  • DNA microarray is currently the most prominent tool for investigating large-scale gene expression data. Different algorithms for measuring gene expression levels from scanned images of microarray experiments may significantly impact the following steps of functional genomic analyses. $Affymetrix^{(R)}$ recently introduced high-density microarrays and new statistical algorithms in Microarray Suit (MAS) version 5.0$^{(R)}$. Very high correlations (0.92 - 0.97) between the new algorithms and the old algorithms (MAS 4.0) across several species and conditions were reported. We found that the column-wise array correlations had a tendency to be much higher than the row-wise gene correlations, which may be much more meaningful in the following higher-order data analyses including clustering and pattern analyses. In this paper, not only the detailed comparison of the two sets of algorithms is illustrated, but the impact of the introducing new algorithms on the further clustering analysis of microarray data and of possible pitfalls in mixing the old and the new algorithms were also described.

  • We review three examples (an on-chip transmission line resonator [1], a phase-locked loop [2], and an analog-to-digital converter [3]) of design tradeoffs which can in fact be circumvented; the key in each case is that the parameters that seem to trade off with each other are actually separated in time or space. This paper is an attempt to present these designs in such a way that this common approach can hopefully be applied to other circuits. We note reader that this paper is not a new contribution, but a review in which we highlight the common theme from our published works [1-3]. We published a similar paper [4], which, however, used only two examples from [1] and [2]. With the newly added content from [3] in the list of our examples, the present paper offers an expanded scope.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of localized muscle fatigue and whole body fatigue on postural control during single-leg stance after impairment induced by heel raise and the Harvard step test. Thirty-eight university students (19 men: age, $20.1{\pm}0.2$ yrs; height, $175.0{\pm}5.23cm$; weight, $66.8{\pm}5.6kg$; body mass index, $21.8{\pm}1.7kg/m^2$, 19 women: age, $20.6{\pm}1.1yrs$ ; height, $163.6{\pm}6.7cm$; weight, $58.8{\pm}4.6kg$; body mass index, $22.0{\pm}2.2kg/m^2$) were participated in this study. Subjects performed a series of single-leg postural tasks prior to, following, and 24 hours after completing: heel raise or the Harvard step test. This study showed that the root mean squared distance and velocity in the anteroposterior and mediolateral planes of the center of pressure decreased significantly due to heel raise exercise-induced fatigue. Furthermore, the root mean squared distance in the anteroposterior and mediolateral planes, and the 95% confidence ellipse area of the center of pressure also decreased significantly 24 hours after completing the Harvard step test. In conclusion, this study showed that both heel raise exercise- and Harvard step exercise-induced fatigue affects postural control during single-leg stance in AP and ML planes. Furthermore, this study suggests that changes in the postural control strategy may have occurred after the fatigue protocols during single-leg stance. Also vision can attenuate the postural deficits associated with the fatigues. In order to clarify these results, further studies using other equipment and variables are necessary.

  • The concept of Green campus has recently become an issue with the fact that universities are classified as energy gluttons. This study clearly defines the meaning of domestic green campus, and explores the operating system of green campus and related associations. Then, it draws implications from the case of Harvard University. For the research, reports and research papers of the University are examined thoroughly, and detailed information were confirmed through visiting to the official home page and emails with authorities. The green campus support institutions of the United States are making efforts to integrate overlapping functions and create a synergy effect through internal interchange and information exchange, and substantive collaboration. Also, it is drawing active participation from students and faculties of American universities by publicizing and raising various methods of funding to manage them. The primary factors of Harvard University's success are: voluntary participation from all members, the coordinated operation of the administrative division to be the center of the green campus initiative and the cooperation of each department. Other critical factors of Harvard's success are their fundraising capability, and specialized management institution. The study has significance in that it draws applicable implications on domestic Green campus through in-depth analysis, which surpasses introduction of preceding studies.
