer efficiency was simulated using paper, plastic, and aluminum materials that was examined to compare heat exchanger performance under uniform flow conditions. We tested heat transfer efficiengy according to the shape of two of that, one is orthogonal and the other is refraction shape. Based on the simulation results, it is expected to contribute to the production of high performance heat exchanger with heat transfer performance and pressure loss.

The objective of this study is to predict the structural characteristics of a heat exchanger mounted on an aircraft engine using finite element analysis. The plastic fracture and life of the heat exchanger were estimated by a thermo-mechanical analysis. Tensile tests were conducted under high temperature conditions (700, 800, 900, 1000 K) using five specimens to obtain the mechanical properties of the Inconel 625 tubes. To assess the structural characteristics of the heat exchanger, the full and partial models were applied under the operating conditions given by the thermo-mechanical and inertial load. As a result, the case, tubesheet, flange, and mounting components have a reasonable safety margin to the allowable stress assuming a fatigue strength of Inconel 625 of 10000 cycles under 1000 K.

This paper presents a design method for the horizontal straight ground heat exchanger (GHE) based on the Kavanaugh design method. In order to examine suitability of the suggested design method, a horizontal line type GHE was installed in a steel box of which the size was $5m{\times}1m{\times}1m$ filled with dried Joomunjin standard, and a thermal response test (TRT) was conducted for 21 hours. A numerical analysis was performed for a simulation of a peak month operation and for its verification by finite element method (FEM). According to the simulation results, it was concluded that the suggested design method for a horizontal straight GHE is reliable for the estimation of a design length.
A combined Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin method (SUPG) and segregated finite element algorithm for solving conjugate heat transfer problems where heat conduction in a solid is coupled with heat convection in viscous fluid flow is presented. The Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin method is used for the analysis of viscous thermal flow in the fluid region, while the analysis of heat conduction in solid region is performed by the Galerkin method. The method uses the three-node triangular element with equal-order interpolation functions for all the variables of the velocity components, the pressure and the temperature. The main advantage of the presented method is to consistently couple heat transfer along the fluid-solid interface. Four test cases, which are the conjugate Couette flow problem in parallel plate channel, the counter-flow in heat exchanger, the conjugate natural convection in a square cavity with a conducting wall, and the conjugate natural convection and conduction from heated cylinder in square cavity, are selected to evaluate efficiency of the presented method.

A numerical simulation has been carried out for the automotive air conditioning system. The purpose of this simulation is to present the methods for simulating car air conditioning components, systems and cool-down performance by computerized mathematical model and to analyze the performance of A/C system. In analyzing the heat exchanger(evaporator and condenser), the finite volume model which has a merit in predicting the temperature field in detail because it can consider partial variation of thermal property and heat transfer coefficient is used. In analyzing the compressor, the polytropic approach which regards the actual compression process as a reversible polytropic process is employed. In analyzing vehicle passenger compartment, the thermal network is employed to simulate the car cool down process. This A/C system program can be used for analyzing a component performance when a component is alternated or designed and for analyzing the engine cooling system when A/C system is operated.

This paper presents a series of numerical simulations on the thermal performance and sectional efficiency of a closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger (U-loop) equipped in a geothermal heat pump system (GHP). A 2-D finite element analysis, ANSYS, was employed to evaluate the temperature distribution on the borehole cross section involving HDPE pipe/grout/soil formation to compare the sectional efficiency between the conventional U-loop and a new latticed HDPE pipe system which is equipped with a thermally insulating latice in order to reduce thermal interference between the inflow and outflow pipes. In addition, a 3-D finite volume analysis (Fluent) was used to simulate the operating process of the closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger by considering the effect of grout's thermal properties, rate of circulation pump, distance between the inflow and outflow pipes, and the effectiveness of the latticed HDPE pipe system. It was observed that the thermal interference between the two strands of U-loop is of importance in determining the efficiency of the ground heat exchanger, and thus it is highly recommendable to modify the cross section configuration of the conventional U-loop system by including a thermally insulating latice between the two strands.
