A recently proposed method for stabilizing haptic interfaces and teleoperation systems was tested with a 'PHANToM' commercial haptic device. The 'Passivity Observer' (PO) and 'Passivity Control1er' (PC) stabilization method was applied to stabilize the system but also excited a high frequency mode in the device. To solve this problem, we propose a method to use a timevarying desired energy threshold instead of fixed zero energy threshold for the PO, and make the actual energy input follow the timevarying energy threshold. With the time-varying energy threshold, we make the PC control action smooth without sudden impulsive behavior by distributing the dissipation. The proposed new PO/PC approach is applied to PHANToM with high stiffness (K = 5000N/m), and stable and smooth contact is guaranteed. Resetting and active environment display problems also can be solved with the reference energy following idea.
In this paper, analysis, design, control and prototype construction of a wearable wire-driven haptic interface called HapticPen is discussed. This device can be considered as a wire driven parallel mechanism which three wires are attached to a pen-tip. Wire tensions are provided utilizing three DC servo motors which are attached to a solid frame on the user's body. This device is designed as input as well as output device for a wearable PC. User can write letters or figures on a virtual plate in space. Pen-tip trajectory in space is calculated using motor encoders and force feedback resulting from contact between pen and virtual plate is provided for constraining the pen-tip motion onto the virtual plane that can be easily setup by arbitrary non-collinear three points in space. In this paper kinematic model, workspace analysis, application analysis, control and prototype construction of this device are presented. Preliminary experiments on handwriting in space show feasibility of the proposed device in wearable environments.

In this paper, we propose the haptic system for the real-time virtual environment-control, which controls the sense of sight, hearing and touch. In order to maintain the stable haptic system in this study, we apply the proxy force rendering algorithm and the real-time graphic deformation algorithm based on the FEM. The applied proxy algorithm makes the system possible to be more stable and prompt with a virtual object. Moreover, the haptic rendering algorithm is applied to work out a problem that the tactual transaction-period is different from the graphic transaction- period. The graphic deformation algorithm is developed in the real-time using the deformed FEM. To apply the FEM, a deformed material-model is produced and then the graphic deformation with this model is able to force. Consequently, the graphic rendering algorithm is deduced by the real-time calculation and simplification because the purpose of this system is to transact in the real time. Applying this system to the PC, we prove that it is possible to deform the graphics and transact the haptic. Finally we suggest the variable simulation program to show the efficiency of this system.
Recently, many auto makers and OEM are now developing various telematics control units(TCU). TCU has an embedded OS and many user-friendly services inherently and frequently the driver operates the TCU on driving a car. Although the TCU has some accident resistive functions, secondhand accidental problem arose. Current Korean domestic TCUs have some interfaces such as push-button, touch screen, voice recognition and etc. But, because of operational complexity, technical limitation, it has not sufficient user-friendly interface. In this paper, to overcome this problem, haptic devices are considered. We present haptic devices and applications on the basis of that of U.S. Immersion co. and also BMW's iDrive technology.
This paper presents the haptic rendering algorithm which gives the feel information to the operator by manipulating a virtual tool with a haptic device in the simulated environment. The movement of a virtual tool grasped by the operator, which is modeled as a square is displayed in the graphic screen of a computer and the virtual environment is modeled as deformable thin film. When the tool contacts with the virtual environment, the operator is forced to feel the contact and the feature of the deformed virtual environment through the torque control of th haptic device. Contact situations are modeled as close as to the reality considering friction, elasticity and multiple contacts. Several experiments are conducted and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is confirmed.
In recent years, the increase of secondary controls within vehicles requires a mechanism to integrate various controls into a single device. This paper presents control performance of an integrated magnetorheological (MR) haptic device which can adjust various in-vehicle comfort instruments. As a first step, the MR fluid-based haptic device capable of both rotary and push motions within a single device is devised as an integrated multi-functional instrument control device. Under consideration of the torque and force model of the proposed device, a magnetic circuit is designed. The proposed MR haptic device is then manufactured and its field-dependent torque and force are experimentally evaluated. Furthermore, an inverse model compensator is synthesized under basis of the Bingham model of the MR fluid and torque/force model of the device. Subsequently, haptic force-feedback maps considering in-vehicle comfort functions are constructed and interacts with the compensator to achieve a desired force-feedback. Control performances such as reflection force are experimentally evaluated for two specific comfort functions.

In this work, 4-DOF ER haptic master is proposed and integrated with a slave robot for minimally invasive surgery(MIS). Using a controllable ER fluid, the haptic master can generate a repulsive force/torque with the 4-DOF motion. For realization of master-slave robot system, the motion command of the haptic master is realized by slave surgery robot. In order to follow the 4-DOF motion of the haptic master, novel mechanism of slave surgery robot with gimbal joint is devised. Accordingly, the haptic master-slave robot system is established by incorporating the slave robot with the haptic master device in which the desired repulsive force/torque and position are transferred to each other via wireless communications. In order to obtain the desired force/torque and position trajectories, tracking controllers for haptic master and slave robot are designed and implemented, respectively. It has been demonstrated that the desired effective torque tracking control performance is well achieved using the proposed haptic master-slave robot system.
