The objective of this study was to develop effective oral formulations of rhEGF for gastric ulcer healing using polycarbophil. hydroxypropylcellulose(HPC) and sucralfate as its bioadhesive bases. Cytoprotective effects of rhEGF, cell proliferation and differentiation. on the ulcers induced by ethanol or acetic acid in rats were studied. rhEGF release from HPC formulation was much faster than that from polycarbophil formulation. HPC formulation combined with small amount of sucralfate showed much slower release of rhEGF than only HPC base only. rhEGF preparations with bioadhesive polymers showed better effects on the healing of gastric ulcers than EGF solution when administered orally. When rhEGF preparations were administered at once and the animals were under starvation, polycarbophil formulation showed better effect on gastric ulcers than HPC formulation. Otherwise, when rhEGF preparations were given more than three times and the rats were fed normally, HPC formulation showed good healing efficacy of ulcers compared to polycarbophil formulation. rhEGF showed dose-dependent effect on the healing of both chronic and acute ulcers.

Ginseng has been used as miraculous panacea since ancient times in oriental countries. In spite of voluminous work, ginseng still remains mysterious herb, but its value is becoming more recognized in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields. In this study, we investigated the effect of Panax ginseng on wound healing using two experimental methods. First, we studied the effect of ginseng on artificial wound of cultured human keratinocyte monolayer. Indivisual components from ginseng (ginsenoside Rb2, Rc, Re, Rg1, and panasenoside) and giseng extrats were examined. Of them, compared with control, ginsenoside Rb2 and Rg1 needed much shorter time to recover original appearance of momolayer. Second, we investigated the effect of ginseng on acute injury on dorsal skin of hairless mice. We here observed that ginseng has prominent effect than Madecasol(asiaticoside), a well known wound healing agent. These results were deduced that ginseng promoted wound healing in the wound region due to its stimulation of biosynthesis of various endogeneous materials that have relation to wound healing. Furthermore, we conformed that ginsenoside Rg1 exhibited anti-inflammatory activity on rat paw edema induced by carageenan. These results suggest that Panax ginseng C.A Meyer can be used in the cosmetics in that its wound healing and anti-inflammatory effects.

Wound care has become increasingly important over the years. Various synthetic products for wound care treatment have been reported to cause toxic side effects and therefore natural products are in significant demand as they have minimal side effects. The presence of bioactive compounds in medicinal mushrooms contributes to various biological activities which assist in the early inflammatory phase, keratinocyte proliferation, and its migration enhancement which are pertinent to wound rehabilitation. Lignosus rhinocerus (tiger milk mushroom) can reduce the inflammation phase in wound healing by fighting off bacterial infection and modulating pro-inflammatory cytokines expression in the early stage to avoid prolonged inflammation and tissue damage. The antibacterial, immunomodulating, and anti-inflammatory activities exhibited by most macrofungi play a key role in enhancing wound healing. Several antibacterial and antifungal compounds sourced from traditional botanicals/-products may prevent further complications and reoccurrence of injury to a wounded site. Scientific studies are actively underway to ascertain the potential use of macrofungi as a wound healing agent.

This study was conducted to find out the effects of agro-healing activities and strolling on the physiological conditions of patients with chronic metabolic diseases. A total of 11 subjects participated in agro-healing activities, and their average age was 49.6±11.3. Changes in their salivary cortisol were compared and analyzed before and after participating in the agro-healing activity program, and it was found that the stress hormone decreased after participating in the program. Differences in brain wave between before and after participating in agro-healing activities and strolling were measured, and the ratio of alpha to high beta (RAHB) of subjects increased in most of the measured points after participating in agro-healing activities. In addition, the increase in the value in the temporal lobe (T3) that controls mortor skills and occipital lobe (O2) that controls visual functions indicates that the activities were effective in improving relaxation and stability. The relative low beta (RLB) power spectrum of subjects also statistically significantly decreased in the right occipital lobe (O2) that controls visual functions, the relative mid beta (RMB) and relative high beta (RHB) power spectrum decreased in the left temporal lobe (T3) and the right occipital lobe (O2). These results indicate that the activities were effective in improving relaxation under no stress and tension. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure of subjects after participating in agro-healing activities decreased from the prehypertension level to the normal level. These results indicate that horticultural activities and visual elements in healing farms, such as agro-healing activities and strolling, have positive impacts on patients with chronic metabolic diseases accompanied with diabetes or high blood pressure by increasing the brain activity and psycho-physiological conditions of participants.

