The Differences of Biochemical Status and Dietary Habits according to the Obesity Degree among Obese Elementary School Students in the Gyungbuk Area (경북지역 일부 초등학생의 비만도에 따른 생화학 검사치와 식습관)

  • The prevalence of obesity in children has steadily risen during recent years in developed countries. Child obesity has become a major concern to health providers since it has grown to epidemic proportions over the past few decades. This study was conducted to investigate the biochemical status, dietary habits and life styles according to the obesity degree among obese children residing in the Gyungbuk area. The subjects were 148 elementary school students (boy 103, girl 45) and classified as mildly obese (n = 56), moderately obese (n = 61) and severely obese (n = 31) by the obesity index. The average body weight and height increased significantly according to the obesity degree (p < 0.05, p < 0.001). Serum cholesterol concentration came under the normal level in all groups. Serum AST activity increased according to the obesity degree but it was not significant. Serum ALT activity increased according to the obesity degree (p < 0.05). Dietary habit score was lower significantly according to the obesity degree (p < 0.01). Life style of the subjects was significantly different for the level of 'healthy state (p < 0.05)', 'body perception (p < 0.01)', 'watching TV and video (p < 0.05)', 'normal sleeping hour (p < 0.05)' and 'degree of stress (p < 0.05)' according to the obesity degree. A positive relationship between obesity index and blood pressure, ALT has been shown in the subjects. Obesity index and dietary habit scores were negatively associated. Therefore, these results suggest that a practical nutrition-exercise education program for the prevention of child obesity should be provided to elementary school children. Life Styles and the Blood Cadmium Concentration in Korean Adults (한국 성인에서의 생활행태와 혈중 카드뮴 농도)

  • In this study, we analyzed the blood cadmium concentration in general population of Korea, and followed the analyses the relations with epidemiologic factors, life-style and body iron store. The geometric mean concentration of blood cadmium was 1.20 ${\mu}g/L$ in study subject, the level of blood cadmium was higher in female (1.27 ${\mu}g/L$) than in male (1.11 ${\mu}g/L$). The mean concentration of blood cadmium was the highest in coastal area (1.80 ${\mu}g/L$) and followed in urban (1.01 ${\mu}g/L$) and rural area (0.90 ${\mu}g/L$). The cadmium concentration in whole blood was increased with age-dependent pattern, such as 0.64 ${\mu}g/L$ in the below 30 years, 0.95 ${\mu}g/L$ in the 30~44 years, 1.28 ${\mu}g/L$ in the 45~59 years and 1.31 ${\mu}g/L$ in the over 60 years. The level of blood cadmium was higher in smokers than in non-smokers, but was not significant by alcoholic habit. The blood cadmium level was different from occupations, which was the highest in the fishers as 1.87 ${\mu}g/L$. The inversed relation was observed between blood cadmium and serum Fe, while was correlated positively with the ferritin level. In summary, the environmental exposure to cadmium in Korean is not so much compared to other countries, and the blood cadmium is influenced by genetic factors (age and sex), life-styles (dietary habit, occupation and smoking habit) and nutrition such as serum iron.

A Study on Dietary Attitude of Middle School Students in Kunsan City, Jeonbuk Province (전북 군산지역 중학생의 식생활 태도에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore dietary attitude among middle school students by sex. The subjects were collected from 211 boy students and 198 girl students in the city of Kunsan, Jeonbuk province. The mean age of the subjects was 13.7 years old. The average score of food habit was 4.61 $\pm$ 1.92. The average score of food habit of boy students was higher than the score of girl students. The correlations between the score of food habit and father's education level. family income, and nutritional supplements were positive. The correlation between the scores of the nutrition knowledge and father's education level was also positive. On the other hand the mother's occupation did not have any influence on the scores of food habits and the scores of the nutrition knowledge. As a staple food, cooked rice was preferred on boy and girl students at breakfast(82.7%) and supper(94.3%). The preference of snacks was fruit and fruit juice. The reason of skipping breakfast was the lack of time and no appetite, and skipping lunch was due to no appetite. Lastly the main reason of skipping supper was playing computer on boys. on the other hand no appetite and weight control on girls. In order to improve the nutritional status of the middle school students, they must establish good food habits by eating three regular meals per day and balancing their diet. Also they should be notified that severe weight control is very harmful for health. This study indicate that nutrition education and correct information for body image. balanced diet. regularity of meals and food selection are required for middle school students at both school and home.

