  • The wear between piston ring face and cylinder liner is an extremely unpredictable and hard-to-reproduce phenomenon that significantly decreases engine performance. This study will discuss characteristics of wear between hard and soft piston ring coatings with running surface of cylinder liner. Detailed tribological analysis by using Pin-on-Disk(POD) testing machine describes the lubricity mechanism between piston ring coatings and cylinder liner at different temperature with and without oil. The effect of surface roughness of the cylinder liner on the friction coefficient and wear amount of piston ring coatings will also be analyzed. To simulate scuffing mechanism between piston ring and cylinder liner, accelerated lab testing was performed. This study will provide the data from tribological testing of hard and soft piston ring coatings against cylinder liner. Furthermore, the microstructures and morphological features of the surface and the near-surface materials during wear will be investigated. From the scuffing test by using POD testing machine, scuffing mechanisms for the soft and hard coating will be analyzed and experimentally confirmed.

  • Amorphous carbon nitride (a-C:N) multilayerfilms are formed by using altermating conditions during film deposition in are ion plating process. Because hard a-C:N films prepared with suitable megative bias voltages have large compressive stress, it is difficult to increase film thickness more than 200nm. Preparing multilayer films composed of hard layers and soft layers, we can grow thick multilayer films on Si and SKH steel substrate. The total thickness of multilayer films is more than 1$\mu\textrm{m}$. The multilayer films are several times thicker than the single layer films and almost equal in hardness and internal stress to the single layer ones. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and Raman spectroscopy reveal that multilayer films equal to single layer films in structure, which is similar to the structure of DLC films.

  • The silane coupling agent, 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (${\gamma}$-MPTS), was grafted on the surface of alumina nanoparticles. We used the surface modified nanoparticles in the hard coating layer for in-mold decoration (IMD) foils and evaluated the coating properties such as hardness and anti-abrasion property. The effects of electron beam (EB) irradiation on color layer and anchor layer of IMD foils were observed through the difference in color and the cross-cut tape test, respectively. Also, cure kinetics as studied quantitatively under various reaction temperatures by analysis of surface properties and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. From these results, we constructed database for the commercial exploitation of EB curing system.

  • In recent years the recording density of hard disks has increased significantly largely due to the decreasing flying height. As a result of decreased flying height, the reliability issue become more critical. In this work the relationship between hard disk surface damage and data loss was investigated by using an actual hard disk drive. The purpose of this research was to identify the key factor which leads to data loss. It was shown that data loss is directly related to the physical damage of the Co-magnetic layer and there was no data loss when only carbon protective coating was damaged by the diamond tip.

  • Statement of problem : Implant screw loosening remains a problem in implant prosthodontics. Some abutment screws with treated surfaces were introduced to prevent screw loosening and to increase preload. DLC(Diamond Like Carbon) film has similar properties on hardness, wear resistance, chemical stability, biocompatibility as real diamond materials. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of lubricant layer on abutment screw and to discriminate more effective method between soft lubricant and hard lubricant to prevent screw loosening. Material and method : In this study, $1{\mu}m$ thickness DLC was used as protective, lubricating layer of titanium screws and 3 times removal torque was measured on the abutment screws to investigate the difference in 10 coated and 10 non-coated abutment screws. Results : The results indicated that the implants with DLC coating group were not more resistant to the applied force in screw loosening. At 32Ncm, the 3 times removal torque in DLC group were $27.75{\pm}2.89,\;25.85{\pm}2.35$ and $26.2{\pm}2.57$. The removal torque in no-coated abutment screws were $27.85{\pm}4.23,\;27.35{\pm}2.81$ and $27.9{\pm}2.31$, respectively. Conclusion : The lubricant layer used in this study was Diamond Like Carbon(DLC) and it have a properties of hard and stable layer. The DLC coating layer was hard enough to prevent distortion of screws in the repeated unscrewing procedure in clinical situation. The reduced friction coefficient in hard DLC layer was not effective to prevent screw loosening.

  • Corrosion of the disk has been an ongoing concern for the manufacturers of hard disk drives. With the advent of magnetoresistive (MR) head, very low levels of corrosion and contamination become more critical since the raised defects and corrosion products on the disk surface-anything that heats the MR sensor due to the contact-can distort the output signal of the head. This phenomenon is called as thermal asperity. In this paper, the effect of corrosion as a form of Co migration on the occurrence of thermal asperity in MR drives was investigated. The corrosion test at high temperature (60$^{\circ}C$) and high relative humidity (80%) was emphasized in this study and the testing results at ambient condition were compared. The corrosion on the disks was characterized as the amount of Co ion migration using an ion chromatography (IC) and a time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS). It is proved that corrosion on the disk surface after storage testing is closely correlated to the amount of Co ions migration from the magnetic layer to disk surfaces and higher Co migration causes more thermal asperities in the drive. In order to reduce Co migration, several methods such as burnishing process and structure of the carbon overcoat were investigated. It is found that the hydrogenated carbon overcoat shows the least Co migration among different types of overcoat layer. However, the most effective way to reduce Co migration is the application of Cr layer between the overcoat and the magnetic alloy layer.

  • This study aims at the development of computer program for the deformation analysis of soft ground, and using this computer program, study the constraint effect of deformation heaving, lateral displacement of the soft ground reinforced with improvement of soft ground up to hard strata, under intact state(natural). The following results are obtained. 1. Improvement of soft ground to the hard strata works well against the settlement of neighboring ground. 2. the larger the rigidity or width of improvement of layer to hard strata is, the less settlement occurs. 3. Improvement of soft ground to the hard strata is of no use.

  • Vascular leiomyomas are benign tumors of smooth muscle origin arising from the muscularis layer of blood vessel walls. They can occur anywhere in the body where smooth muscle is found and usually occur in the lower extremity as a slow-growing, firm, occasionally painful mass. However they are rare in the head and neck and very rare in hard palate. Here we report a case of a vascular leiomyoma presenting as a soft mass of the hard palate and review the literatures.

  • LED modules, based on MCPCB with a hard barrier oxide layer and an improved thermal dissipation property, are presented. Reflecting cups were also formed on the surface of the MCPCB such that optical coupling between neighboring chips was minimized for improving the photon absorption loss. LED chips were directly attached on the MCPCB by using the COB (Chip On Board) scheme. The LED modules showed significantly enhanced light outputs, compared to the LED modules based on conventional MCPCBs.
