Water quality management of Jeiu Harbor using material cycle model(II) - Characteristics of water quality in Jeiu harbor and the estimation of pollutant loadings - (물질순환모델을 이용한 제주항의 수질관리(II) - 제주항의 수질 특성과 오염부하량 산정 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of water quality in Jeju harbor and to estimate pollutant loadings discharged into Jeju Harbor. To know characteristics of water quality in Jeju harbor, and pollutant loadings of Sanzi river, we have investigated from August, 2000 to May, 2001. The results showed that the concentrations of COD, DIN and DIP were in the range of 1.00∼4.85 mg/L (mean 2.15 mg/L), 2.14∼74.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$-at/L(mean 12.20 $\mu\textrm{g}$-at/L) and 0.52∼4.00 $\mu\textrm{g}$-at/L(mean 1.18 $\mu\textrm{g}$-at/L), respectively. These values were under III class of seawater quality criteria. The ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus was lower than 16 except for Station 1 in Jeju harbor. Therefore, nitrogen was playing an important role in phytoplankton growth as limiting factor in Jeju harbor. The mean values of eutrophication index were exceeding 1, which was the eutrophication criteria. The results of estimating pollutant loadings at Sanzi river are 0.30 ton/day for COD, 300 kg/day for DIN and 18.0 kg/day for DIP, respectively.

Behavior of Currents and Suspended Sediments around a Silt Screen

  • The behavior of Suspended Sediment Concentrations (SSC) around a silt screen in a microtidal coastal area was hydrodynamically measured. The current speed at the mid-layer about 30m downstream of the screen reduces to about half that at the same distance upstream. It was caused by the contraction of the vertical section due to the screen. Even during a relatively weak storm period the SSC increases to that of the value caused by dredging. Section-averaged SSC at the downstream of the screen is higher by about 60% than that at the upstream, suggesting that the silt screen plays an adverse effect rather than a constructive role in the reduction of SSC generated by dredging.

  • Sediment plumes arising from various coastal works can cause detrimental effects on the coastal ecosystem in various manners. Although the most active countermeasure against the plumes is to restrict the works to specified time periods known as environmental windows (Reine et al., 1998), silt screens have been widely used for reducing the spreading of suspended sediments (SS) generated by coastal works. Prediction of a Flushing Rate in an Embayment System for Construction of an Environmentally Sound Harbor (환경친화적 항만건설을 위한 항내 희석률 예측)

  • This paper presents a novel method to predict a flushing rate in an embayment system, which can be utilized to assess an environmental impact caused by harbor construction. The method was successfully applied to the Ulsan-Onsan coastal area. The flushing rate was computed on the basis of water quality changes predicted by US Army Corps of Engineers' RMA-2/RMA-4 models. After calibration and verification to the measured tidal elevation and current velocity, the model was used to estimate the flushing rate in the proposed harbor. The water quality was simulated for 96 hours and the flushing rate was computed. The results indicated that the proposed harbor would significantly reduce the flushing rate in the Onsan harbor, especially at the small embayment area near the south breakwater. The flushing rate was evaluated for several alternatives, of which the tidal flow channel of 1,000 $m^2$ in the south pier appeared to be the best mitigation measure. This study proposes that the prediction of flushing rate would be a novel method to assess a water quality impact caused by harbor construction.

  • In order to improve inefficient and unproductive factors and in response to criticisms of the failure in harbor privatization introduced in 1997, the Korean government introduced the Port Authority system, which is commonly adopted in advanced harbors in the world. This research examined the theoretical background of harbor management system and various cases of harbor management in foreign countries. The desirable introduction of Port Authority system must be preceded by the settlement of problems in harbor structure and operation. In addition, the Port Authority Act, which restricts the autonomy of harbor corporations, should be improved for user-centered Port Authority system. Strategies for the successful introduction of Incheon Port Authority are as follows. Firstly it is required to establish consumer-centered harbor operation system. The second requirement is to activate the harbor logistics industry through the development of nearby logistic complexes led by Port Authority and, by doing so, to promote the development of local economy. Thirdly it is essential to lay the foundation of mutual prosperity through developing profitable businesses by linking localities and harbors, and to suggest a crisis control network for Port Authority and local self-governing bodies to cope jointly with crises in logistics and natural disasters.