Recently, the self-healing technique is being investigated to repair the damaged polymeric composites by the use of microcapsules with the healing agent. This technique can obtains both the damage detection and the damage repair simultaneously over the converntional repairing techniques. In this study, the effects of the catalyst ratio to the healing agent and thermal characteristics to the mixtures of healing agent are investigated through single lap shear tests and DSC. The Healing agents such as DCPD, ENB, and their mixtures are considered and Grubb's catalyst is used as a catalst.

When manufacturing self-healing concrete using bacteria, nutrients are added to increase the activity of the bacteria. Although many researches have focused on the effects of nutrients containing bacterial healing agent on concrete, few have studied the effects of sole nutrient on self-healing of cement composites. Bacterial nutrients, like commercial chemical admixtures, affect hydration characteristics such as flow, setting, hydration heat, mechanical strength of cement composites and also affect the self healing of cement composites by hydration of unhydrated particles. In this study, effect of the four nutrient commonly used in the existing literature on the hydration characteristics of cement composites by its addition was investigated. Flow, setting time, hydration heat, compressive strength have studied for each nutrients added by 1.5% and 3% of cement weight. Experimental results shows that urea and calcium-nitrate can be used up to 3% without significant detrimental effect on cement composites. Addition of calcium-lactate up to 1.5% show better compressive strength than control, but addition of 3% show almost non-hydration. Yeast extract shows detrimental effects on the composites regardless of the amount added.

The objective of this study is to investigate the self-healing properties of ternary blended cement(TBC) paste made with OPC, GGBFS and FA. The influence of OPC-GGBFS-FA on the self-healing ability of ternary blended cement paste was researched by ultrasonic pulse velocity(UPV) measurement. The TBC paste with GGBFS-FA replacement ratios of 20%, 40% and 60% were prepared having a constant water-cementitious materials ratios os 0.5. The research focuses on behavior after 28days(after loading). Four-point bending tests are used to pre-cracked the prismatic specimens at 28days. For specimens (uncracked and cracked) submerged in tap-water and sea-water until 60days. According to the experimental results, the TBC paste system has self-healing ability increased when the fraction of GGBFS increased. Because GGBFS and FA continues to hydrate after 28days, it is likely that hydrated products from GGBFS and FA may modify microstructures, seal these cracks. From these results, it is clear that the crack in all samples experience self-healing and that this occurs mostly in the first 30days of submerging. Futhermore, most of the healing for both specimens of submerged in sea-water and tap-water occurred during the first 30days. Sea-water submerged specimens healed cracks as fast as those in tap-water. Differences in healing effects of submerged in sea-water and tap-water may be attributed to the presence of specific sea-water ions. Therefore, self-healing effects considered age-effects was more strong effect occurred mostly in the first 30days, and then gradually weaken.
Ketoprofen has been used as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAI) agent for analgesia in surgical patients and increasing numbers of surgical patients are chronically take some forms of NSAI drugs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of ketoprofen on the healing of a closed linear surgical wound and on the contraction of an opened surgical wound in rats. The experimental groups were divided into two groups and ten rats were allocated in each group. In ketoprofen-treated group, the rats were given 2.5 mg/mg/day of ketoprofen by s.c. for ten days. In control group, the rats were given 1ml of benzyl alcohol and distilled water by s.c. for ten days. After time period, all rats were sacrificed, and the breaking strength and the collagen concentrations, at the wound site, were measured. In ketoprofen-treated group, the mean breaking strength and the mean collagen concentration were significantly decreased when compared with those of controls. The ketoprofen-treated group had shown a mean rate of wound contraction less than that of the control, although not statistically significant. These results suggested that ketoprofen impaired wound healing.
A novel gastric ulcer healing formulation, a mixture of Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Halloysitum Rubrum and Ostreae Testa (Dihaos), was examined for gastric ulcer healing effects. The effect of Dihaos was assessed in various gastric ulcer models in rats. Oral administration of Dihaos significantly reduced HCl-ethanol-induced gastric ulcers. Dihaos also significantly reduced gastric and duodenal ulcers induced by cysteamine. Ostreae Testa decreased secretion of gastric juice and increased the pH of gastric juice. Furthermore, the extracts of Dioscoreae Rhizoma affected the cell proliferation of MKN 74 cells. These results suggest that the healing effect of Dihaos on gastrohemorrhagic lesions results from its protective effect against acid secretion and proliferation of mucosal cells in induced gastric ulcers in rats.
