A Survey and Analysis of the Hygienic Aspects of Pet-Dog Clothes Materials

  • The purpose of this research is to reveal the antimicrobial activity of pet-dog clothes by investigating the bacteria resistance of 4 kinds of pet-dog clothes materials. 1. Investigation Results of Pet-Dog Clothes 64.7% of 150 survey participants, revealed they had pet-dog clothes. Hand laundering was 67.0%, while the laundering of both human and animal clothes was 9.2%. The greatest washing frequency was once every 2 weeks. So, the subjects didn't seem to think high of hygienic matters. Even though no if any relations were reported by 34.7% of the subjects, there were some experiences like sneezing or coughing (41.3%), slight itching (20.7%), and acute skin allergies. There were such hugging methods as heart to heart to the center (22.7%), face to face and around the mouth (16.7%), and below the heart with the dog's face outward (15.3%). Thus, hugging the dog near the pet-lover's face seems to be the cause of respiratory diseases including sneezes and coughs. 2. Results of the Anti-Bacteria Experiment of Pet-Dog Clothes Materials According to the analysis of the germs collected and cultured in this study to reveal the properness of pet-dog clothes materials, they were bacteria or bacilli in shapes. Spore growth was active in the order of such experimental materials as artificial leather > cotton > cotton/ nylon > polyester (finest thread). In terms of germ groups, the order was polyester(finest thread) > cotton > cotton/ nylon > artificial leather.

중환자실 간호사의 반코마이신 내성 장구균 감염관리에 대한 인지도, 이행도 및 관련요인 (Factors Influencing Level of Awareness and Compliance with Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus Infection Control among Nurses in Intensive Care Units)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus infection control among nurses in intensive care units. Method: Data were collected from August 15 to October 14, 2007 from 188 nurses working in intensive care units. The nurses answered a 26 item-questionnaire, which included management of the cohort (14 items), hand washing (6 items) and management of the environment (6 items). Descriptive statistics, t or F test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis were used with SPSS PC+ 14.0 to analyze the data. Results: The participant's level of awareness of Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus infection control was 3.87; that of compliance was 3.74. Significant factors influencing the level of compliance with Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus infection control were'the level of the awareness' and 'the type of intensive care unit'. These two variables accounted for 21.0% of variance for compliance with the Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus infection control among the participants. Conclusion: In order to develop a strategy to increase the compliance with Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus infection control, it is necessary to be concerned about 'the level of the awareness', 'the type of intensive care unit;', and 'experiences of caring for patients with Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus'.

손씻기 향상프로그램과 MRSA 보균자 색출프로그램이 MRSA감염 발생률에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Handwashing Improving Program and MRSA Carrier Screening Program on the MRSA Infection Rates in an Intensive Care Unit)

  • Purpose: To assess the effect of handwashing improving program and MRSA carrier detection program on MRSA(methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infection rate in a intensive care unit. Method: The intervention was Nosocomial Infection(NI) control program consisted of hand washing improving program and identification and treatment of MRSA carrier. Data on the NI and MRSA infections were collected by an infection control nurse based on the definition of CDC. MRSA infection rates were calculated by the number of MRSA infection per 100 admissions or 1,000 patients-days. The difference of MRSA infection rates between pre and post intervention was tested by Chi-square at =.05. Result: MRSA infection rates 3.0% or 3.2 per 1,000 patient-days at the pre, 4.6% or 3.7 per 1,000 patient-days at the post, and the differences were not statistically significant (p=.411, p=.769 respectively). Conclusion: The handwashing improving program and MRSA carrier detection program was not effective in reducing the Nosocomial Infection(NI) or MRSA infection rates. It is recommended further studies with a longer intervention and follow-up period.

미국 보육시설의 유아보육실 계획에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Planning of Nursing Rooms of Child Care Centers in U.S.A.)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the present condition about the space planning of the nursing rooms at the child care center in U.S.A. The researchers investigated the physical conditions of the centers through sketching, measurement, taking pictures and observation. On the other hand, to understand the user's needs, the interview to the directors of the centers was performed. As a result, the followings were proposed. The grouping of children depending upon the age has to be more classified according to the development period. And the guideline for the space areas has to be improved to a larger standard than present regulation. And the most impressive characteristic of the center in U.S.A. is the functional space design. The space such as toilet, washing room, kitchenet are well organized into the nursing rooms for children. Various ideas for arranging above functions in the small nursing rooms have to be developed in Korea. And the dynamic space arrangement of nursing room is also impressive. The material of the floor has to be considered variously for the comfort of the children.

  • Time-temperature relationship and microbiological quality were assessed and critical control points were identified through hazard analysis during the phases of production in two different packaged meals (Dosirak) manufacturing establishments (A, B:Kim Pab). Microbiological tests on foods, equipments and utensils were done according to standard procedures and included total plate count, coliforms and fecal coliforms. The results of the study are summarized as follows : time-temperature control management was needed because time-temperature abuse more than 8 hours at dangerous temperature zone (5-6$0^{\circ}C$) was observed from pre-preperation to distribution phase; Poor sanitary practices of employees were observed in hand washing and using disposable gloves; Microbiological analysis results of equirpments and utensils showed possible cross-contamination risks when foods were contacted with them; Kim Pab needed thorough quality control because it included various mixed ingredients of cooked and uncooked and had many apportunities of cross-contamination either by equipments or hands through whole production processes.

