A Feasibility Study on the Han River Area as the Construction Site for the Kyung Bu Canal

  • To facilitate the carriage of goods and products, an improvement of the transportation system is greatly needed in Korea. The construction of the Kyung Bu canal that can traverse over the wide area of southern Korea os proposed to be one of the most favorable choices to resolve this need. To fulfill this plan, we investigated the possibility of connecting the Han River (in the midwest) with the Nak-tong River (in the southeast) via the Cho-ryeong tunnel (20.5 km long and 125 m high). According to topographic and geological mapping analysis, we are capable of selecting the optimal locations for the tunnels and locking systems. The water requirement for high locking systems can be satisfied by constructing additional dams above the Choong-ju area or by introducing water saving lock system. The results of our investigation support the idea such a canal system, if constructed, could lead to a revolution of the Korea's transportation system.

  • The Han River is divided into North and South Korea by NLL(Northern Limit Line) and its area has been blocked by CCL(Civil Control Line) since the Korean War in 1950. Satellite remote sensing, therefore, is uniquely suited to monitoring bar transformation in the region. In river with bar, the characteristics of its physical conditions have a close relationship with bar morphology. In this paper, a monitoring approach of bar transformation in the Han River Estuary is presented using RADARSAT/SAR images from 2000 to 2005 and spatial patterns of bar morphology are presented. it could be said that in the estuary vegetated area and natural levees are developed well, but bars are shifted after an event like a flood. It is also showed that suspended solids such as silt transported through the estuary could contribute highly to a sedimentation environment around Incheon.

팔당호에서 인공 수초재배섬 설치에 따른 동물플랑크톤 군집 변화 (Changes of Zooplankton Community in an Artificial Vegetation Island of Lake Paldang)

  • Zooplankton community dynamics were studied after establishment of an artificial vegetation island (AVI) in Lake Paldang, from April 2005 to November 2006. There were distinct seasonal and inter-annual changes of total zooplankton abundance at the survey site. Total zooplankton abundance rapidly increased in spring and fall, while it remained low throughout winter. During summer, the dynamics of zooplankton community seemed to be largely affected by hydrological parameters such as, precipitation and inflow. Total zooplankton abundance and biomass below AVI was much higher than that of pelagic zone (L1) in Lake Paldang. Copepoda and cladocera represented the main bulk of the zooplankton community from summer to fall at the both sites. Copepods were more dominant at AVI area, while cladocera were more dominant at pelagic zone (L1). Water quality, prey and habitat condition, species competition between zooplankton seemed to play important roles in dominance of the copepoda and cladocera in zooplankton community at AVI area. Our results conclude that artificial vegetation island provide the stable habitat and besides phytoplankton, diverse food to zooplankton, and consequently influence the diversity and richness of zooplankton community.

한강 담수어중의 중금속 함량에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Heavy Metal Contents in Freshwater Fishes from Han River)

  • This study was performed to investigate the contamination level of heavy metals in freshwater flshes. The samples of 92 cases were collected at 7 areas located on HanRiver from November to December in 1980. Contents of heavy metals: cadmium, lead, copper, chromium and zinc were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results were as follows: 1. Generally mean value of the heavy metal contents of fishes collected on lower parts of Han River were higher than those of upper parts. 2. In the cadmium contents, the highest value was $20.52{\pm}5.10$ ppb in Carassius auratus, and the values at Hannam and Noryangjin area were higher than those at other parts on Han River. 3. In the lead contents, the highest was $0.29{\pm}0.03ppm$ in Carassius auratus and that in Parasilurus asotus was the lowest $0.12{\pm}0.02ppm$ Mean contents of lead in the samples of Hannam and Haengjue area were higher than those of other area 4. In the copper contents, the highest value was $3.13{\pm}0.34ppm$ in Carassius auratus and the contents of fishes of Haengjue area was higher than those of any other area. It was significant among the species, but not among the collecting areas in copper contents. 5. In the chromium contents, the highest was $1.16{\pm}0.12ppm$ in Carassius auratus and that in Parasilurus asotus was the lowest $0.21{\pm}0.01ppm$ The contents of samples of Hannam and Noryangjin area were also higher than those of other area. 6. In the zinc contents, that in Arassius auratus was the highest value with $14.06{\pm}1.13ppm$ and that in Parasilurus asotus was the lowest $4.79{\pm}0.53ppm$. On the other hand, it was significant among the species and collecting areas. 7. Accumulation of heavy metals in freshwater fishes is tended to increase with growth.

팔당호의 질소거동과 수지 (The Nitrogen Behavior and Budget in Lake Paldang)

  • We studied the nitrogen behavior and budget of Lake Paldang from March to December 2008. The particulate nitrogen (PN) concentrations ranged from 7 to 13% of the total nitrogen concentration (TN) in the stream inflows, the downstream outflow, and the lake water. The nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3-N$) concentration ranged from 67 to 78% of the TN. In the three rivers of Lake Paldang, Gyeongan River (In3 site) had the highest average of the TN, 5.037 mgN/L, but North Han River (In2 site) had the lowest average TN, 1.683 mgN/L. South Han River (In1 site) had the average TN of 2.399 mgN/L. In the dam discharge, TN showed the average 2.063 mgN/L. In the lake water, L4 site (Gyeongan River area) had the highest average TN, 3.781 mgN/L, but L3 site (North Han River) had the lowest average TN, 1.587 mgN/L. Total input of nitrogen loads to Lake Paldang was about 30,875 ton/year in 2008. Inflow rivers contributed 30,643 ton/year (South Han River: 18,111 ton/year (59%), North Han River: 11,333 ton/year (37%), and Gyeongan River: 1,199 ton/year (4%)). The atmospheric deposition had 135 ton/year, the nitrogen release from the bottom sediments had 88 ton/year, and macrophytes had 9 ton/year. Total output of nitrogen loads from Lake Paldang was about 31,256 ton/year. The downstream from dam contributed 29,877 ton/year, and the sediment deposition was 1,379 ton/year.

