  • According to the rising of national economic level. domestic consumption of vegetables having high additive values is increased continuously due to increased consumption of meat in last decade. These vegetables are produced almost in this country and are limited to import from neighbor countries in due of high transportation expenses for storing in refrigerated container. It is very important to mechanize the harvest work, forming more than 30% for their production cost, in order to cultivate variable vegetables at the same time according to their harvesting seasons. In this state its former harvest methods, with using of human power or semi-automatic harvest, caused to increase their production cost due to high labor cost and low working efficiency. The former onion harvest being operated almost by semi-automatic plant distributer mechanism have many limit and troublesome for cultivation spaces, vinyle mulched ridge, gravel mixture in soil. Therefore, it is necessary to develope a fully automatic and self-running situation and overcome above handicaps, even in the farm covered with vinyle house or mulch sheets. This newly developed onion harvest can be applied to plant various young trees and will be able to export together with onion haying their competition in the worldwide market in which the culinary vegetable method or farm conditions is similar to our country.

Mechanical harvest efficiency to rhizomes of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch. (지황의 기계수확 효율비교)

  • This study was carried out to determine an effective mechanical harvester for rhizomes of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch. Labor-saving efficiency showed 69∼76% by using tillage operations with power tiller, digger attached to power tiller, and digger attached to tractor compared with manual harvest. Loss percentage of rhizomes by mechanical harvesters was 3.1∼ 9.3% higher, and fresh rhizome yield was 2∼6% lower than that by manual harvest, respectively. Although it showed higher loss percentage of rhizomes and lower fresh rhizome yield compared with manual harvest, mechanical harvest using digger attached to power tiller or digger attached to tractor was effective in labor-saving for rhizomes of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch.

Quality of Single-Harvested Red Peppers by Harvest Time and Fruit Grade (시기를 달리하여 일시 수확한 고추의 등급별 품질)

  • 'Manita', a red pepper cultivar, and 'HL', a cultivar bred for single-harvest by National Horticultural Research Institute, were cultivated using direct sowing method, and all fruits were harvested five times at on interval of one week, and were grouped into five grades by color and appearance (drying degree). The amount of red fruits increased gradually with increasing harvest time, and at the fifth harvest time, the ratios of red fruits were 80.9 and 79.1% for Manita and HL, respectively. Among red fruits, the portion of ROO grade (red pepper dried considerably on the plant) was 42.9%, RO (red pepper dried partially on the plant) 31.9%, and RF (fresh red pepper) 6.1% for Manita. For HL, the portions of RO and RF were 56.7 and 22.4%, respectively. As fruits aged, the redness intensified. ROO, RO, and RF fruits had ASTA color values of 150.4, 140.1, and 107.4 for Manita, and for HL, those of RO and RF were 100.0 and 77.1, respectively. The contents of capsaicinoids, organic acid, and sugar were not significantly different with the harvest time.

  • One of the most pressing issues facing the dairy industry is drought. In areas where annual precipitation is low, irrigation for growing feed presents the greatest water-utilization challenge for dairy producers. Here, we investigated the effects of cultivar and harvest days after planting (DAP) on dry matter (DM) yield and nutritive value of teff (Eragrostis tef), a warm-season annual grass native to Ethiopia that is well adapted to drought conditions. Eighty pots were blocked by location in a greenhouse and randomly assigned to four teff cultivars (Tiffany, Moxie, Corvallis, and Dessie) and to five harvest times (40, 45, 50, 55, or 60 DAP). Cultivars had no effect on DM yield and nutritive value. As harvest time increased from 40 to 60 DAP, DM yield and ash-free neutral detergent fiber (aNDFom) concentrations increased, while crude protein (CP) concentrations and in vitro NDF digestibility decreased. To assess carryover effects of time of harvest on yield and nutritive value, two additional cuttings were taken from each pot. Increasing first-cutting harvest time decreased CP concentrations in the second cutting and reduced DM yields in the second and third cutting. Harvesting teff between 45 and 50 DAP best optimized forage yield and nutritive value in the first and subsequent cuttings.

