Extraction is a necessary element in the bioconversion of lignocellulosics to fuels and chemicals. Although various forms of chemical pretreatment of cellulosic materials have been proposed, their effectiveness varies depending on the treatment conditions and substrate. In this study, mixed hardwood (MH) and loblolly pine (LP) were pretreated with dilute acid in a 100 mL accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) at the predetermined optimal conditions: temperature: $170^{\circ}C$, acid concentration: 0.5% (w/v), and reaction time: 2~64 min. This method was highly effective for extracting the hemicellulose fraction. Total xmg (defined as the sum of xylose, mannose, and galactose) can be extracted from milled MH and LP through pressurized dilute acid treatment in maximum yields of 12.6 g/L and 15.3 g/L, respectively, representing 60.5% and 70.4% of the maximum possible yields, respectively. The crystallinity index increased upon pretreatment, reflecting the removal of the amorphous portion of biomass. The crystalline structure of the cellulose in the biomass, however, was not changed by the ASE extraction process.
A study was carried out to observe the 1% aqueous safranine solution flow speed in longitudinal and radial directions of softwood G. biloba, ring-porous wood A. altissima, and diffuse- porouswood D. kaki. In radial direction, ray cells and in longitudinal direction tracheids, vessel and wood fiber were considered for the measurement of liquid penetration speed at less than 12% moisture contents (MC). The length, lumen diameter, pit diameter, end wall pit diameter and the numbers of end wall pits determined for the flow rate. The liquid flow in the those cells was captured via video and the capillary flow rate in the ones were measured. Vessel in hardwood species and tracheids in softwood was found to facilitate prime role in longitudinal penetration. Radial flow speed was found highest in ray parenchyma of G. biloba. Anatomical features like the length and diameter, end-wall pit numbers of ray parenchyma were found also responsible fluid flow differences. On the other hand, vessel and fiber structure affected the longitudinal flow of liquids. Therefore, the average liquid penetration depth in longitudinal tracheids of G. biloba was found the highest among all cells considered in D. kaki and A. altissima.
The objective of this research was to develop habitat suitability models for wild boar (Sus Scrafa) in Mt. Sulak National Park and Mt. Jumbong Natural Forest Reserve. The study area is covered-with climax temperate hardwood forests ot'mainly Mongolian oak ($\textit{Quercus mongolica}$), and has diverse wildlife species including wild boars. Three suitability models - summer, fall, and annual models - were developed. These models were based on slope, aspect, forest types, forest year classes, distance from streams and trails. Habitat data collected through telemetry were used for the models. The accuracy of the models was tested by comparing observed traces of wild boar in Mt. Jurnbong, and most traces were on suitable areas on the suitability maps.
The harvesting and export of Canadian ginseng from the cool, shady hardwood forests of southern Canada can be traced to 1796. Because of its high dollar value and diminishing woodland supplies it was decided in 1896 that it should be cultivated under wood lath screens. Present day economics dictate changes in production techniques to allow for a decreasing supply of expensive labour. Traditional wooden lath screens have a surface area of wood of 70 per cent and permit light penetration of only about 18 per cent. Experimental woven black polypropylene shade has an estimated surface area of 72 per cent and permits light pentration of about 28 per cent. While differences in air and leaf temperatures under the two shade structures can be measured it is doubtful if these are great enough to cause differences in plant growth under the two structures. Shade grown ginseng had a low fresh and dry weight and total chlorophyll content (ratio of a to b was 3 to 1) comparable to other shade species. There was no differences in fresh and dry weight and chlorophyll content of leaves from plants grown under the two shade structures. Maximum net photosynthesis of leaves was 0.175 g $CO_2\;m^{-2}\;hr^{-1}$ and light saturation level was about $200{\mu}E\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1},$ or about 10 per cent of full sunlight.

This study is conducted to investigate the factors affecting lumber conversion rate of sawmill industry in South Korea. Data were obtained from the survey of 38 sawmills in all geographic regions of South Korea. The variables examined in this study were region, softwood/hardwood log, domestic/imported/both log, the number of power-driven carriages (PDC) installed, the year when and country where PDCs was manufactured, the horse power of PDC, the number of labors required to operate each PDC, the sawing capacity of mill (mill size), and the types of major product and by-products. The lumber recovery factor (LRF) of sawmills were significantly influenced by the origin of logs, level of PDC automation, sawmill size, and size of logs (measured in diameter and length) while not by the location of the mill, types of major product and by-product, log species, and characteristics of PDC. Although these results provide useful information for understanding the technological characteristics of the Korean sawmill industry, further investigation with larger sample is necessary to reveal the more reliable characteristics of sawmill industry in South Korea.