Nutritional Status and Dietary Quality by Their Residing Types in College Students (대학생의 거주형태에 따른 영양상태 및 식사의 질 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dietary habit, nutritional condition and quality of everyday meal for college students. The number of the subjects was 102 and they were divided into three groups by their residing types; students living with their parents (n=34), students living in dormitory (n=34) and students living independently off the campus (n=34) Questionnaire, 24hour dietary recall for food intakes, and body composition analysis were used. SPSS program was used for the statistics. In general health matter, the average age for each group of students was $21.2kg/m^2$, $20.9kg/m^2$, and $21.9kg/m^2$ respectively. And heights, weights, muscle mass, body fats and BMI were not significantly different between groups. Results on dietary habit showed that students living with their parents had better meal pattern and regularity for breakfast than other groups. Also, for dietary evaluation, students living with their parents showed better extent of intake of milk than other groups. Evaluation on nutrients intake showed that amount of calcium, vitamin $B_2$, folic acid intake in student living independently off the campus were lower than those of the other groups(P<0.05). And MAR(Mean Adequacy Ratio) was not significantly different between groups, however INQ(Index of Nutritional Quality) and NAR(Nutrient Adequacy Ratio) of calcium were lower in off the campus group than other two groups. In conclusion, students living independently had worse eating habits and showed lower intake of calcium than those living with their parents or living in a dormitory. Therefore nutritional education for improving well-balanced dietary habits and optimal intake of nutrients are required especially for students living independently off the campus.

Dietary Habits of Hazardous Drinkers and Heavy Episodic Drinkers in Partial Area of Gyeonggi (경기 일부지역 알코올사용장애자와 폭음자의 식습관)

  • The purpose of this study is to assess dietary habits of the hazardous drinkers and the heavy episodic drinkers in Korean adults. The respondents consisted of 814 adults (415 male and 399 female) who are 20~69 years of age by random selection in partial area of Gyeonggi. A self-report questionnaire was used to cover questions regarding dietary habits, drinking behavior and physical activity. Total dietary habit scores in hazardous drinker group (63.25) was significantly lower than normal drinker group (68.61) in male respondents (P<0.001). Male hazardous drinker group less eat fruit (P<0.01), eat more processed food (P<0.01) than male normal drinker group. Female hazardous drinker group doesn't eat 3 meals a day than female normal drinker group. Total dietary habit scores in heavy episodic drinker group [occasional heavy episodic drinker (62.76), frequent heavy episodic drinker (63.77)] were significantly lower than abstainer group (69.16) in male respondents (P<0.001). Male heavy episodic drinker group less eat fruit (P<0.01), eats more processed food (P<0.01), salty food (P<0.001), sugary food (P<0.05), animal fat (P<0.01) and eats out often (P<0.01) than male abstainer group. Male heavy episodic drinker group significantly less apply nutrition knowledge to their life (P<0.05) and less exercise everyday-more than 1 hour (P<0.01) than male abstainer group. In drinking behavior index, AUDIT (alcohol use disorder identification test) score was negatively correlated with age (P<0.01). There was a positive correlation between dietary habits and physical activity (P<0.01) but there was negative correlation between dietary habits and AUDIT score (P<0.01). This study highlights that AUDIT score was negatively influenced dietary habits.

