  • While the method of prioritization has been practicing in the community needs-based programs to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of community health planning, it has not been systematically used. This study aims to suggest more sophisticated method of prioritizing. Based on the analysis of 81 community health plans which adopt prioritizing method, this study tried to examine their methods and criteria and evaluate their adequacy. In the prioritization process, projects themselves, rather than health problems, were commonly adopted for the subject of the analysis. The most used was the Basic priority rating, followed by the Prioritization matrix. Looking at the size of health problem among the prioritization criteria, the prevalence for chronic diseases and the proportion of people with health problems for health behaviors, mainly were used as indicators. Along with the size of health problem, other factors such as the degree of seriousness of health problem, and the effectiveness of intervention have been used as the criteria of prioritizing, not fully supported by objective data base and the clear standard of scoring. In the prioritization, the analysis need to be limited only to health problems, and the scoring criteria for each health problem area be presented.

  • Objectives: There is an increasing number of North Korean adolescents in South Korea. These adolescents need clinical attention as they experience a high risk of suicidal behavior because of the childhood adversity and acculturative challenges that they face before and after arriving in South Korea. This study assessed the risk of suicide attempts among North Korean adolescents compared to South Korean adolescents, and investigated the contributing factors for each group. Methods: We used data from the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey (KYRBS) spanning 2011 to 2018, in which 404 adolescents had a father and/or mother who was a North Korean native. Data on 1,212 propensity-matched South Korean adolescents were extracted from the 2011 to 2018 KYRBS. Prevalence was calculated and compared by group. Separate odds ratios were calculated by group. Results: The North Korean group had a significantly higher suicide attempt rate [unadjusted odds ratio (OR)=8.27; adjusted OR=8.45]. Multivariate analysis indicated that having a low or high socioeconomic status and depressive symptoms were significantly associated with suicide attempts in North Korean adolescents, while being female, having a high socioeconomic status, alcohol use, and depressive symptoms were significantly related to suicide attempts in South Korean adolescents. Conclusion: The results found similarities and differences in the factors associated with the likelihood of suicide attempts in the two groups. From these results, different approaches are needed when planning interventions for each group.

  • Background: The industrial revolution that took place in the United Kingdom (UK) between 1760 and 1830 led to profound social change. Occupational medicine was concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of occupational diseases, that is, diseases directly caused by exposure to workplace hazards. A similar pattern of development has occurred globally. Methods: A review of relevant literature. Results: The international conceptualization and development of occupational health occurred during the 20th century. A new paradigm for occupational health has emerged that extends the classical focus on what might be termed "health risk management" that is, the focus on workplace hazards and risk to health to include the medical aspects of sickness absence and rehabilitation, the support and management of chronic noncommunicable diseases, and workplace health promotion. Conclusion: The future strategic direction for occupational health will be informed by a needs analysis and a consideration of where it should be positioned within future healthcare provision. What are the occupational health workforce implications of the vision for occupational health provision? New challenges and new ways of working will necessitate a review of the competence and capacity of the occupational health workforce, with implications for future workforce planning.

This study also investigated the influence of the perceived educational environment on future career planning among nursing students. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was used, with a structured interview questionnaire that included demographic characteristics, a section that measured students' attitudes and knowledge toward their career planning, and the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure Scale (DREEM). Results: The mean total score for the DREEM scale was 109.61, and most students perceived many areas within the program as more positive than negative. However, they had low levels of knowledge regarding career planning. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, further efforts should be made to stimulate students' interest in pediatric nursing, to integrate theoretical content with practice, and to improve their planning activities early during their study. It is important to engage students in discussions concerning their ideas and worries about factors they perceive as less enhancing and more threatening in clinical settings.

  • An examination of avalable data relevant to several problems in the Korean family planning program led us to the following conclusions: 1. The high incidence of discontinuance in the use of IUD appears to be one of the foremost problems which effectiveness of the family planning program in Korea. Thus, the development of technologies and program strategies to decrease the discontinuance rate is badly needed to increase effectiveness and efficiency of the program. 2. The monthly supply of oral pill was found inadequate in terms of timing at the end and beginning of the year. 3. The frequency of home visiting showed discrepancy between service statistics and survey result. Evidences indicate that the latter figure is more correct. Program strategies should be developed to make home visiting activities more effective. 4. It was observed that the unit cost of the family planning program was increased fairly rapidly. It calls for the necessity of increasing cost efficiency of the program.
