  • This study was initiated to evaluate the performance of methodologies to estimate the space mean speed(SMS) using the time mean speed(TMS) which was collected from the vehicle detection system(VDS) in expressways. To this end, the methodologies presented in prior studies were firstly summarized. It is very hard to achieve exact SMSs and TMSs due to mechanical and communication errors in the field. Thus, a microscopic traffic simulation model was utilized to evaluated the performance. As a result, the harmonic mean and volume-distance weighted harmonic mean were close to the SMS in the case in which the TMSs of individual vehicles were used. However, when the 30-second-interval aggregated TMS were used, the volume-distance weighted harmonic mean was outstanding. In this study, a radar detector was installed in the Joongbu expressway to collect the SMS. The trajectory of individual vehicles collected from the detector were used to calculate the SMS, which was compared with the estimates using other methodologies selected in this study. As a result, the volume-distance weighted mean was turned out to be close to the SMS. However, as the congestion becomes severe. the deviation between the two speed becomes bigger.

  • In this study, estimators which shrink towards other than the origin are developed. We discuss the harmonic mean of the observations as a reasonable center and develop estimators which shrink the MLE(${\delta}^{\circ}$) towards the harmonic mean under the loss function $L_1$. The percentage reduction of average loss(PRAL) of derived estimators compared to the usual estimator(MLE) under the loss function $L_1$ is estimated for p=4 and 8. Computer simulation shows that the risk performance of the derived estiamtors is remarkably good when the means are greater than three.

  • In this paper, we show that a complete translating soliton Σm in ℝn for the mean curvature flow is stable with respect to weighted volume functional if Σ satisfies that the Lm norm of the second fundamental form is smaller than an explicit constant that depends only on the dimension of Σ and the Sobolev constant provided in Michael and Simon [12]. Under the same assumption, we also prove that under this upper bound, there is no non-trivial f-harmonic 1-form of L2f on Σ. With the additional assumption that Σ is contained in an upper half-space with respect to the translating direction then it has only one end.

  • As a measure of the center of data, arithmetical mean, median, mode, harmonic mean and geometric mean are generally used. Students must learn qualitative aspect of average values as well as its calculation for its adequate use. As the result of the learning, they should be able to select the appropriate average value according to the characteristic of data and problem context. For this object, the historical origin and visual interpretation of average values were introduced in this paper. And to help teaching several meanings of average values, several examples including context were suggested.

  • In this paper, we propose a packet loss concealment (PLC) algorithm using pitch harmonic motion prediction and adaptive signal amplitude prediction and. The spectral motion prediction method divides the spectral motion of the previous usable frame into predetermined sub-bands to predict and restore the motion of the lost signal. In the proposed algorithm, the speech signal is classified into voiced and unvoiced sounds. In the case of voiced sounds, it is further divided into pitch harmonics using the pitch frequency to predict and restore the pitch harmonic motion of the lost frame, and for the unvoiced sound, the lost frame is restored using the spectral motion prediction method. When the continuous loss of speech frames occurs, a method of adjusting the gain using the least mean square (LMS) predictor is proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated through the objective evaluation method, PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) and was showed MOS 0.1 improvement over the conventional method.

  • Next Generation Beyond 4G/5G systems will rely on the deployment of small cells over conventional macrocells for achieving high spectral efficiency and improved coverage performance, especially for indoor and hotspot environments. In such heterogeneous networks, the expected performance gains can only be derived with the use of efficient interference coordination schemes, such as Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR), which is very attractive for its simplicity and effectiveness. In this work, femtocells are deployed according to a spatial Poisson Point Process (PPP) over hexagonally shaped, 6-sector macro base stations (MeNBs) in an uncoordinated manner, operating in hybrid mode. A newly introduced intermediary region prevents cross-tier, cross-boundary interference and improves user equipment (UE) performance at the boundary of cell center and cell edge. With tools of stochastic geometry, an analytical framework for the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) distribution is developed to evaluate the performance of all UEs in different spatial locations, with consideration to both co-tier and cross-tier interference. Using the SINR distribution framework, average network throughput per tier is derived together with a newly proposed harmonic mean, which ensures fairness in resource allocation amongst all UEs. Finally, the FFR network parameters are optimized for maximizing average network throughput, and the harmonic mean using a fair resource assignment constraint. Numerical results verify the proposed analytical framework, and provide insights into design trade-offs between maximizing throughput and user fairness by appropriately adjusting the spatial partitioning thresholds, the spectrum allocation factor, and the femtocell density.

  • The relation between output SNR and mth harmonic generation is determined for nonlinear system of zero memory type, half wave and the nth power law devices with narrow band form of the unmodulated sinusoidal wave plus zero mean and stationary gaussian noise input. It is found that the optimum generation condition for harmonic component at a small input of SNR is m and n equal 2, while for large input SNR is always n equals 2.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method to enhance the harmonic components from the frequency lines of the passive sonar signals. For this, we first separate the stable frequency lines from unstable ones using mean and difference of spectral bins in the vernier analysis. Then we emphasize the harmonic components using autocorrelation-based postprocessing, and enhance them by reducing the background noise with the split-window two pass mean algorithm. Experimental results for real underwater acoustic data are presented with our discussions.

  • This study was conducted to get reasonable and abundant hydrological time series of monthly flows simulated by a best fitting stochastic simulation model for the establishment of rational design and the rationalization of management for agricultural hydraulic structures including reservoirs. Comparative analysis carried out for both statistical characteristics and synthetic monthly flows simulated by the multi-season first order Markov model based on Gamma distribution which is confirmed as good one in the first report of this study and by Harmonic synthetic model analyzed in this report for the six watersheds of Yeong San and Seom Jin river systems. 1.Arithmetic mean values of synthetic monthly flows simulated by Gamma distribution are much closer to the results of the observed data than those of Harmonic synthetic model in the applied watersheds. 2.In comparison with the coefficients of variation, index of fluctuation for monthly flows simulated by two kinds of synthetic models, those based on Gamma distribution are appeared closer to the observed data than those of Harmonic synthetic model both in Yeong San and Seom Jin river systems. 3.It was found that synthetic monthly flows based on Gamma distribution are considered to give better results than those of Harmonic synthetic model in the applied watersheds. 4.Continuation studies by comparison with other simulation techniques are to be desired for getting reasonable generation technique of synthetic monthly flows for the various river systems in Korea.