Food safety knowledge and practice by the stages of change model in school children

  • In this study, 342 grade 4-6 elementary school students in Gyeonggi-do were recruited to determine their readiness to change food safety behavior and to compare their food safety knowledge and practices by the stages of change. The subjects were divided into three stages of change; the percentage of stage 1 (precontemplation) was 10.1%, the percentage of stage 2 (contemplation and preparation) was 62.4%, and that of stage 3 (action and maintenance) was 27.5%. Food safety knowledge scores in stage 3 (4.55) or stage 2 (4.50) children were significantly higher than those in stage 1 children (4.17) (P < 0.05). The two food safety behavior items "hand washing practice" and "avoidance of harmful food" were significantly different among the three groups (P < 0.05). Stages of change were significantly and positively correlated with food safety knowledge and practice. Age was significantly and negatively correlated with the total food safety behavior score (r = -0.142, P < 0.05). The most influential factor on the stage of change was a mother's instruction about food safety (P < 0.01).

서울시 초등학생의 과잉 텔레비전 시청과 관련된 건강지표 (Association of Health Indicators with Excessive Television Viewing among Elementary School Students in Seoul, Korea)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate prevalence and ecological characteristics of excessive television viewing among elementary school students in Seoul. Methods: Secondary data, representative sample of 11,082 subjects in Seoul was used. After prevalence of the excessive television viewing was identified by using factor analysis, 6 main factors explaining the ecological indicators was founded. After identifying prevalence of the excessive television viewing, by using factor analysis, we found 6 main factors explaining the ecological indicators. After categorizing factors into socio-psychological and lifestyle characteristics, we were investigated the odds ratio of excessive television viewing per characteristics by using multiple logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of excessive television viewing was 29.7% among the elementary school student in Seoul. The prevalence were higher in male, higher grade, and non-South of the Han River. Socio-psychological indicators which expressed excessive television viewing were annoying or bullying, scolding from teacher, depressed mode, thought for a runaway from home, an experience of diet, and negative body image. Life style indicators were a lower intake of fruit and vegetables, a higher intake of Ramyun and soft drink, a worse life style of hand washing, and wearing safety equipment. Conclusion: Lifestyle of television viewing was the comprehensive results from family, school, and society rather than a personal preference. Therefore, it is necessary to educate the hazard of excessive television viewing, to reenforce the students' health competence, to activate a safe leisure program as an alternate of television viewing, and to develop a recommendation.

아파트 욕실의 기능적 공간분리 연구 (A Study on the Functional Fraction of the Bathroom Space in Apartment)

  • Bathroom in apartment has the main functions of bath, washing hand and evacuation. The bathroom equipments for these functions are bathtub, shower booth, washbasin and toilet stool. Generally, these equipment are put together in one space, so it may cause people have trouble in using bathroom by other family members' occupation. Therefore the purpose of this study is to investigate the degree of preference about bathroom space fraction and grope for the connection with other spaces in apartment. The subject of this study were residents who live in brand apartments located in Seoul. The survey were carried out from november to December 2006. The data were analyzed through SPSS/PC+ using frequency, percentage and crossovers. The results of this study are as following, 1. A number of respondents would have trouble in using the bathroom by other family members' occupation once a week or more. The functional fraction of bathroom space is needed. 2. Close adjacency to Powder space, dress room is preferred. Coordination of washbasin and powder space is also needed. 3. Each separated spaces can be connected with other related spaces.

인공호흡기 튜브교환주기에 따른 인공호흡기 관련 폐렴발생률 (The Incidence Rate of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia in Relation to the Exchange of Circuit Cycle)

  • Purpose: This study was aimed at providing scientific evidence for minimizing ventilator-associated pneumonia(VAP) by identifying appropriate timing of exchange of circuit for mechanical ventilator that is well suitable for the medical environment of intensive care units of hospitals in Korea. Method: This was a quasi-experimental study with a convenience sample of 19 adult subjects aged over 18 years who were admitted to the NS ICU of C university hospital, and placed on mechanical ventilator. The subjects were placed in two groups, compared on the incidence rate of VAP after they received exchange of circuit either at 1-week interval (N =10) or 2-week interval (N = 9). Result: 1) When considering 1000 days as the standard unit of analysis for incidence, the incidence rate of VAP was 7.19 cases at the 1-week cycle exchange group and 15.23 at the 2-week cycle exchange group, showing no statistically significant difference between the two groups. 2) There were a total of 3 types of bacteria isolated from the patients with VAP, including 2 cases with P. aeruginosa, 1 case with Streptococcus group F and A. baumannii. Conclusion: With thorough hand washing and strict management of tracheal tube of mechanical ventilator as well as use of tracheal intubation techniques, exchange cycle of circuit of mechanical ventilator by nurses may be changed from 1-week to 2-week interval.

대구지역 초등학생의 학교급식 위생에 대한 인식, 지식, 실천 수준 및 위생교육 요구도 분석 (Analysis on perception, knowledge, and practice level for school food hygiene and need for hygiene education of elementary school students in Daegu)

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate perception, knowledge, and practice level for school food hygiene and need for hygiene education with 300 students of elementary schools in Daegu. The average of correct answer percentage on knowledge about food hygiene of the respondents was 65.3%. For practice level of personal hygiene in school food, the average score was 3.75 out of 5 points. The ratio of educational experience of hygiene and dietary behaviors at home was 73.2%. Almost half of the respondents answered that 'food ingredients' should be the most hygienic. About 90% of the respondents recognized 'hand washing' had effect on prevention of foodborne illness. In addition, the respondents wanted to get the information about food hygiene from 'cooking practice at school', 'school broadcasting', 'education program on TV', and 'school newsletter' in order. These results suggest that continuous education on food hygiene for elementary school students are required and supervision to let them have proper hygiene habit is needed.
