  • In recent year, there has been a progressive increase in urban air pollution that is Characterized by high concentrations of atmospheric particulate matter (PM10), resulting primarily from increase of automobils, especially diesel engine powered cars. Although the mechanisms of underling respiratory morbidity due to PM10 are not nuclear, it is thought that the fine particles (PM2.5) are of gratest concern to health since they can be breathed most deeply into the lung, where they are likely to be more toxic than the larger particles.(omitted)

  • Use of mobile apps being extended, privacy concern on the side of the users is increased while they are willing to provide the private information to use the apps. In this study, we tried to identify the motivating elements that influence the users' intention to use the apps, based on the tendency towards regulatory focus and the privacy calculus theory. To verify the study model, we collected data from 151 adults who use health apps throughout the country, and analyzed the data using the PLS-SEM method. According to the result of the study, it was turned out that tendency towards promotion focus had negative impact on privacy concern and privacy danger, and tendency towards prevention focus had positive impact on privacy concern. Privacy concern had negative impact on the intention to use the mobile apps, and privacy benefit and privacy knowledge had positive impact on the intention to use the mobile apps. Finally, the intention to use the mobile apps had positive impact on the intention to continue to use the mobile apps. In this study, we identified different impacts of two types of tendency towards regulatory focus on privacy concern, and identified different influences on the intention to use the mobile apps accordingly.

  • In order to evaluate the effects of knowledge, attitude and practice on noise-induced hearing loss or hearing threshold level, questionnaire survey was performed and hearing thresholds of 1 kHz and 4 kHz were measured on 1,040 subjects with workers exposed to noise, safety and health officers. industrial hygienists, analysts rind office workers. The results were as follows ; 1. The following 6 factors were obtained by factor analysis and factor rotation of 30 questionnaire of knowledge, attitude and practice about noise; knowledge of noise (F1), concern of hearing protective devices (F2), concern of noise induced hearing loss (F3), concern of noise level and hearing impairment (F4), concern of noise in workplace (F5) and recognition of noised-induced hearing loss (F6). 56.1% of variance was explained by 6 factors. 2. Significant variables influencing knowledge, attitude and practice about noise were education level and age in F1, personal protective devices (PPE) and education level in F2, age and education level in F3, education level, age and sex in F4, PPE, education level, age and work duration in F5, and work duration and PPE in F6. 3. Hearing thresholds of 4 kHz were significantly higher in workers exposed to noise than that of in the other subjects and tended to be higher in industrial hygienists, safety and health officers and analysts than that of the office workers. 4. Significant variables influencing hearing thresholds of 1 kHz were age, education level, F5 and F6 in workers exposed to noise, and F1 in industrial hygienists. 5. Significant variables influencing hearing thresholds of 4 kHz were age, F6, sex, work duration, F1, F5, F2 and F3 in workers exposed to noise, F1 and age in safety and health officers, and F6, sex and F4 in industrial hygienists. With the above results, it suggested that workers exposed to noise be needed the education of knowledge, attitude and practice about noise in hearing conservation program for the prevention of noise induced hearing loss. Also, it suggested that health managers in workplace be needed countermeasures to prevent hearing loss although they are intermittently exposed to noise.

  • Objectives: This study aims to investigate the concept of microplastics and their occurrence, transport, biological effects, and management methods in the ocean. Methods: I reviewed articles on microplastics in the ocean by using the Google Scholar database. Results: Plastic litter has been reported as a ubiquitous pollutant in the ocean due to the extensive consumption of plastics and the mismanagement of plastic wastes. Microplastics are generally defined as synthetic polymer particles <5 mm in size. Microplastics generated from the degradation of plastic litter are currently a serious global concern since they spread easily all over the ocean, transfer to different tissues inside contaminated animals, and even across different trophic levels inside the food web. An additional concern is the ability of microplastics to adsorb organic and inorganic pollutants and subsequently release them into the ocean. Thus, alternatives to reduce microplastics in the ocean are discussed. Conclusions: This paper summarizes the concept of microplastics and their behavior in the ocean and suggests management methods for microplastics in support of a cleaner ocean.

  • The objective of this study is to stress the importance of sexuality education at school, to define its goals and to discuss ways on how to reinvigorate sexuality education. The negative conditions for adolescent sexual issues are now being expanded into all areas of Korean society. In particular, they should be regarded as one of serious social issues because of their adverse influences on adolescent groups. Various reports on juvenile sexual delinquencies have expressed serious concern over reckless and impulsive juvenile sexual deviations because they are closely related to the confusion of the youth in their sexual values and their common sexual deviations. Thus, for the youth who have attracted serious public concern, it is most important to have sound sexual awareness and attitude for the development of their healthy personality. In general, sexuality education should be conducted under individual responsibility of various levels of schools, families and communities. However, the role of schools where sexuality education should be conducted with concrete goals, that is, to interpret physical and psychological developments of youth in terms of education and teach them on the systematic goals of sexuality education, this role of schools is the most important than anything else in conducting sexuality education for youth.

