According to the conventional train control system, the area of each train is detected by plural track circuits located in a constant distance on railway lines in order to control a distance between trains. The conventional train control system has the difficulty in making use of the substructure thoroughly and transmitting enormous amount of information. To solve those problems, the wireless CBTC system has been a global issue. To apply wireless CBTC system to train system, the following two requirements are preferentially necessary: (1) Dualizing wireless CBTC system to control trains ceaselessly in a system accident, (2) Improving dependency of transmitted information for location and velocity to protect collision and derailment of lightweight trains in advance.

This paper proposed a mobile multicast technique to satisfy end-to-end QoS for various user requirements in mobile network environment. In order to provide seamless mobility, fast handoff technique was applied. By using L2 mobile trigger, it was possible to minimize remarkable amount of packet loss by delay occurred during handoff. To provide efficient multicast, concept of hierarchy was introduced to Xcast++, which results in a creation of HXcast++. HXcast++ optimized transfer path of multicast and reduced expensive multicast maintenance costs caused by frequent handoff. Suggestion of GMA (Group Management Agent) mechanism allows joining to group immediately without waiting IGMP Membership query during handoff. GMA mechanism will minimize the delay for group registration process and the resource usage due to delay of withdrawal process. And also use of buffering & forwarding technique minimized packet loss during generation of multicast tree. IntServ/RSVP was used to provide End-to-End QoS in local domain and DiffServ was used in global domain. To minimize reestablishment of RSVP session delay, extended HXcast++ control messages ware designed to require PATH message. HXcast++ proposed in this thesis is defined as multicast technique to provide end-to-end QoS and also to satisfy various user requirements in mobile network environment.

CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) is a railroad system, using wireless communication for data transmission between on-board units and ground units, that makes ground computer periodically collect position and speed data from each train and transmits the preceding train's distance data up to speed limit point so as to make on-board control unit control the optimum train speed. Due to the fact that wireless communication system for train control employs only limited frequency band and output frequency, a number of ground communication units should be installed at track-side; also a running train should carry out Handover function which maintains the communication by accessing a new communication channel of the adjacent on-board communication units in accordance with the output of received radio wave. Especially CBTC is largely dependent on Handoff function between ground communication units. Therefore, this paper provides the method of identification of hazard between ground communication units and on board units.
Abstract As interest in wireless hand-held terminals and in personal communications services increases recently, there have been broad studies on the ways to support multimedia applications provided in wired networks such as B-ISDN (Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network) in wireless networks. However, since many studies have focused on Quality of Service (QoS) Provisioning in wired networks to provide multimedia applications, new methods of QoS Provisioning are needed in wireless networks to resolve the problem of wireless channel fading and the difficulty of mobility occurred in wireless networks. This paper proposes three schemes of QoS Provisioning in wireless networks which will make continuous QoS guarantee and efficient use of limited wireless resources possible. The first scheme reserves bandwidth in proportion to the amount of real-time traffic in the neighbor cells to decrease the handoff dropping rate of delay sensitive real-time connections, adapting reserved bandwidth for efficient resource utilization. The second scheme is predictive bandwidth reservation scheme that utilizes the past handoff information. It can decrease overheads required to adapt bandwidth reservation. The last scheme is priority-based call admission control prioritizing traffic type (real-time traffic/ non-real-time traffic), connection type (new connection /handoff connection), and mobile terminal speed (fast mobile/slow mobile). Simulation results show that the proposed QoS Provisioning schemes improve the total system performance by achieving three goals - required QoS guarantee, higher bandwidth utilization and less overhead.
When using TCP over a mobile network, TCP responds to a handoff by invoking a congestion control algorithm, thereby resulting in a degraded end-to-end performance in a mobile network. In this paper, two schemes are proposed, TCP-MD and TCP-R. TCP-MD can detect the movement of s mobile host early on, whereas TCP-R can force the source to freeze data transmission during registration. The proposed schemes maintain end-to-end TCP semantics, making it possible to fully interoperate with the existing infrastructure. Only a small change is required in the mobile host, plus the implementation is simple because some Mobile IP messages are used to notify the handoff, eliminating the need for any additional messages. Simulations confirmed that the proposed schemes give an excellent performance under various environments.

In the wireless adaptive modulation and coding(AMC) systems, the modulation type of user's connection can be changed dynamically. and the ongoing connection might fail due to the change of modulation. In this paper, we approach the AMC-induced CAC problem by focusing on the guaranteed connection. Three kinds of calls, new, handoff, and modulation-changed calls, are considered. We propose a modified guard channel CAC scheme that allows the modulation-changed and handoff calls to use the guard channel. Then we analyze a Markov model for the CAC scheme with long-term AMC in mind. According to the simulation results, the proposed approach reduces the call dropping probability for modulation-changed calls, which suggests the threshold of guard channels can be determined based on the proposed approach.

Spectrum sharing in centrally controlled cognitive radio (CR) networks has been widely studied, however, research on channel access for distributively controlled individual cognitive users has not been fully characterized. This paper conducts an analysis of random channel access of cognitive users controlled in a distributed manner in a CR network. Based on the proposed estimation method, each cognitive user can estimate the current channel condition by using its own Markov-chain model and can compute its own blocking probability, collision probability, and forced termination probability. Using the proposed scheme, CR with distributed control (CR-DC), CR devices can make self-controlled decisions based on the status estimations to adaptively control its system parameters to communicate better.

This paper addresses a call admission control(CAC) scheme giving handoff calls a priority over new calls for OFDMA wireless communication systems. The characteristics of OFDMA system and a variety of user QoS (Quality of Service) requirements are incorporated into the proposed CAC scheme which consists of several optimization modules for the system resource(subcarriers and power) allocations. The mathematical models and its solution methods for the embedded resource allocation problems are proposed. Some extensive computational experiments are conducted to illustrate the superiority of our CAC.
TFRC(TCP-Friendly Rate Control) is proposed to satisfy the demands of multimedia applications while being reasonably fair when competing for bandwidth with TCP flows[1-3]. However, TFRC has a shortcoming that the fairness and throughput are degraded when the mobile host using TFRC experiences handoffs. This paper proposes a new control mechanism based on TFRC, which deals with the congestion caused by handoffs as well as the losses caused during the handoffs. The simulation results show that our mechanism achieves better throughput and fairness compared to TFRC for repeated handoffs.