Analysis on the Characteristics of the Infra-Gravity Waves inside and outside Pohang New Harbor using a Transfer Function Model (전달함수 모형을 이용한 포항신항 내·외의 외중력파 특성 분석)

  • Infra-gravity waves (IGWs) with a period of 1~3 minutes are a factor that directly influences the motion analysis of moored ships inside a harbor and longshore sediment transport analysis. If significant levels of IGWs from far seas are transferred to a harbor and amplified, they may cause downtime of large ships and induce economic loss. In this study, transfer characteristics of the IGWs intruding from outside to inside Pohang New Harbor were analyzed using statistical analysis and transfer function of wave data measured at both outside and inside the harbor for around 5 years. Transfer characteristic analysis was limited to events where IGWs had wave heights above 0.1 m. The wave height distribution of inside the harbor was similar to that of outside the harbor, while the wave period variance of the former was larger than that of the latter. The parameters of the transfer function was optimally estimated according to each event. The estimated average RMS error of the wave height inside the harbor was around 0.013 m. The estimated parameters had a strong correlation with the linear combination information of IGW wave height, period, and direction (R = 0.95). The transfer function suggested in this study can quickly and easily estimate information on IGWs inside the harbor using IGW information predicted beforehand, and is expected to reduce damage due to unexpected restrictions on harbor usage.

  • The Gramene database (http://www.gramene.org) is a powerful online resource for agricultural researchers, plant breeders and educators that provides easy access to reference data, visualizations and analytical tools for conducting cross-species comparisons. Learn the benefits of using Gramene to enrich your lectures, accelerate your research goals, and respond to your organismal community needs. Gramene's genomes portal hosts browsers for 44 complete reference genomes, including crops and model organisms, each displaying functional annotations, gene-trees with orthologous and paralogous gene classification, and whole-genome alignments. SNP and structural diversity data, available for 11 species, are displayed in the context of gene annotation, protein domains and functional consequences on transcript structure (e.g., missense variant). Browsers from multiple species can be viewed simultaneously with links to community-driven organismal databases. Thus, while hosting the underlying data for comparative studies, the portal also provides unified access to diverse plant community resources, and the ability for communities to upload and display private data sets in multiple standard formats. Our BioMart data mining interface enable complex queries and bulk download of sequence, annotation, homology and variation data. A Two-dimensional Hydraulic Analysis Considering the Influence of River Inflow and Harbor Gate in the Bay (Harbor Gate와 유입하천의 영향을 고려한 만내의 2차원 수리해석)

  • In this study, when seawall or harbor gate is installed for coastal disaster prevention, a two-dimensional water analysis in the bay is carried out to consider the flood amount of river inflow and effect of harbor gate. The Yeongsan river and the port Mokpo area are selcected for the study region. Then, by analyzing the hydraulic characteristics of flood flow of the Yeongsan river, we analysed the compatibility of the results in the two-dimensional hydrodynamic model. A tw-odimensional water analysis were conducted for the four cases considering whether a harbor gate is installed or not, and whether the inland water boundary condition is considered or not, also with open sea boundary condition. The results of the two-dimensional water analysis shows that water level change near the port Mokpo area is mainly caused by the discharge of the estuary barrage of the Yeongsan river because the harbor gate was installed. In addition, it is revealed that the volume of reservoir created by the harbor gate and the estuary barrage is too much small compared to the volume of the discharge from the Yeongsan river. Therefore, when the harbor gate is installed in the open sea, we concluded that a flexible management between the harbor gate and the estuary barrage of the Yeongsan river is required. A initial water level of the bay and outflow from the harbor gate are proposed for disaster prevention in the coastal area of port Mokpo.

The Numerical Simulation of Harbor Calmness by Finite Element Method (유한요소법에 의한 항만 정온도의 수치모의)

  • In this paper, a finite element method is applied to the numerical calculation of the harbor calmness. The mild stop equation as the basic equation is used. The key of this model is that the bottom friction and boundary absorption are imposed. A numerical result is presented and compared with the results obtained from the other numerical analysis. These results are in very well agreement. This method calculating the calmness can be broadly utilized making the new design of harbor and fishing port in the future.