  • A wide-spread contamination of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as dioxins, PCBs, PBDEs in the aquatic ecosystem has generated a great concern over the potential risk for these substances to impact marine biotas and food web. Since a major exposure route of these substances to the humans is through the consumption of food including fish and marine byproducts, the consumption of contaminated products has been a great public health concern. Exposure to POPs has been associated with a wide spectrum of adverse effects including reproductive, developmental, immunologic, carcinogenic, and neurotoxic effects. This review covers the background information of key POPs substances and the recent development of toxicity studies including the mode of action. Because neurotoxic effects of some POPs have been observed in humans at low concentrations, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), a representative chemical of POPs, is focused to discuss the possible mode(s) of action for the neurotoxic effects. This review provides the updates of toxicity studies on POPs and paves ways to discuss a possible implication of contaminated marine biota over the human health among the marine biotechnology researchers.

  • The principal objective of this study was to evaluate the consumption behavior and perceptions of environment-friendly agricultural products(EAPs) by university students in the Chonbuk area, Korea. Self-administered questionnaires were collected from 309 university students(male 33.0%, female 67.0%). Descriptive and comparative statistical analyses was completed using SPSS v. 12.0. The percentage of subjects who purchased EAPs was 70.9%. Of those, 87.2% had EAPs purchased by their mothers. The most purchased EAPs were vegetables, the primary reason for which was the perception of 'good for health'(73.1%). The main information source about EAPs was 'familes/freinds'. The average scores of 'attitude toward EAPs', 'knowledge toward EAPs', 'concern toward EAPs' were $3.76{\pm}0.57$, $2.91{\pm}0.61$ and $3.29{\pm}0.43$, respectively. With regards to 'attitude toward EAPs', the scores were significantly affected by 'self-reported health status'(p<0.05). With regard to 'knowledge toward EAPs' and 'concern toward EAPs', the scores were significantly affected by 'supplements for health' (p<0.05; p<0.001). For university students' right choices of EAPs, information and consumer education wthin the university curriculum on these products are necessary.

  • There has been an increase in the public concern about possible health risks by electromagnetic exposure from mobile phones. Recently, increase in the use among young children of portable telephones public concern regarding potential health hazards due to a hot spot appearing inside the infant head, has been growing. Since the biological hazards due to RF exposure are caused mainly by a temperature-rise in tissue, the effect of localized SAR for portable telephones should also be related to the temperature-rise in the human head. In this paper, it was measured that in the actual use of portable telephone the temperature of the local tissue in the human-head change. As a result, it should be noted that the mean temperature of human-body and localized tissue is rising from beginning call. However the temperature variation of localized tissue is recovered rapidly as normal temperature, although the mean temperature of human-body rising continuously at ending call of portable telephone.

  • This paper was conducted concerning the degree of indoor air quality in public transport vehicles such as taxicabs, buses and subway trains, as sampled through the active participation of drivers and passengers in Seoul between 13th August 2005 and 2nd November 2005. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Among the measured substances especially respirable particulate matters ($PM_{10}$), total bacteria counts (TBC) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) exceeded the standard level of $150{\mu}g/m^3,\;800CFU/m^3$ and 1000ppm. 2. The concentration of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in taxi recorded 2491ppm, which is more than the standard amount of 1000ppm. This level was comparatively higher than all other public transportation methods. Total bacteria counts (TBC) in bus and subway recorded $1082CFU/m^3\;and\;1856CFU/m^3$, respectively. 3. The drivers who regularly work long hours showed the higher concern about contamination of the air inside the public transport vehicles and they considered it to be worse than the air outside. In contrast, the general public showed less concern about the air quality inside the public transport vehicles. However, they too acknowledged that the quality of the air inside the public transport vehicles was poor. In regards to the degree of indoor air quality in the public transport vehicles, a counterplan must be implemented urgently to effectively combat the excessive levels of $PM_{10}$, microorganism and $CO_2$. We need to gather more conclusive evidence pertaining to other possible contaminants and influencing factors.

  • We surveyed 837 students attending elementary schoolchildren in Korea for health functional foods (HFF) consumption and significant variables for their HFF consumption including demographic characteristics, parental health concern on offsprings, food eating frequency of subjects and beliefs on potential efficacy of HFF by subjects. The consumption prevalence of HFF was 45.9%, and among all types of HFF, nutritional supplements were taken most frequently, followed by apricot extract-fermented products > lactic acid bacteria containing products > EPA/DHA containing products > red ginseng products. HFF consumption was higher in subjects had parents of high education level (p < .05) and those from families with a high socioeconomic status (p < .01) in comparison to each corresponding group. Health concern on offsprings by parents (p < .001) and consumption ratio of HFF by family (p < .001) was higher in consumers than in nonconsumers of HFF. Total score of dietary assessment was higher in consumers than in nonconsumers of HFF (p < .01), and consumers had a more positive view concerning the potential efficacy of HFF than did nonconsumers (p < .001). Most consumers of HFF took HFF when they were healthy (42.5%), and they did not feel special effects through HFF consumption (47.7%). Most consumers of HFF got the information on HFF from family and relatives (24.8%), and most of them purchased HFF at pharmacy or oriental medicine clinics (53.9%). HFF consumers preferred multi-vitamins and Ca-supplements most among the vitamin mineral supplements belonged to HFF. Given the widespread consumption of HFF by elementary schoolchildren, the reasonable consumption of these products for the contribution to their overall health and well-being should be emphasized through nutrition education for them and their family.