Tolerance of Rice, Soybean, and Hot Pepper to Simulated Acid Rain at Different Growth Stages (벼, 콩, 고추의 생육시간별 인공 산성비에 대한 내성)

  • To compare the tolerance of crops to acid rain at different growth stages a simulated acid rain (SAR) of pH 2.7 was applied to rice, soybean, and hot pepper from vegetative growth stage to harvest (Veget.-Harvest) and from reproductive growth stage to harvest (Reprod.-Harvest). Visual damages of crops by SAR were greater in the order of rice < hot pepper < soybean and greater at Veget.-Harvest than at Reprod.-Harvest treatment. Chlorophyll content of all crops was greater in the order of Veget.-Harvest < Reprod.-Harvest treatment < control, but photosynthetic activity was not affected by SAR treatments. Nitrogen concentration and uptake of rice plants at harvest were similar among SAR treatments, but those of soybean and hot pepper were greater at Veget.-Harvest treatment than at Reprod.-Harvest treatment or control. Sulfur concentration of all crops was not affected by SAR treatments, but total sulfur uptake of soybean was greater in SAR treatments than untreated control. Grain yield of rice and soybean was not affected by SAR although grain fertility, percent ripened grains, and 1,000-grain weight of rice at Veget.-Harvest treatment were lower compared with Reprod.-Harvest treatment or control. Fruit dry weight of hot pepper was greater in the order of Veget.-Harvest < Reprod.-Harvest < control due to decreased fruit number per plant and average fruit weight. At one time application of SAR at flowering stage, brown spots were observed on the spikelets of rice at below pH 2.3. Petals of soybean and hot pepper were wilted at pH below 1. 7 and 2.0, respectively, but fruit setting was not affected by the pH of the SRA.

Comparison of Quality Properties of Rice Cultivars for Beverage Processing (음료가공을 위한 쌀 품종별 품질 특성 비교)

  • The properties of rice were studied on five rice cultivars (Ilpumbyeo, Samkwang, Goami-4, Dodamssal, and Thai rice), and employed two kinds of saccharification treatment methods (treatment I : rice shape, treatment II: grinding rice shape). Thai rice showed differences in width and length when compared to other cultivars of rice, and the Goami 4 had the lowest thousand-grain weight. The Goami4 and Dodamssal each showed high contents of amylose and resistant starch, and the water absorption rate was close to maximum at 90 minutes as well as the highest level of Goami 4 at all times. The qualities of highest water-binding capacity, solubility and swelling power was most significant in Thai rice. The lowest hardness level of wet rice resulted in the lowest hydration-related characteristics. High amylose content rice, in particular, showed low sugar content and slightly increased sugar content as the saccharification process improved (treatment II). On the other hand, high amylose cultivars had the same high degree of hardness as boiled rice. From these results, the Dodamssal was found to have the lowest viscosity at all temperatures but highest viscosity during the saccharification process, suggesting it may be successfully implemented as a thickener in rice beverage processing. The purpose of this study was to attempt to provide basic data on the development of rice beverage manufacturing technology, based upon the quality characteristics related to beverage processing of rice cultivars.

Dry Matter Yield and Feed Value of Oat Plant at Various Planting and HaNesting Date in Fall (가을 재배 사초용 연맥의 파종 시기 및 수확시기별 건물 수량과 사료가치)

  • This expeiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of the different planting and harvest date on dry matter yield and feed value of forage oat (Avena sativa L.). Seeds were planted on September 1 (first), September 11 (second) and September 21 (third planting date) by hand between rows 30cm and harvest were achieved on November 7 (first) and November 19 (second harvest date) 1992. 1. The plant height was influenced by planting and harvest date. the first planting date showed the tallest plant height. 2. Dry matter (DM) content decreased with delaying planting date from first to third planting date, DM varied from 15.1 to 13.5% and increased with delaying harvest date from first to second harvest date at the same planting date. 3. Leaf weight ratio increased delaying planting date from first to third planting date, varied from 52 to 77%. 4. The content of crude protein increased with delaying planting date from first to third planting date, varied from 14.3 to 25.4% NDF and ADF contents were influenced by planting date and harvest date, it was decreased with delaying planting date. 5. The dry matter yields per ha decreased with delaying planting date: it was 6, 705, 5, 520, and 2, 315 kg at first, second and third planting date, respectively. Significant difference has been obtained among planting date(P<.01). The dry matter yields increased with delaying harvest: it was 4, 027 kg at first and 5, 667 kg at second harvest(P<.01). 6. According to the results obtained from this study. it is suggested that planting date on September 1 and harvest date on November 19 would be recomendable for fall oat forage production.

