In this paper, we try to verify a normative module based house design procedure consisted of several sequential steps. The first step is to suggest formalization of designing so that we could clarify each phase and operation we are adopting in our design process. The second step is the clearing up the conceptual schema of traditional skills that we adopt and utilize from traditional Hanok framing techniques. The third step is to formulate adequate modular kits for the assembly of house design solutions for the schematic, conceptual and preliminary phases of designing. The fourth step is to implementing our ideas and methods to a proper computational platform such as Unity3D. The final step is to verify our symbolic descriptions of design formalization with the output of our experiments so that we have better understanding of design reasoning characteristics such as in house design.

This research aimed to suggest a standard design that reflects Hanok design tendency, and present a selective design that can fulfill a building owner's intention beyond the simple function of building permit or report. In addition, this research attempted to become a standard by establishing a criterion in calculating the measurements of section design or primary framework members, in order to be a guideline for designing Hanok in different sizes and forms. The results are as follows. The building area of Hanok standard design was set to be below $85m^2$, with a straight type of $83.16m^2$ and an L-shape of $84.24m^2$. By dividing the plane into a straight type and L-shape, two straight types were suggested: 'general type' and 'large living room type.' The upper floor space, along with the main room and small room, was proposed as an option to be changed into a room where an underfloor heating is installed depending on the building owner's intention. In addition, a criterion for side design and calculation of framework measurements was suggested and applied, while a five-girder design without high pillars was suggested for material-assembling structure. Two types of pillars-circumference and square cylinder-were proposed for the building owner to choose from, and a pointed beam house and ikgong(orthogonally-projected bracket) house were suggested for pojak bracket structure so either of them could be chosen according to the building owner's taste and economic condition. Finally, the sectional size of main materials were divided according to the form of pojak bracket structure to be proposed.
The purpose of this study is to propose a method of developing an improved Hanok. To achieve this, an investigation was carried out on the factors of the main floor plan in the improved Hanok development and an interview was conducted with residents who live in the improved Hanok development. The conclusions obtained through this study are as follows: First, The shape of 一 was marked at the highest in the Korean traditional plan types such as 一, ㄱ and 田. It is considered that this reduces the cost of construction by simplifying the structure of the roof. Second, the size was consisted of $5{\times}3$ Kan, the Korean traditional module that determines the number of columns and expresses the position of the inner wall. However, the Kan measure ments for the bathroom and multi-purpose room differed. Third, 57.6% of the 2 bedroom units were investigated. However, 60% of the residents preferred 3 bedroom units. Fourth, the results of the relationship between the living room and the kitchen showed that the residents preferred L+DK type to LDK type by 54.2% and 45.8% respectively. Fifth, the residents preferred a bathroom constructed next to the bedroom because they considered that the improved Hanok development would be used as an Inn during holiday periods. Moreover, they desired a plan where the bathroom could be directly entered from the outside. Sixth, the design for the improved Hanok development should have a suitable multipurpose-room because 72.5% of the residents have extended their house to accommodate such a room. Seventh, 61% of the improved Hanok units had an entrance space, which does not exist in Korean traditional houses. For this reason, the Korean traditional floor (: the Maru) was avoided due to its inconvenience.

A comprehensive research effort in order to develop and disseminate modernized Korean housing (Hanok) has recently been initiated by Korean government. This large scale research project encompasses a wide spectrum of housing development including public policy, architectural plans, modules, construction materials and methods, prefabricated assemblies, automated production, construction management, and advanced information systems. For the purpose of integrating and automating the whole processes from an industry perspective, it is of great importance to develop a standard classification system and project numbering system (PNS) for the modernized Korean housing. This paper focuses on the standard classification systems and PNS for cost and schedule control. The distinct characteristics and managerial requirements were explored and embedded into the proposed classifications for modernized Hanok.
This study was conducted to apply the modular construction method to Han-ok. The modular method, which is differentiated from the existing one, means a construction method that equipments, windows and interior materials are prefabricated as a six-sided object at a plant and then they are assembled at the least process on the spot. As for the theoretical observation, the theoretical basis to apply the modular method to the modular housing and Hanok was divided into environmental and economic aspect. In order to apply the modular method to Hanok, the unit scale and size were selected and the plane of unit module Hanok was developed. And a standard with regard to the unit combination and material lifting transportation method was set and planned. In addition, through the comparison the unit modular Hanok to the existing Hanok, the difference was analyzed and the strength was identified in terms fo design method, structure, construction method, period and cost. In final, the conclusion, with regard to the economic, technical application in future, was drawn through arranging the study contents. The unit modular Hanok to carry out the high-quality dwelling through construction period reduction, standardized construction materials and improved insulation performance can meet the demands for a paradigm of new construction technology.

In an attempt to disseminate modernized Korean traditional housing (Hanok), a ten-year research project was initiated in 2010 by the Korean Government to reduce the construction cost, improve the facility performance, and automate the Hanok construction industry. To meet these objectives, various research areas, including public policies, planning methods, design standards, new building materials, construction standards, maintenance procedures, advanced project management tools, and integrated IT applications have been developed. In addition, comprehensive technologies developed were applied to the ten pilot Hanok buildings to validate the real-world performance as part of the research project. To further facilitate the digital transformation of the Hanok industry by using the research results, it is required to disseminate the developed technologies in an automated and standardized manner. In particular, it is crucial to systematize and manage the interoperability of various technical data and accumulated historical data for different business functions, especially within the highly fragmented industry. In this context, this paper proposes an ontology-based Hanok information dissemination platform to enable industry-wide automated knowledge and information sharing. The system architecture, standardized historical database, and advanced analytics based on ontology web language (OWL) for the Hanok industrialization platform are introduced.

This study examined the structural elements of Korean-style houses (Hanok) and proposed formula accounting for their similar patterns and regular behavior. The design of modern apartment buildings adopts many aesthetic elements from Hanok but those are only for interior decoration. In this study, the projected Hanok eaves were examined in terms of the length of solar insolation. Leaning pillars toward the inside of the building were analyzed in detail not only for the front and back pillar, side pillar, but also the corner pillar. This study also suggested a design element from the Hanok structure, such as the elevated balcony, porch flooring, and inner garden in porch area. In addition, the new apartment plan improved air circulation, ventilation and natural lighting.