This study was carried out to estimate long-term demand functions, and to project consumption of roundwood to the year 2030, using time series data for the period 1970-1990. Especially, the unique features of this study are in the estimation of demand functions for roundwood by species group and by end-use with help of dummy variables. It also, attempts to show how dummy variables can be utilized for improving the estimation result. The result of this study reveals that hardwood roundwood consumption is being substituted by softwood roundwood due to the rapid increase in the relative price of softwood, and this trend is expected to continue in the near future. The consumption of roundwood by mining industry is projected to fall as the coal :mining is expected to decline. The parametric estimates of timber demand function by species group and by end-use indicate that the demand for timber in Korea is more responsive to the performance of domestic economy as a whole, represented by GDP in this study, than to other variables such as own and substitute prices. The effects of population growth and substitute prices could not be determined.
The present study was conducted to investigate photosynthetic responses and growth performances of Liriodendron tulipifera, Betula costata, and Carpinus cordata seedlings growing under four different light regimes (full sun and 54~65%, 26~37%, 8~13% of full sun). L. tulipifera and B. costata showed the highest photosynthesis rate of 13.59, $16.29{\mu}mol\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, respectively, at full sun. And photosynthesis ability and growth performances were decreased as increasing shade level in the above two species. C. cordata showed the highest photosynthesis rate of $9.47{\mu}mol\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ at 26~37% of full sun. Also, growth performances of height, root collar diameter, and biomass showed the results similar to photosynthetic responses presented in C. cordata.
We analyzed the basic characteristics and adsorption property of carbonized materials from thinning byproducts of major Korean wood species for evaluating as charcoal making raw material. Yield of charcoal was decreased with increasing the carbonization temperature for all wood species. Refining degrees was 9.0 at $400^{\circ}C$, 3.3~5.0 at $600^{\circ}C$ and 0 at $800^{\circ}C$, and was no difference among wood species. With increasing the carbonization temperature, the fixed carbon content was also increased, and charcoal from softwoods had more fixed carbon content than that from hardwoods. Specific surface area was increased with increasing the carbonization temperature, softwood charcoal had more specific surface area than that of hardwood. Pinus rigida showed the highest specific surface area. In formaldehyde removal by charcoal, some materials had highest at $600^{\circ}C$ and the others had highest at $800^{\circ}C$. Pinus koraiensis, Qurcus acutissima and MDF showed maximum formaldehyde removal ability at $600^{\circ}C$. Ethylene gas removal ability of charcoal was increased with increasing the carbonization temperature, and the charcoal from Pinus rigida and Robinia pseudoacacia had higher ethylene gas removal ability than the other species.

Anatomical characteristics of White Jabon (Arthocephalus cadamba) and Red Jabon (Arthocephalus macrophyllus) were investigated by IAWA hardwood feature list. Both species were diffuse-porous, and radial multiple pore with 2~3 rows was mostly observed. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina was 100 to $200{\mu}m$, and vessels per square millimeter were 5 to 20. White Jabon has more vessels than Red Jabon. The number of solitary pore per square millimeter in both species was similar, but more pore multiple was observed in White Jabon. Axial parenchyma diffuse was observed in both species, but axial parenchyma of White Jabon was hardly identified on the cross section. Rays were classified into "body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright/square marginal cells" type and partly "all ray cells upright and/or square" type on radial section. Ray width 1 to 3 cells and 1 to 2 cells observed in White Jabon and Red Jabon, respectively. Ray height of White Jabon was $420{\mu}m$ and Red Jabon $474{\mu}m$. Fiber length was the range of 900 to $1,600{\mu}m$ in both species, and it showed a tendency to increase from pith to bark. Consequently, it is considered that pore multiple, ray width and axial parenchyma are to be suggested the keys for identification of both species.
The natural regeneration pattern was evaluated for 11 useful hardwood species in the natural deciduous forest where three different silvicultural practices (two-storied system, shelterwood system, and selection system) were applied and passed by three growing seasons. The study forest was presently dominated by Quercus mongolica in the upper canopy. However, since the analysis indicated that the number of regenerated seedlings of Acer mono and Fraxinus rhynchophylla was fairly abundant enough, these two species were anticipated to have the possibility to be among dominant species along with Quercus mongolica. The results of seedling occurrence after regenerating cutting showed that the number of seedlings was estimated for 3,145/ha(10 times of overstory) in the two-storied system, 6,885/ha(9 times of overstory) in the shelterwood system, and 2,275/ha(4 times of overstory) in the selection system. The estimation was varied by species, and the number of stump sprout was more abundant. The proportion of seedlings was high in 60~80% of overstory density and 60~70% of understory coverage, and high in the site of less than $25^{\circ}$ of slope and from southwest to northwest of aspect. These results were still varied by species. Stump diameter and height had little influence on the occurrence of sprout.
