The open space of the healing facility should contribute to the psychological and social healing of the users, provide a social environment for rest, and provide a design factor to support the walking path to move to the destination-connected space. In this paper, I examined the relationship between the environmental elements, spatial devices, and the characteristics of the design factors in the open space for healing facilities. As a research method, based on the analysis of previous studies, a healing facility in modern society was defined, and the relationship between the social support and physical environment factors of the healing facility where open space was considered. Through the consideration of cases, the characteristics of the physical space environment, and the design factors of the open space in the healing facility were categorized. As a result of research, open space in the healing facility is a space to promote a social exchange of users, as a physical form for accommodating psychological and social healing functions, it is necessary to construct the connection of the external space with the internal space.

Today, modern people are exposed to various environmental pollutants such as harmful substances and stress, which can compromise health. Therefore, a healing culture that seeks to enjoy human life based on the healing of body and mind is attracting great attention. The purpose of this study is to develop environmentally friendly natural dyeing considering a healing concept with four elements: color, dye, material, and pattern. The research methods and scope are based on a theoretical review of healing and research on the literature of bedding related to natural dyes, national and international books, the Internet, etc., and naturally dyed bedding. This paper presents actual production research. The results of this study are as follows. First, the elements of color, dyeing, material and pattern were developed through the process of a bedding design development model that applies a healing concept and can be commercialized as a healing bedding product. Second, a healing color proposal was expressed in an intermediate color system of pink, ocher, lavender, and indigo colors for emotional stability, warmth, calmness, comfort and softness. Third, eco-friendly bedding using natural dyes with medicinal efficacy can obtain the healing effect of the natural treatment method, which can aid healthy sleep. Fourth, the pattern used in the bedclothes was a motif of Sarasa embroidery, flower embroidery, ribbon embroidery, and wave quilting motifs to provide psychological stability as a healing concept in the sleeping environment. The natural healing bedding with the healing concept proposed in this study has natural treatment that is beneficial to human health and the development of bedding with natural dyes will lead to an increase of demand for the sleeping environment.

This study suggested the environmental components for open space in a healing environment based on the social support approach for integrating and enhancing users' activities and interactions. The physical environments of the open space in healing facilities should be suggested by social support design and support the interactions of various users. Particularly architectural environment conditions should reinforce the contribution to the revitalization of medical facilities based on improving the healing effect of patients through mutual exchange of users. The open space environment conditions influence users' healing process with physical design factors and users' interactions, and the flexible environments based on the social support that is crucial for circulation and mutual exchange of users. The open space transformation, integration of technology, and wayfinding system with color and signage also allow users to improve the space experience and easy access. The environmental components of open space design should include easy access for user inflow, flexible layout for comfort, access to outdoor spaces, integration of warm color schemes for relaxation, personalization of spaces with artwork, and visual interest through the use of textures and materials.

The negative memories which come from tragic events such as war, terror or various conflicts in modern cities have been threatening the mental health of city-dwellers. This thesis focuses on 'healing public space' that will help recover the life of city-dwellers who sustain various trauma. For this, the author investigated the significant memorial space through 1980-2010 from site visits, interviews, and related theses and books and then extracted necessary information from each period. This thesis aims to find the changes of the memorial concepts and visitor's reaction for last 30years. 1)1980-: Healing concept and visitor's positive response 2)1990-: Healing by emotional experience approaches to the memorial museum such as narrative approach, exhibition media using 5senses, interactive display and preserving trace, 3)early 2000-: Healing by architectural experience 4)2002-: present: Healing projects by various programs. Steady advances in memorial design for healing trauma are due to the efforts for emotional design approach to eeply move the visitors and the efforts have to be continued. The study emphasize the importance of attracting eople by experimental, emotional design contents not just by aesthetic and functional public design ideas.

The purpose of this study is to define the concept of sustainability, to understand the traditional belief system, to comprehend user-focused healing environment, to understand the current status of Korean Hospitals, to analyze the selected case studies, and to point the way toward enhanced architectural solutions for healing environment in hospitals. The research results indicate that the design of healthcare facilities with healing effects depend on the considerations of 5 senses of patients. In other words, the sustainable design approach to create a healthy healing environment is very important, and architects must be aware of diverse sensory needs of the patients. In addition, the following factors affection healthcare facilities must be considered to create healing environment for users: - "Emphasis on sustainable Design" for harmony among nature, man, and building. - Creation of user Focused Healing Environment reflecting the suers' senses. - Search for New Hospital Forms through various design experiments to create the most suitable healing environment. - "Perception of Paradigm Shift" form a focus on sickness-oriented to wellness-oriented healthcare facility design. - "Awareness of Creating User-Friendly Environment" covering the entire age group form youth to elderly.

