  • Accurate estimation of reference evapotranspiration (RET) is important to quantify crop evapotranspiration for sustainable water resource management in hydrological, agricultural, and environmental fields. It is estimated by different methods from direct measurements with lysimeters, or by many empirical equations suggested by numerous modeling using local climatic variables. The potential to use some such equations depends on the availability of the necessary meteorological parameters for calculating the RET in specific climatic conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the proper RET equations using limited climatic data and to analyze the temporal and spatial trends of the RET in South Korea. We evaluated the FAO-56 Penman-Monteith equation (FAO-56 PM) by comparing several simple RET equations and observed small fan evaporation. In this study, the modified Penman equation, Hargreaves equation, and FAO Penman-Monteith equation with missing solar radiation (PM-Rs) data were tested to estimate the RET. Nine weather stations were considered with limited climatic data across South Korea from 1973 - 2017, and the RET equations were calculated for each weather station as well as the analysis of the mean error (ME), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE). The FAO-56 PM recommended by the Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) showed good performance even though missing solar radiation, relative humidity, and wind speed data and could still be adapted to the limited data conditions. As a result, the RET was increased, and the evapotranspiration rate was increased more in coastal areas than inland.

  • In order to provide basic information for the estimation of evapotranspiration for grass (Joycia Japonica), both field lysimeter experiment and model prediction were performed to estimate daily ET Various methods were used to predict daily reference crop ET and crop coefficients. Measured mean daily ET during the 1997 growing season was 4.5mm Model predicted mean daily ET during the 1997 growing season varied from 3.6 to 4.7mm depending on the prediction model Crop coefficients varied from 0.96 to 1.27 depending on the prediction model Comparison of the seven reference crop ET prediction methods used in this study shows that the Penman-Monteith method gave the smallest ET while the Hargreaves method gave the largest ET. The crop coefficient by the corrected Penman method was 1.03, which is closest to 1.0, suggesting that this method may he the best prediction method.

  • This study compared several reference evapotranspiration estimated using eight methods such as FAO-56 Penman-Monteith (FAO PM), Hamon, Hansen, Hargreaves-Samani, Jensen-Haise, Makkink, Priestley-Taylor, and Thornthwaite. In addition, by analyzing the monthly deviations of the results by the FAO PM and the remaining seven methods, monthly optimized correction coefficients were derived and the improvement effect was evaluated. These methods were applied to 73 automated synoptic observation system (ASOS) stations of the Korea Meteorological Administration, where the climatological data are available at least 20 years. As a result of evaluating the reference evapotranspiration by applying the default coefficients of each method, a large fluctuation happened depending on the method, and the Hansen method was relatively similar to FAO PM. However, the Hamon and Jensen-Haise methods showed more large values than other methods in summer, and the deviation from FAO PM method was also large significantly. When comparing based on the region, the comparison with FAO PM method provided that the reference evapotranspiration estimated by other methods was overestimated in most regions except for eastern coastal areas. Based on the deviation from the FAO PM method, the monthly correction coefficients were derived for each station. The monthly deviation average that ranged from -46 mm to +88 mm before correction was improved to -11 mm to +1 mm after correction, and the annual average deviation was also significantly reduced by correction from -393 mm to +354 mm (before correction) to -33 mm to +9 mm (after correction). In particular, Hamon, Hargreaves-Samani, and Thornthwaite methods using only temperature data also produced results that were not significantly different from FAO PM after correction. It can be also useful for forecasting long-term reference evapotranspiration using temperature data in climate change scenarios or predicting evapotranspiration using monthly or seasonal temperature forecasted values.

  • Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) considering evapotranspiration and precipitation is generally used to quantify the drought severity. Also, Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI) has been frequently used in the arid regions which is suffering severe droughts, but drought analysis in association with RDI has been the focus of few studies in South Korea. Therefore, this study compared two meterological drought indices based on precipitation and evapotranspiration using Thornthwaite, Hargreaves, and Blaney-Criddle evaportranspiration calculation methods. Meteorological data of sixteen weather stations which are operated by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) were used to quantify drought and to compare characteristics of drought for the Han River Basin from 1992 to 2015. As a result, in case of Han River Basin, severe drought sharply increased in recent years. While the correlation coefficients are relatively high between the SPEIs and RDIs, the drought severity and year of severe drought are partially different. Therefore, it is necessary that RDI will be also measured to quantify severity and occurrence year of drought.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the evapotranspiration and variations of soil moisture contents for soybeans. The relationship between actual evapotranspiration obtained by the water balance equation and estimated evapotranspiration obtained by the soil moisture model was analyzed. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The total amount of actual evapotranspiration of soybeans during growing season was 405.7mm. The total amount of reference crop evapotranspiration of soybeans that was estimated by Pan evaporation and Hargreaves method were 547.8 mm and 586.8 mm, respectively. Crop coefficient during growing season were shown on Table 1. 2. Measured actual evapotranspiration of soybean during growing season was 405.7 mm and estimated actual evapotranspiration by pan evaporation and Hargreaves method were 424.7 mm, and 426.1mm, r3 respectively. 3. The variations of soil moisture content for soybeans were high at 10cm layer, as compared with those at 30cm and 50cm layers. Because discrepancy between the variations of soil moisture content predicted by model and observed by soil moisture meter was still great, it is required to study the consumptive types of soil moisture at each root depth.

  • The climate change caused by global warming may affect on the hydro-meteorologic factor such as evaporation (IPCC, 2001). Furthermore, it is also necessary that the effect of climate change according to geographical condition on evaporation should be studied. In this study, considering geographical and topographical conditions, the 6 evaporation equations that have been applied to simulate annual and monthly pan evaporation were compared. 56 climatologic stations were selected and classified, basing on the geographical and topographical characteristics (urbanization, topographical slope, proximity to coast, and area of water body). The evaporation equations currently being used are applied. These evaporation equations are Penman, Kohler-Nordenson-Fox (KNF), DeBruin-Keijman, Priestley-Taylor, Hargreaves, and Rohwer. Furthermore, Penman equation was modified by calibrating the parameters of wind function and was verified using relative error. The study results indicate that the KNF equation compared best with the pan: relative error was 8.72%. Penman equation provided the next-best values for evaporation relative to the pan: relative error was 8.75%. The mass-transfer method (Rohwer) provided the worst comparison showing relative error of 33.47%. In case that there is a close correlation between wind function and wind speed, modified Penman equation provided a better estimate of pan evaporation.

  • An exhibit entitled 'Revelatory Landscapes' was held at the San Francisco Museum of Modem Art from May 5 to October 14, 2001. For this Museum's rot off-site outdoor exhibition, five outstanding design teams-Kathryn Gustafson, Hargreaves Associates, Hood Design, Tom Leader Studio, and ADOBE LA-created site-specific installations in Berkeley, Oakland, San Jose, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Each project showcased a hybridization of environmental art and landscape design. The main content revealed through revelatory landscapes were the natural, cultural, and historical palimpsest of the sites-particularly as related to the history of minorities such as Native American, African Americans and Latin Americans-as well as the every day life of ordinary people. To represent these ideas, a juxtaposition of the past and the present was broadly applied. Furthermore, the use of dramatic colors, textures, and forms in consideration of materials coupled with the revelation of natural elements such as wind and sunlight accelerated the effect of this juxtaposition. Every project of the Revelatory Landscapes exhibit requires a phenomenological experience to be appreciated. Via the five senses, these experiences cause a synesthetic experience beyond solely the visual. By examining the projects of 'Revelatory landscapes', the threshold for a new blending between environmental art and landscape design as well as new landscape design strategies that overcome the dichotomy between nature and culture will change and evolve.

  • In order to provide basic information for the estimation of evapotranspiration in the ponded direct seeding paddy field, both field lysimeter experiment and model prediction were performed to estimate daily ET. Various methods were used to predict daily reference crop ET and crop coefficients. Measure4 mean daily ET during the 1995 growing season varied from 5.9 to 6.1 mm depending on the species, while it varied from 5.1 to 5.5 mm in 1996. Model predicted mean daily ET during the 1995 growing season varied from 3.9 to 4.9 mm depending on the prediction model, while it varied from 3.5 to 4.7 mm in 1996. The smaller ET values both measured and predicted in 1996 were caused by the low values of temperature, sunshine hours, and solar radiation. Crop coefficients varied from 1.20 to 1.50 in 1995 depending on the prediction model, while it varied from 1.10 to 1.47 in 1996. Comparison of the seven reference crop ET prediction methods used in this study shows that the Penman-Monteith method and the FAO-Radiation method gave the lowest ET while the corrected Penman method and the Hargreaves method gave the largest ET. Since crop coefficients vary to a large extent based on the prediction methods, reference crop ET prediction method should be carefully selected in irrigation planning.