Mechanization for Labor Saving in Harvesting of Potatoes (Solamum Tuberosum L.) (감자 수확의 성력 기계화)

  • The experiment is conducted to reduce the labor and production cost with the labor save of harvest if cultivating the potatoes using the machine and the results are as follows. On labor saving effect in transparent vinyl mulching, digging working hours per 10a in the case of using tractor are 60 min., fixing + turning time is 5 min. and 30sec., the time of harvest is 65 min and 30sec., digging working hours using cultivator are 99 min. and fixing +turning time is 5 min. and 30sec., but the time of hand harvesting is 990 min. and in digging labor saving effect, tractor shows 94% in the harvesting period and harvest by cultivator 90%. On non mulching cases, the harvest by tractor takes 49 min. and 30 sec. and that by cultivator does 87 min. and 30 sec., and digging labor saving effect shows 94% in the tractor harvest and 90% in the cultivator harvest. Therefore, on the operation efficiency per hour, in the case of tractor with digger vinyl mulching and non mulching show, $0.091\sim0.121ha$ and in the case of cultivator with digger both show $0.057\sim0.069ha$, so in the mechanized harvest of potatoes, the harvest by tractor with digger is the best. On the cost and labor save for harvesting the potatoes with labor saving effect, tractor shows 19 hours and 20 min./10a in vinyl mulching and 19 hours. and 54 min./10a in non mulching, so it shows the short hours for harvesting. And labor saving effect shows $42\sim45%$ in comparison with 35 hours and 21 min. $\sim35$ hours and 23 min.($123,113\sim130,613$ won) of the hand harvest, so the cost was reduced to $71,250\sim72,225$ won. On the cultivator with diggers, vinyl mulching takes 19 hours and 55 min. and non mulching 19 hours and 38 min., so the labor saving effect and cost were reduced to $14\sim44%$ ($72,675\sim73,313$ won) in comparison with the hand harvest.

Effect of the Harvest Season on the Yield and Growth of Unripe Fruit and Biennial Flowering of 'Miyagawa' Satsuma Mandarin in Open Field Cultivation (노지재배 풋귤 수확시기가 수량과 과실생육 및 다음해 착화에 미치는 영향)

  • BACKGROUND: As consumption of unripe mandarin increases, its cultivation has increased in open field cultivation areas. Because unripe mandarin must be harvested before ripening and color change, the optimum harvest time must be determined. This study investigated the effect of the harvest season on the yield of unripe fruit and biennial flowering of 'Miyagawa' satsuma mandarin. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two areas of unripe mandarin orchard were selected, and the yield, fruit growth, working time, and flowering of trees the following year were investigated. Fruit was harvested at 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 days after full bloom and at general ripening. Fruit yield of unripe mandarin increased with later harvest time from 100th to 120th day except normal ripening. The next year, biennial occurred with normal ripening and harvesting, but not at the 120th day after full bloom. At the 40th day (earliest harvest time), summer and autumn shoots were present, but not after the 100th day. The 40th day required the most harvesting time; because the time gradually decreased with later harvest, the harvest time was shortest on the 120th day, and general ripening occurred shortly after the 120th day. CONCLUSION: Harvesting of unripe mandarin 100-120 days after full bloom was ideal to reduce harvesting time, enhance yield, and enable flowering the following year.

MBE growth and magnetic properties of epitaxial FeMn2O4 film on MgO(100)

  • FeM2X4 spinel structures, where M is a transition metal and X is oxygen or sulfur, are candidate materials for spin filters, one of the key devices in spintronics. Both the Fe and M ions can occupy tetrahedral and octahedral sites; therefore, these types of compounds can display various physical and chemical properties [1]. On the other hand, the electronic and magnetic properties of these spinel structures could be modified via the control of cation distribution [2, 3]. Among the spinel oxides, iron manganese oxide is one of promising materials for applications. FeMn2O4 shows inverse spinel structure above 390 K and ferrimagnetic properties below the temperature [4]. In this work, we report on the structural and magnetic properties of epitaxial FeMn2O4 thin film on MgO(100) substrate. The reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that films were epitaxially grown on MgO(100) without the impurity phases. The valance states of Fe and Mn in the FeMn2O4 film were carried out using x-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The magnetic properties were measured by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), indicating that the samples are ferromagnetic at room temperature. The structural detail and origin of magnetic ordering in FeMn2O4 will be discussed.