Purpose: This study is to propose direction for healing environment design in hospital architecture considering the characteristics of elderly patients. The primary goal of a public hospital is providing cheap health care and quality service chance to the underprivileged and elderly in the dead zone. Compared to the rapid increase of the aged population and chronic diseases, Ministry of Health & Welfare is currently planning model of health promotion hospital in development plans of local based public hospital. Due to the increased elderly medical expenses, elderly patients' high utilization is considered. Methods: The literature on the design factors of healing environments were investigated. based on this, analyzed drawings of surveyed hospitals ward in architectural characteristics and observe and evaluate directly healing environment design through field surveys. Results: The design of hospital environment affects patient's therapeutic effect. There is no any official formula for hospital design but environment that architect create could be a big part of the healing process. To increase the quality of the environment, apply the characteristic factors and harmonize well as a human-centered healing environment. Implications: Healing environment design for the elderly is first necessary condition due to high proportion of elderly patients.

Although nursing homes where physically weak seniors live must be planned as an healing environment for maintaining and improving holistic health conditions of the senior residents, many of the nursing homes in Korea are currently placed in poor environment due to lack of minimum criteria or design guideline for spatial planning. Therefore, this study aims to extract healing elements shown in nursing home design guidelines that have been developed and utilized in several developed welfare countries where aging has started before Korea. The subjects of this study were 4 international nursing homes design guidelines; and they were analyzed by the content analysis technique. As for analysis units, design guideline items were selected; and spatial composition, three dimensions of health, and healing elements for supporting the health conditions were used as analysis categories. As results, firstly, among total 259 guidelines, the guidelines that commonly applied to all the spaces turned out to be the most, then the guidelines to be applied in bathroom turned out to be the most. Secondly, in terms of holistic health, the proportion of design guideline for supporting physical health turned out to be highest followed by the one for mental health and social health. Thirdly, In terms of healing elements, items for safety, accessibility, comfort, and convenience that supported physical health and cognition that supported mental health turned out to be high. This study is expected to provide the framework for comprehensively understanding the existing design guidelines of nursing homes in the perspective of healing and to be utilized as fundamental resource for spatial planning to improve healing effects in the nursing homes in the future.

This project was planned to construct the healing environment in medical clinic. The concepts of design were extracted from the literatures on this subject, and reflected on the output of design. The main concepts for the healing environment consisted of light, control of privacy and communication, efficiency, comfort, and identity. As a result the healing values had been realized in this medical clinic with design concepts, and we expected that they would provide users of this clinic with well-being society.

For the elderly with declining sensory due to aging, various sense stimulation factors provided in indoor environment is desirable healing environment. This study aims to propose the direction of sensory healing environment by adapting the richness of natural environment in indoor place based on the biophilic design theory with implementation method of sensory richness environment. The healing environment was limited to the ward in the beginning, but it has widened its range to the whole place, and the lobby is considered quiet important to healing. Therefore, this study selected lobby space of geriatric hospital as study subject. As for the study method, we deducted the analytic matrix focusing on the property and elements of the direct and indirect experience of nature appearing in the biophilic design theory, and analyzed the field investigation of subject space. Also, this study paid attention to point where the hotel lobby leads the change of emotional environment, and conducted analysis and comparison by deciding this is what the hotel and geriatric hospital should direct to. As the result, the biophilic design factor of hotel is actively expressed by complex direction of various factors, but as for the geriatric hospital, it was rather passive and simple in expression. The adaptation ratio between hotel and geriatric hospital was almost more than twice times difference in average.

Healing Environment is to cure the user as a whole by considering his social, psychological aspect, beyond the functional aspect of treatment. Various design elements of healing space have been developed so far, but they were mostly described with same rank. Even though every element is significant, facilities such as nursing homes tends to run with low budget, and they can't fulfill them all at the same time. It is important to find the sequence between design elements. The purpose of this study is to reorganize the design principles of healing environment by Maslow's hierarchy of needs(Physiological needs, Safety needs, Love/Affilitation needs, Self-Esteem needs and Self-Actualization needs), and analyze elderly nursing homes and examine the framework itself by application. Research method was consist of literature review on healing space design elements and hierarchy of needs, reconstruction of design elements with hierarchy, and application on 5 Korean nursing home cases. As the result, Maslow's hierarchy of needs and design elements were linked with good balance. Analysis of 5 nursing homes revealed that lower needs were short of environmental support compared to higher needs. Especially design elements related to Physiological needs should be improved. Also, new framework had strength in not only providing gasps on current situation in detail, but also suggesting elements for improvement with hierarchy and sequence. Through this research healing environment design elements and human needs were linked. Nursing home is the last environment for the elderly, which should help to heal their body and mind and also support them to accomplish self-actualization.
