  • Recently high voltage impulse (HVI) technique has been extensively studied for desalting processes to control the $CaCO_3$ scale formation in industrial water practices such as power plant, boiler, and heat exchange operations. Investigation of the operational parameters for the HVI is important, however, those had not been reported yet. In this study, the effect of initial feed volume and contact time on reduction of calcium ion concentration by the HVI technique was investigated. Initial feed volumes of artificial hard water which contained 100 mg/L of $Ca^{2+}$, were set to 1, 2, and 3 L respectively. After 24hr of HVI contact with 12kV, $Ca^{2+}$ ion was reduced to 50, 29 and 19 % of their initial concentration, indicating that calcium removal increased as initial feed volume decreased. This implies the applied HVI pulse energy per unit mass of calcium is important parameter determining overall desalting efficiency. A series of extended operations of HVI up to 30 days verified the long term stability of the HVI system. The calcium ion declined to 40 mg/L after 2~3 days, and further reduction of calcium was not achieved, indicating that optimum operation time could be 2~3 days under these experimental conditions. Consequently, it was confirmed that the important operational parameter of HVI technique is initial feed volume and contact time as well as the applied voltage that was already proven in the previous study.

  • Abrasive wear between piston ring face and cylinder liner is an extremely unpredictable and hard-to-reproduce phenomenon that significantly decreases engine performance. Wear by abrasion are forms of wear caused by contact between a particle and solid material. Abrasive wear is the loss of material by the passage of hard particles over a surface. From the pin-on-disk test, particle dent test and scuffing test, abrasive wear characteristics of diesel engine cylinder liner-piston ring have been investigated. Pin-on-disk test results indicate that abrasive wear resistance is not simply related to the hardness of materials, but is influenced also by the microstructure, temperature, lubricity and micro- fracture properties. In particle dent test, dent resistance stress decreases with increasing temperature. From the scuffing test by using pin-on-disk tester, scuffing mechanisms for the soft coating and hard coating were proposed and experimentally confirmed.

  • Hertzian crack suppression phenomena and relatively high damage tolerance were investigated in hard/soft silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) bilayers. Coarse $\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder was wsed for the hard coating layer and fine $\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder was used for the soft substrate layer. The two layers were designed with a strong interface. Hertzian indentation was used to investigate contact fracture and damage tolerance property. Hertzian crack suppression has occurred with increasing applied load and decreasing coating thickness. The crack suppression contributed strength improvement, especially in the bilayers with thinner coatings. Ultimately, the combination of hard coating with soft but tough underlayer improved the damage tolerance of brittle $Si_3N_4$ ceramics.

  • We suggest here a cost-effective replica fabrication method for transparent and hard molds for imprinting lithography such as NIL and S-FIL. The process starts with the use of a replica hard mold from a master, using a polymer copy as a carrier. The polymer copy as a carrier was treated by soluble process for forming anti-adhesion layer. Duplicated hard molds can eliminate direct contact between a hard master and a patterned polymer on a substrate and the generated contamination of a master during the imprinting process. The replica hard mold exhibits the glass-like properties introduced here, such as transparency and hardness, make it appropriate for nanoimprint lithography and step-and-flash imprint lithography.

  • Load/Unload(L/UL) technology includes the benefits, that is, increased areal density, reduced power consumption and improved shock resistance contrary to contact start stop(CSS). It has been widely used in portable hard disk drive and will become the key technology for developing the small form factor hard disk drive. The main objectives of L/UL are no slider disk contact or no media damage. For realizing those, we must consider many design parameters in L/UL systems. In this paper, we focus on the effect of the ramp profile. We can find out the lateral velocities in L/UL process through experiments and simulations for force of voice coil motor and friction force on ramp. And then, we will gain the optimal design of ramp slope to maintain the minimum clearance of suspension dimple and slider with FE model. In special, after finding the point at which air bearing breaks and designing the ramp, we will identify the results for improving unload performance.

  • Stick-slip friction is one of the material removal mechanisms in tribology. It occurs when the static friction force is larger than the dynamic friction force, and make the friction curve fluctuated. In the friction monitoring of chemical mechanical polishing(CMP), the friction force also vibrates just as stick-slip friction. In this paper, an attempt to show the similarity between stick-slip friction and the friction of CMP was conducted. The prepared hard pa(IC1000/Suba400 stacked/sup TM/) and soft pad(Suba400/sup TM/) were tested with SiO₂ slurry. The friction force was measured by piezoelectric sensor. According to this experiment, it was shown that as the head and table velocity became faster, the stick-slip time shortened because of the change of real contact area. And, the gradient of stick-slip period as a function of head and table speed in soft pad was more precipitous than that of hard one. From these results, it seems that the fluctuating friction force in CMP is stick-slip friction caused by viscoelastic behavior of the pad and the change of real contact area.

  • The optimum design against contact crack initiation is investigated to find major parameters in designing desirable surface-coated asymmetric layered components. Hard ceramic coated soft materials with various elastic modulus mismatch are prepared for the analysis. Spherical indentation is conducted for producing contact cracks from the surface or interface between the coating and the substrate layer. A finite element analysis of the stress fields in the loaded layer components enables a direct correlation between the damage patterns and the stress distributions. Implications concerning the design of asymmetric layered components indicate that the coating thickness and the elastic modulus mismatch are important parameters for designing layered component to prevent the initiation of contact cracks.

  • Hard disk drive(HDD) consists of a head/slider system which flies over the magnetic disk at an extremely low height. As the density of HDD increases the flying height of the head needs to be decreased. This increases the chance for contact between the slider and the disk. This paper addresses some key issues related to surface failure characteristics of HDD. It is shown that flying behavior of the slider during contact-start-stop cycle can be analyzed based on different regimes of air film lubrication, experimental methods for identifying the underlying mechanisms and improving the reliability of HDD are discussed.

TOF-SIMS 분석은 C 와 $C_2F_5$의 세기에 있어서 감소를 드러냈고 이것은 코팅 표면에 윤활제 요소의 마모를 확실시 할수 있는 결과로 나타났다.

  • The role of disk clamp is to fasten disks to motor and to prevent the slip of disks during operation. This paper examined the effects of the design parameters of disk clamp - thickness, contact radius and cross-sectional shape -on the clamping force and circumferential stress distribution of disk. The large stress variation in circumferential direction results in large disk waveness and will increase repeatable run-out (RRO) finally. The disk clamp-disk-disk spacer system is modeled and the FE analysis is performed by ANSYS. The disk clamp with large contact radius shows more uniform stress distribution than the one with small contact radius and the stiffness variation around circumferential direct ion or the addition of the bending sect ion can make stress distribution uniform.