Do Obese Children Exhibit Distinguishable Behaviours from Normal Weight Children?-Based on Literature Review (비만어린이와 정상체중 어린이의 행동 특성에 관한 문헌적 고찰)

  • Since obesity has been a crucial issue regarding children's health in Korea, numerous studies have been conducted. However, it is difficult to locate studies that can help researchers and/or medical professionals who want to study behavioral differences between obese and normal weight (non-obese) children. The collected literature about obese childrens behaviors were accumulated by performing 'key word' searches from several web engines: 'obesity' 'children obesity' 'behavior' 'habit' 'eating behavior or habit' 'exercise' 'physical activity' and 'daily behavior'. The information was extracted and the behaviors were reviewed utilizing 30 papers that revealed any differences from normal weight children with at least p .05 level of significance. According to those studies, the obese children tended to skip meals more often as a method of losing weight. They also have an increased appetite, eat larger portions and rarely leave food on their plates. The obese children prefer to eat high fat, high calorie foods and eat faster than their normal weight counterparts. Also, the children usually eat alone and eat at irregular meal times. Beside the behaviors related to the standard three meals a day, obese children have high preferences for snacking. The children reported that with pocket money they usually eat certain types of snacks without parent approval. The children stated that they exercise more on a regular basis. However, when asked about their participation they were not likely to engage actively. Meanwhile, they tend to spend free time doing sedentary activities such as watching TV or playing on the computer. Since these studies used self -reported questionnaires with a small sample, size there may be difficulty in forming a basis about obese children's behaviors. Nevertheless, these findings are in accordance with other studies conducted in local as well as western countries. In conclusion, obese children have different daily behaviors or routines from normal weight children. It is recommended that altering these behavioral patterns to match those of normal weight children should be encouraged.

A Study on the Effects of the Reduction of Working Hours on Female Workers' Fatigue (근로시간 단축이 여성근로자의 피로도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This present study has been conducted on female workers' shorter working hours in order to look into their fatigue level and the correlation between fatigue and working hours. Method: We surveyed 237 respondents using a questionnaire from June 1st to June 20th, 2005. Results: The means of total fatigue complaint was 3.45. The fatigue level was significantly higher in the lower age group, unmarried group, manager group and shorter working duration group. And the fatigue level was significantly correlated to working hours and work intensity. In the results of stepwise multiple regression, factors affecting the fatigue level were the change of work intensity, age, regular diet habit, working hours and the type of occupation. Conclusion: It is necessary to prepare the health promotion programs, which can reduce female workers' fatigue level and relieve the intensity of their works.

Dokha: An Emerging Public Health Issue as a Form of Tobacco Smoking in the Middle East

  • Background: Tobacco use is one of the leading causes of preventable death across the world today and the smoking rates among men in the Arab world are amongst the highest in the world. Smoking of dokha, a traditional Arab tobacco is common in some of the Middle East countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Iran. This review focuses on the prevalence, pattern and health effects of dokha use in the Middle East. For this purpose an electronic search was performed in the following databases and websites: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Proquest and Google scholar up to December 2012. The search strategy was based on Internet search for the synonyms of dohka or midwakh. From the results of the review it emerged that younger people are the most common users of dokha. Hence effective outreach health education programs, targeting adolescents, especially school students before they take up the habit of smoking, may thus curb the emergence of the problem.

A Computerized Study for Nutritional Management of Korean (한국인의 영양관리를 위한 전산화 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to achieve a desriable nutritional condition and eating habit of Korean through nutritional counseling. For this purpose, the survey of actual nutritional condition of young woman was carried out and the results were being applied to the nutritional status assessment program and the menu planning program which were being developed on this study. Computerized programs developed for this study were as follows ; 1) Program for the assessment of nutrition status was made by the analysis of general status, obesity measure, eating habits, athletic status, activity expenditure energy, distribution and nutrients of food intake.

The Living Conditions and their Determinants of the Elderly in Inchon (인천시 노인의 생활특성과 관련요인 분석)

  • The purposes of the study were to investingate selected living conditions of the elderly I Inchon and to examine if they can be disaggregated according to their socio-demographic characteristics in terms of living conditions. Four living areas were examined in the study : health and food habit, housing, economic status, and family relationships. Data were collected by questionaires. The sample consisted of 202 elderly. It was found in general that the living conditions were relatively poor for the elderly who were female, older and less educated, and had higher household income and no spouse.
