The handoff is a distinctive characteristic of the mobile networks. In the CDMA systems, if base stations support multiple Frequency Assignment (FA), they provide both soft handoff and hard handoff. Under the CDMA environments, the soft handoff guarantees the favorable service quality and the continuity of call connection without interruption, and increases the service capacity of the base stations. This paper proposes call connection control schemes with handoff queue for supporting efficient handoff processing. The proposed schemes are divided into two categories: single handoff queue scheme and multiple handoff queue scheme. We analyze the performance of the proposed call connection control schemes using numerical analysis. From the analysis results, we can say that it is more desirable to avoid hard handoff as long as handoff queues are used. When a single handoff queue used, adaptive scheme that properly mixes avoidable and avoidable hard handoff method under the given traffic condition is more desirable. In case that multiple handoff queues are used, the suitable trade-off needs to be developed between handoff blocking probability and hard handoff probability to guarantee a given blocking probability threshold.

When the mobile device moves from the coverage of one access point to the radio coverage of another access point it needs to maintain its connection with the current access point before it successfully discovers the new access point, this process is known as handoff. During handoff the acceptable delay a voice over IP application can bear is of 50ms whereas the delay on medium access control layer is high enough that goes up to 350-500ms. This research provides a suitable methodology on medium access control layer of the IEEE 802.11 network. The medium access control layer comprises of three phases, namely discovery, reauthentication and re-association. The discovery phase on medium access control layer takes up to 90% of the total handoff latency. The objective is to effectively reduce the delay for discovery phase to ensure a seamless handoff. The research proposes a scheme that reduces the handoff latency effectively by scanning channels prior to the actual handoff process starts and scans only the neighboring access points. Further, the proposed scheme enables the mobile device to scan first the channel on which it is currently operating so that the mobile device has to perform minimum number of channel switches. The results show that the mobile device finds out the new potential access point prior to the handoff execution hence the delay during discovery of a new access point is minimized effectively.
New and handoff calls control mechanisms are the key point to wireless cellular networks. In this paper, we present an adaptive algorithm for dynamic channel allocation scheme with guard channels and also with handoff calls waiting queue ensuring that handoff calls take priority over new calls. Our goal is to find better tradeoff between handoffs and new calls blocking probabilities in order to achieve more efficient channel utilization. Simpy is a Python based discrete event simulation system. We use Simpy to build our simulation models to get analytical data.
This paper presents an adaptive call admission control(CAC) algorithm based on a target handoff call dropping probability in mobile wireless environments. This method uses a neural network for predicting and reserving the bandwidth demands for handoff calls and new calls. The amount of bandwidth to be reserved is adaptively adjusted by a target value of handoff call dropping probability(CDP). That is, if the handoff CDP exceeds the a target CDP value, the bandwidth to be reserved should be increased to reduce the handoff dropping probability below a target value. The proposed method is intended to prevent from increasing handoff call dropping probability when bandwidth to be reserved is not enough for handoff calls due to an uncertain prediction. Our simulations compare the handoff CDP in proposed CAC with that of an existing CAC. Results show that the proposed method sustains handoff call dropping probability below our target value.
If the service provider provides mobile service with mobile switching centers that use different handoff message format, the soft-handoff between mobile switching centers is not available and the hard-handoff scheme is used instead. When this occurs, calls are often disconnected or there is an interruption of service. This can be very annoying to a mobile user. We propose the handoff subsystem of the ATM switch which provides the soft-handoff between wireless cells under the control of different MSCs. The proposed handoff subsystem transforms the handoff message format of the source MSC to that of the destination MSC. It also provides efficient routing scheme that distributes handoff packets to balance the traffic load.

Personal Communication Networks will be composed of ATM-based broadband ISDN in the future. However, unlike the wired networks, many challenges will arise in the wireless communication service such as PCS. These callenges are frequency alteration of cell routing path, relatively very high error rate at transmission over the wireless interface, etc. Particularly, the alteration of cell routing path caused by handoff makes temporary deterioration of QoS. In this paper, the signaling flows of handoff scenarios which may occur on Personal Communication Networks are presented, and verified by Pertri-Net toolkit. In addition, the cell flow control scheme which minimizes the lagging gap between cells and maintains the cell sequence during handoff is proposed. The proposed scheme can be summarized as the differentiation of normal queue and handoff queue, and the cell flow control between these queues. For verification of the proposed scheme, we used two approaches, which are mathermatical manipulation and SLAM simulation.

Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a handoff education program for nursing students and examine the effects of it on nursing students' self-efficacy, communication ability, and clinical performance ability. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest method. The experimental group (n=31) received handoff education using SBAR; the control group (n=31) received non-SBAR handoff education. Self-efficacy, communication ability, clinical performance ability were measured to evaluate the effects of the program. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvements in self-efficacy (p<.001), and communication ability (p=.025) compared to the control group. However, there was no significant difference in the clinical performance ability between the groups (p=.618). Conclusion: The results indicate that the handoff education program using SBAR is effective in improving nursing students'self-efficacy and communication ability.

Soft handoff provided in CDMA cellular system has much advantage such as better service quality, interference control and low call dropping probability. In this paepr, we propose an optimum resource reservationscheme for handoff calls in the CDMA cellular system to increase the soft handoff probability in handoff. In the proposed scheme, resources of each frquency channel are reserved for handoff according to the number of its neighbot cells serving the same frequency channel. A performance analysis shows that the soft handoff probability of the proposed scheme is higher than that of conventional scheme disregarding the condition of frquency assignment of neighbot cells, and that ever frequency channel served by neighbor cells should reserve more than one traffic channel for handoff to get good performance.

Resource reservation scheme is an effective method to guarantee QoS for handoff calls in the next generation multimedia mobile communication systems, but it causes negative impacts on blocking probability of new calls. In this paper, to optimize the tradeoff between dropping probability of handoff calls and blocking probability of new calls, relay station based handoff prioritization control algorithm is proposed. In this algorithm, the relay station participates in handoff procedure and enables mobile stations to have guaranteed prompt service after handoff by providing highly efficient data transmission. In this paper, Markov chain models of the proposed handoff prioritization schemes are developed, and dropping probability of handoff packets and blocking probability of new packets are derived. By numerical analysis, the proposed algorithm has been proved to outperform conventional handoff prioritization schemes in terms of dropping probability of handoff packets and blocking Probability of new packets.
Dynamic Handoff Control Scheme (DHCS), which is propose d in this paper, suggests the method to request handoff at the optimal time. To accomplish this, DHCS measures the speed of the mobile station and sets the pilot strength for handoff request. When the pilot strength of the current base station is bigg or than the pilot strength for handoff request, which means the pilot strength of the current base station is big enough so the possibility of the call to be disconnected is low, DHCS doesn't request for the handoff even though the pilot strength of the adjacent base station is bigger than the pilot strength of the curent base station. DHCS guarantees the QoS (Quality of Service) by processing the handoff calls prior to new calls at the base station and providing continuous service for the mobile station by setting the priorities for the calls according to the queue waiting time transmitted from the mobile stations.
