  • Pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment are trace contaminants of growing importance in environmental health due to their physiologically active nature. Pharmaceuticals could affect non-target species and might eventually damage sustainability of susceptible populations in the ecosystem. Potentials for health consequences among susceptible human population cannot be ruled out since long-term exposure to cocktails of pharmaceuticals, which might be present in drinking water, is possible. Selection of antibiotic resistant microorganisms is of another concern. In order to understand, and if needed, to properly address the environmental health issues of pharmaceutical residues, knowledge gaps need to be filled. Knowledge gaps exist in many important areas such as prioritization of target pharmaceuticals for further risk studies, occurrence patterns in different environments, chronic toxicities, and toxicities of pharmaceutical mixtures. Appropriate treatment technologies for drinking water and wastewater could be developed when they are deemed necessary. One of the simplest, yet most efficient measures that could be undertaken is to implement a return program for unused or expired drugs. In addition, implementation of environmental risk assessment frameworks for pharmaceuticals would make it possible to efficiently manage potential environmental health problems associated with pharmaceutical residues in the environment.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate fatigue, depression and sleep in young adult and middle-aged. Method: The convenient sample consisted of 415 subjects from 20 to 59 years old. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire from July to October, 2001. The V AS-F and CES-D were utilized to measure the level of fatigue and depression. Sleep duration and sleep satisfaction were measured based on the subject's self-report. Result: The result of the study revealed that the level of fatigue and depression was higher among young adult than middle-aged. Considering age and gender, the level of fatigue and depression was higher among young adult women and middle-aged men. Depression and sleep satisfaction influenced on the fatigue. Conclusion: Health care providers need to concern about fatigue and depression in young adult women and middle-aged men. Especially, more concern and intervention programs are needed for young adult women and middle-aged men.

  • Objective : Every language has twofold aspects in meaning of characters such as 'lead' means guide as a verb and 'lead' means one of metals. Chinese character has several meanings because it is phonogram, even if those are exactly same in shapes. we have concern how different meaning of the character 'Si(死)' is in traditional medical classics. Method : we try to find out the meaning of 'Si' excluding meaning of 'Si', 'death' in "Huangdineijing". Result : 'Si' means 'death' primary and means 'serious disease to death', 'losing consciousness just like death' and so on. Conclusion : Someone who have concern traditional medical classics have to give attentions that characters in classics could get different meanings in same character.

  • In order to get the practical suggestions concerning the development of the domestic senior facilities in the rural area, a survey was made in the Philippines and Thailand to grip the policies and programs for senior, by visiting the government institute and senior village facilities. As for the Philippines, Philippine Retirement Authority was attracting investment of foreigners and individuals having Philippine citizenship, by issuing SRRV(the Special Resident Retiree's Visa), and as for Thailand, the Thai Longstay Management Company Limited was providing membership system for the abode of foreigners. In case of the domestic residence for seniors, it is suggested that the development of the senior housing community be designed in accordance with the diversified purposes of residence; that is, the prime concern of the community should be reflected on the characteristics of the retiree group (such as the lifestyle, health situation, etc), and at the same time, special concern also be showed on managing the community club house facilities, and keeping the amicable relations between the retiree residents and the local villagers.

  • The environment which surrounds us such as climates, technology change rapidly. Forecasting the future of food by reviewing the subject at the moment would be meaningful, because we could understand the impact of new technology, set the new goal and create the future by speaking out on issues of our concern and by our choices. There are two points of view on our future, one is pessimistic view due to the food and the water shortage, as well as environmental contamination. Another is optimistic view mainly because of innovative technologies. Biotechnology would enable to develope the personalized food using nutrigenomics, nutrigenetics, and nutraceuticals. Nanotechnology and shelf-life extension techniques would contribute great deal to the development of the future food. Consumer's concern for the health and the wellness as well as palatability would affect the development of future food so that the involvment of food cookery scientists are more important to meet the consumer's needs and trends.

  • Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) including endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals and personal care product chemicals (PPCPs) have recently received more attention because of their occurrence in water bodies and harmful impacts on human health and aquatic organisms. Triclosan is widely used as a synthetic broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent due to its antimicrobial efficacy. However, triclosan detected in aquatic environment has been recently considered as one of CECs, because of the potential for endocrine disruption, the formation of toxic by-products and the development of cross-resistance to antibiotics in aquatic environment. This comprehensive review focuses on the regulations, toxicology, fate and transport, occurrence and removal efficiency of triclosan. Overall, this review aims to provide better understanding of triclosan and insight into application of biological treatment process as an efficient method for triclosan removal.

  • There are concern on possible health effects from exposure to electric and magnetic fields. One reflection of this concern is the considerable controversy, delay, and cost increases involved in the construction of utility lines and facilities. To meet such challenges, in this paper we investigated magnetic fields reduction techniqies such as general compaction, in-span compaction, cruciform, vertical, 3way splits phase, and 4way splits phase. As results, we found 1 spacer in-span compaction was appropriate in Korea in view of effectiveness and economy.

  • As more than 90% of global trade is carried by sea there is little doubt that the safety of the ports at which the world's trading fleet call is of critical concern. The concept of 'safe port' continues to be an area of critical concern for charterers and ship-owners. In light of increased global security and health risks the recognised principles are under security. This paper examines the nature of safe port, and analyses the precedent trend of safe port and its Implication

  • Based on the theory of planned behavior, this study aims to examine the structural equation model among consumers' concerns and purchase intentions for alternative meats. Data were collected from 300 adults living in Kyeonggi Province. Results show that animal welfare, environmental concern, and health concern all have a direct and significant effect on purchase intention of alternative meat, and the mediation effect is also significant, indicating a partial mediation effect. The image of a company as caring about animal welfare and contributing to public causes can help sell alternative meats. Media publicity focusing on animal welfare for alternative meats can improve the attitudes of domestic consumers as well as their intention to purchase alternative meat products.

  • Objectives : Obesity is a worldwide health concern due to an increasing obese population. This study proposed to analyze the differences in medical costs and care utilization between obese and normal group using propensity score matching. Methods : Data were collected from the sample cohort database by the Korea National Health Insurance Corporation. Propensity score matching(PSM) was applied to control selection bias, and factors affecting obesity were used as covariates in PSM. Results : The results showed higher medical costs and care utilization in the obese group than the normal group. According to gender and medical type, there were differences in the relationships between obesity and medical charges and utilization. In particular, the differences in the female population were larger in both outpatients and inpatients than the male population. Conclusions : It is important to manage obesity, because obesity has a negative effect on national health insurance costs. These findings suggest directions for future research.
