This study is purpose to obtain data for anemia prevalance and eating habits of high school girls who have been working at the industry. 190 subjects residing in Incheon are participated in the study. The blood test results indicate that 40.5%of the subjects belongs to the anemia group and its Hb(hemoglobin) level is 11.3$\pm$0.8g/이 and the remaining 59.9% the normal group shows 12.9$\pm$0.6g/dl Hb level. The eating habit of the subjects do not show any significant differences between these two groups. Their eating habit appears to be equally poor in both groups. The eating habit score of the anemia groups is 84.94$\pm$10.44 and the normal group, 88.97$\pm$14.51. And there is significant correlations between food containing protein and Hb level.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the effect of Intenet diabetes education varied by gender. Method: An experimental group assessed pre- and post intervention was used to assess the effectiveness of diabetes education by nurses. Forty patients separated into two groups by gender partook in the study. The goal of the intervention was to keep blood glucose concentrations close to normal range. The intervention was applied weekly for 3 months. Participants were requested to input their blood glucose level, diet, and exercise diary everyday at http://www.biodang.com by cellular phone or wire Internet. The researcher sent optimal recommendations to each patient using the short message service of cellular phones and wire Internet. All medication adjustments were communicated to the subjects' doctors. The plasma glucose levels, serum lipids, and care satisfaction were measured before and after the intervention. Result: Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) decreased 1.6% and 0.8% in male and female patients respectively after 3 months of education. Total cholesterol decreased 37.2mg/dl in male patients but increased 80.5mg/dl in female patients. Conclusion: These findings indicated that Internet diabetes education could improve HbA1c and total cholesterol in male patients.

We surveyed Korean pregnant women who participated in the Maeil mothers' club and factory tour from March to April, 2004 and assessed volunteers' hemoglobin (Hb) levels. The average Hb level of 747 subjects was $11.5{\pm}1.5g/dl$ and anemic subjects were 268 women, 35.9% of total subjects. The ratio of anemic subjects was 42.9% in the first trimester, 43.6% in the second trimester and 29.1 % in the third trimester. About 87.9% of subjects began to take health foods after conception. Seventy nine percent of subjects took iron supplement as one of health foods and 73.8% of them began it in the second trimester. The results of this study showed that health foods were more effective than iron supplement alone in improving the iron status of Korean pregnant women. Therefore, the better improvement effects are expected when pregnant women begin health food-based approaches as early as possible before pregnancy to improve pre-pregnancy iron reserve.
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of telephone follow-up on glycemic control, lipid profiles. and treatment method in diabetic patients with depressive symptoms over one year follow-up period. Twenty-two diabetic patients attended the structured diabetes education program between March 2004 and February 2005 and completed a questionnaire using the Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) to measure depressive symptoms. The patients showed depressive symptoms with the criterion being a BDI score at least 16. The intervention was applied to the telephone follow-up for one year. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed rank test and McNemar test. The patients decreased their mean glycosylated hemoglobin(HbAlc) levels by 1.9%(p=0.001). There was a significant mean change in the fasting blood sugar(FBS) level, with a mean change of -61mg/$d{\ell}$(p=0.008). These findings indicated that the telephone follow-up may be effective in the HbAlc and FBS control.
The purpose of this study was to obtain reference data of parameters for hematological health diagnosis in cultured freshwater fish and also evaluate application of automatic dry-type chemistry analyzer (FUJI DRI-CHEM 3000) used to those blood tests. A blood profile of total 200 fish for rainbow trout (Onchorhynchus mykiss), israel carp (Cyprinus carpio), tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and eel (Anguilla japonica) cultured in Inland Fisheries Research Institute of NFRDI was determined by hemoglobin (Hb) and plasma chemistry tests: total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TCHO), creatinine (CRE), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), glucose (GLU). The values of ALT, TG, LDH, ALB, TCHO, AST and ALP were outside from the minimum and/or maximum of the established detectable range of the analyzer. ALT and TG were not detectable in the range of 67%~61.5%. LDH, ALB and TCHO were not detectable in the range of 36~17%. AST and ALP were not detectable in the range of 5.5~0.5%. However, the values of BUN, CRE, GLU, Hb and TP were below the detectable limits of the analyzer.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of lead on the incidence of anemia and to find cases with lead poisoning early among female workers who have been exposed to lead occupationally, for one year from August, 1985. The level of blood lead and hemoglobin concentration were observed for 284 female lead workers and 123 female non-lead workers of industries in the Gumi industrial complex in Kyungpook Province. The average age was $20.3{\pm}2.9$years and $21.1{\pm}3.5$ years in lead workers and non-lead workers, respectively. The average working duration was $26.46{\pm}19.26$ months in lead workers. The mean value of blood lead was $30.11{\pm}6.61{\mu}g/100ml$ and $21.86{\pm}3.75{\mu}g/100ml$ in lead workers and non-lead workers, respectively. There were significant differences between two groups. The mean value of hemoglobin concentration was $14.00{\pm}0.57g/100ml$ and $14.03{\pm}0.64g/100ml$ in lead workers and non-lead workers, respectively. Anemia cases were not observed at Hb concentration below 12g/100ml. The percentages of lead workers at Hb concentration ranged 12.0~13.0g/100ml were 4.5%. There was no dose-response relationship between blood lead level and the incidence of anemia. There were no remarkable differences between age and blood lead level as well as Hb concentration, and between working duration and the level of blood lead and hemoglobin.