Computation of Areal Reduction Factor and its Regional Variability

  • Areal Reduction Factor(ARF) has been developed and used to convert point Rainfall intensity-Duration-Frequency(I-D-F) to areal I-D-F in many countries. In Korea, though ARF was estimated in Han river basin by several researchers, it has some limitations to apply to other regions due to low denisity of rainfall gauging station and shortage of data. In this study ARF has been developed in area of relatively high density of rainfall gauging station, i.e., Pyungchang river(Han river), Wi stream(Nakdong river), and Bochung stream(Guem river) basin by geographically fixed-area method. And coefficient of variation of mean annual precipitation was presented to use ARE in other areas and its applicability was analyzed.

  • 하천의 흐름해석 분야에서는 모형이 요구하는 입·출력 자료의 구성이 복잡할 뿐만 아니라 흐름의 공간적 분포특성 도시가 매우 중요하지만 지금까지 체계적인 자료관리가 이루어지지 않은 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 등고, 하천, 표고, 경계 및 하도단면 등으로 구성된 국가지리정보시스템과 연계된 데이터베이스를 구축하는 방법과 등간격 하도단면 자료를 구축하는 방법을 제안하였다. 연구대상지역은 팔당댐 하류에서 인도교 지점에 이르는 한강구간을 선택하였다. 구축된 데이터베이스는 연구대상지역의 과학적인 하천유량 관리에 유용하게 이용될 것이다.

남한강수계 저수기 수질변동 특성에 관한 연구 (Investigation on Water Quality Variation Characteristics during Dry Season in Namhan River Drainage Basin)

  • From the direct outflow of Chungju Dam to the junction of water body and watershed in Paldang lake is the scope of this research. This study performed to investigate the main cause of water quality deterioration and the influenced region in the middle field range of the Namhan river Basin with the onsite measurement of water quality and flow rate simultaneously during spring dry season. The purpose of this study is to find out the time-spatial variation characteristics of water quality and flow rate. Following the flow direction $BOD_5$ and $COD_{Mn}$ concentration increased to the highest value of 3.7 mg/L, 5.9 mg/L at Wolgesa respectively. Chl.a concentration increased to $50mg/m^3$ or so at Kangsang, after that it decreased to $37mg/m^3$ at the junction of Paldang lake. Organic matter concentration variation trend showed similar than that of Chl.a. Also $BOD_5$ concentration tendency was similar to Chl.a in every measuring sites except Paldang lake mixing zone. The major factors of water quality deterioration in Namhan river and Paldang lake during dry season were algal bloom and followed internal production. High phosphorus load from Dalcheon and Seom river caused dry season algal bloom and internal production in transitional zone which was stagnant area in downstream of Namhan river.

한강 및 낙동강 유역의 양수장 지구 물관리효율 평가 (Assessment of Water Management Efficiencies for Irrigation Pumping Stations in the Han River and Nakdong River Basins)

  • The objective of this study is assessing water management efficiency using water withdrawals from rivers and water requirements for paddies. The water management efficiency was defined by the ratio of water requirements and water withdrawals. Water withdrawals were estimated using the operating times and pumping capacity of the pumping stations from 1992 to 1999 in the Han River and Nakdong River basins. Water requirements were estimated by adding the evapotranspiration of the crops and infiltrations in the irrigated area. Evapotranspiration from the paddies was calculated by the FAO modified Penman method with observed daily weather data. The monthly water management efficiency was analyzed for each pumping stations and the district offices of KARICO (Korea Agricultural and Rural Infrastructure Corporation). The efficiencies of 59 pumping stations in the Han River basin varied from 19% to 135%, and the average was 61%. The efficiencies of 146 pumping stations in the Nakdong River basin ranged from 17% to 190%, and the average was 72%. There were no good correlations between the water management efficiency and pump capacity or irrigated area, it showed that the water management efficiency was affected by the traditional water management practices rather than the scale of irrigation district.

팔당호 어류군집의 생태특성 및 장기 변동 (Ecological Characteristics and Long-term Variation of Fish Community in Lake Paldang and its Tributaries)

  • The community structure and ecological characteristics of fish community in Lake Paldang were investigated from May to September 2008. During the survey period, 53 species belonging to 13 families were collected. Dominant species was Squalidus japonicus coreanus representing 81.8% of total number and 25.7% of total biomass of collected fish and subdominant species was Lepomis macrochirus representing 3.3% of total number and 18.9% of total biomass of collected fish. There were 20 Korean endemic species (38% of collected species number) including Cottus koreanus and 4 exotic species (7.5%) including Micropterus salmoides. The similarity analysis of fish communities among water areas of Lake Paldang using UPGMA showed that fish community of North-Han River was similar to that of South-Han River area and was different from that of Gyeongan River area. Long-term variation of fish community from 1972 to present study in Lake Paldang showed decrease of the species numbers after dam construction until 1994, and gradual increase from 1996 to present study indicating the disturbance of lentic system by dam construction in the 1980s. The increase of species number in the late 2000s may results in part from the increase of survey sites of successive studies. L. macrochirus which was designated as a domestic ecosystem-disturbing alien species with wide food niche have shown more than 20% of relative abundance since 1996 indicating the adverse effect on not only fish community but also aquatic ecosystem food web of Lake Paldang.