Objective: A prediabetes hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level of 5.7%-6.4% is considered a risk factor for diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the USA. In this study, we assessed the HbA1c and visceral fat levels as CVD risk factors in health check-up examinees who were not yet diagnosed with diabetes. Methods: Totally, 507 study subject were categorized as per criteria of the American Diabetes Association, depending on whether the HbA1c level was ${\geq}5.7%$ or <5.7%. Lipid levels, blood pressure, BMI (kg/$m^2$), total abdominal, and visceral fat levels were measured by computed tomography. Results: The mean of HbA1c in the male group was larger than the mean in the female group and their values were, respectively, $6.03{\pm}0.82%$ and $5.88{\pm}0.72%$(p<0.05). Only the mean values of age and visceral fat area were different between $HbA1c{\geq}5.7%$ and <5.7% in both male and female group(p<0.05). Visceral fat levels were significantly associated with HbA1c in the group of HbA1c ${\geq}5.7%$ (odds ratio=1.005, 95% CI 1.002~1.008). Conclusions: Visceral fat levels were significantly higher and correlated with the group which HbA1c level is ${\geq}5.7%$. This finding suggests that subjects who have high levels of HbA1c should be carefully monitored during prediabetes and should have chance to have health education programs.
Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of herbal medicine on blood glucose in diabetic patients. Methods: The subjects were patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) who had been admitted to Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital for more than 8 weeks for a primary diagnosis other than DM and who had taken herbal medicine for more than 8 weeks from January 2010 to February 2020. The medical records were analyzed retrospectively to confirm the characteristics of the subjects, and examination results included hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine. Changes in HbA1c before and after taking herbal medicine and changes according to subgroups were analyzed. Results: A total of 149 subjects with type 2 DM were selected as participants. After taking the herbal medicine, the HbA1c value was significantly decreased, and the statistical significance was maintained even when the effect of controlling antidiabetic agents was excluded. The decrease in HbA1c was higher in the poor glycemic control group. Liver and kidney functions did not show any significant changes after taking the herbal medicine. Conclusions: Administration of herbal medicine for a long period of 8 weeks or longer did not increase HbA1c in patients with DM complicated by other various diseases.
Objectives: We examined if their hematological status could be changed by blood loss in patients treated with bleeding pressure therapy. Methods: The patients were divided into two groups as follows: The Subject group(B) were 42 cases treated with bleeding pressure therapy. The Control group(N) were 43 cases treated with negative bleeding pressure therapy, We checked CBC & differ cell count of two groups. Results: The means of RBC, Hb count and Hct were slightly decreased after 1 week. but they were recovered after 2 weeks. Conclusions: These results indicate that Bleeding Pressure Therapy don't reduced RBC, Hb count and Hct in Patients.

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of iron supplementation on iron-deficiency-related indices, oxidative stress and antioxidative enzyme activity in female marathoners. Fourteen teenage female marathoners participated in the study. Subjects were divided into two groups: mild anemic and control, depending on their hemoglobin (Hb) level. The mild anemic group had significantly lower RBC count and hematocrit (Hct) and Hb levels compared to the control group. The mild anemic group (〈12.5g Hb/dI, n=7) was given iron supplements (60mg Fe/day) for four weeks during the summer training period. RBC count, Hct and Hb levels showed an increasing tendency through iron supplementation, and significant differences in these variables between the anemic and control groups disappeared in the post-period. There was no difference in plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) between the anemic and control groups. However, catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity were significantly higher in the anemic group. The significant difference in enzyme activity between the groups disappeared in the post-period. In addition, superoxide dismutase activity significantly decreased after iron supplementation. In conclusion, antioxidative enzyme activity was up-regulated in an anemic condition and mild iron supplementation decreased the antioxidant enzyme activity of female marathoners while improving their anemic condition.
