Authigenic minerals found in sandstones and mudrocks of the Lower Hayang Group (Cretaceous) in the central part of the Kyungsang Basin are carbonate minerals (calcite, dolomite), clay minerals (illite, chlorite, C/S, I/S and kaolinite), albite, quartz and hematite. Characteristic diagenetic mineral assemblages are as follows: albite-chlorite (including C/S)-hematite in the Chilgog Formation, albite-illite-calcite in the Silla Conglomerate, illite-chlorite-hematite in the Haman Formation and albite-chlorite-dolomite in the Panyawol Formation, respectively. Among clay minerals reflecting the physical and chemical change of the diagenetic process, illite, the dominant clay mineral, occurs in every formation in the study area. Chlorite occurs mainly in green or gray sandstones and mudrocks, or in sandstones and mudrocks of the Chilogok Formation which contains a high content of volcanic materials. Based on the mineral assemblage, diagenetic minerals are strongly related with source rocks. Judging from the illite crystallinity, diagenesis of sandstones and mudrocks in the study area reached the late diagenetic stage or low grade metamorphisim. The diagenetic process was much influenced by intrusion of the Bulguksa granite, content of organic materials, grain size, and depositional environment rather than burial depth.
One of the most medically important snail species of Korea is Semisulcospira spp., a member of the freshwater prosobranch family pleuroceridae. The parasites that these snails transmit to humans are mainly Paragonimus westermani and Metagonimus yokogawoi. On the other hand, Semisulcospira snails are edible as a foodstuff in Korea. The present study was first aimed to detect out residual pesticides in the snails collected at the endemic and non-endemic areas of paragonimiasis in Korea and to make relationship to the detectability of larval trematodes shed from the snails. In addition, water specimens from the habitats where the snails were collected were sampled and analysed to elucidate environmental conditions of the habitats. This malaco-ecological survey was done at 7 endemic and 3 non-endemic areas of paragonimiasis for about more than 2 years, May, 1984 through October, 1986. All the water smaples both from the endemic and non-endemic areas of paragonimiasis showed normal ranges of the criteria of upper freshwater streams, with lower B.O.D. (0.4~2.0 ppm) and higher D.O. values (9.5~11.0 ppm) than those in the large river systems Infection rate of digenetic trematodes in total snails collected was 6.7%, but no Paragonimus cercaria was detected out at all even in the endemic areas of paragonimiasis. The ecological factors affecting Paragonimus larvae in the snails were also discussed. A total of 9 chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticieds was targeted to detect out from the tissues of snails. Out of 9 pesticides, aldrin, beta-BHC, p, p-DDT, dieldrin, DDE, lindane, heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide were eluted from the snails. The highest levels of the pesticides were mostly detected out in the snails collected from the Donghae-Chun area of Haman and the Kangwha area of Kyongki-Do, where the lowest infection rates of trematode cercariae (0~0.5%) were revealed. The possibilities that the residual pesticides in the freshwater animals including Semisulcospira snails might be transferable to humans were also discussed.
This study is for finding a geoscientific factor for clarifying the source soil of the ancient earthenware finding. The used samples were the earthenware, soil and rocks, which were collected at the Gyeongju, Gyeongsan and Haman area. The chemical and mineralogical study for the samples were carried out for understanding the change of mineralogical and chemical composition among them. The mineralogical compositions of the earthenware are different from those of the soils from the surrounding area, which suggests that the mineralogical approach for clarifying the source soil of the earthenware should be difficult. Major element compositions of the earthenware also are different from those of the surrounding soils, which suggests that the comparison of the chemical composition using the major elements might be difficult for deducing the source soil of the earthenware. However, PAAS-normalized rare earth element (REE) patterns and Nd model ages among the rock, soils and earthenware from the same sampling sites show similar characteristics one another compared to those of the major element compositions. Nd-Sr isotopic systematics among the earthenware, soils and rocks also show a close relationship. Our results suggest that REE and Nd-Sr isotope geochemistry might be more useful than the other geochemical technique in clarifying the source soils of the ancient earthenware.
Ulsan granite is plotted mainly in the region of syeno-granite of the Streckeisen diagram, which consists with those of iron related granites in the area of Kimhae-Mulgum, while Chindong granites and Yucheon-Eonyang granites are plotted in the regions of granodiorite-diorite and monzo-granite, respectively. These granites show a differentiation trend of calc-alkaline magma, and their magmatic evolution from intermediate to acidic rocks is consistant with the general crystallization path of the Cretaceous granitic rocks in the Gyeongsang basin. The difference index (D.I.) is 70~90 for Ulsan granite, which lies between 35~80 of Chindong granites and 85~95 of Yucheon-Eonyang granites. These granites are distinguishable from each other by variation patterns of chemical elements. For instance, there is clear difference in content of some major and trace elements between Ulsan granite and Cu-related Chindong granites: Ulsan granite has high content of K (2.68%) and Ba (636 ppm), and low content of Ca (1.07%), Mg (0.50%) and Sr (185 ppm), whereas Chindong granites has less content of K (1.62%) and Ba (382 ppm), and higher content of Ca (3.75%), Mg (1.42%) and Sr (405 ppm). However, the content of Ulsan granite overlaps partly those of Yucheon-Eonyang granites, which are apparently dividable from Chindong granites. There is an usual trend that Cu content is high in Chindong granites of Cu province and Zn content is higher in Yucheon-Eonyang granites of Pb-Zn province. But it is unusual that Cu and Zn are higher in Ulsan granite (34 ppm, 74 ppm) than in Chindong granites (15 ppm, 22 ppm) and Yucheon-Eonyang granites (14 ppm, 43 ppm). This may be due to the reason that Ulsan granite is productive and Cu-Zn minerals are associated with iron ores. Productive Chindong granites in Haman-Gunbug area and Yuchon-Eonyang granites near ore deposits have higher content of Cu and Zn than Ulsang granite. Therefore, it is expected that chemical variation patterns of granites are applicable to distinguish mineral commodity of ore deposits (iron, copper, or lead-zinc) related with the granites in the Gyeongsasng basin.
Recently, quantitative analyses of food web structure based on carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes are widely applied to environmental assessments as well as ecological researches of various ecosystems, particularly rivers and streams. In the present study, we analyzed carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of POM (both planktonic and attached forms), zooplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish collected from 6 sites located at Nakdong River. Samples were collected from upstream areas of 5 weirs (Sangju, Gangjeong-Goryeong, Dalseong, Hapcheon-Changnyeong, and Changnyeong-Haman Weirs) and one downstream area of Hapcheon-Changnyeong Weir in dry season (June) and after rainy season (September). We suggested ranges of their carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios and calculated their trophic levels in the food web to compare their temporal and spatial variations. Trophic levels of organisms were relatively higher in Sangju Weir located at upper part of Nakdong River, and decreased thereafter. However, the trophic levels were recovered at the Changnyeong-Haman Weir, the lowest weir in the river. The trophic level calculated by nitrogen stable isotope ratios showed more reliable ranges when they were calculated based on zooplankton than POM used as baseline. The suggested quantitative ecological information of the majority of biological communities in Nakdong River would be helpful to understand the response of river food web to environmental disturbances and can be applied to various further researches regarding the quantitative approaches for the understanding food web structure and function of river ecosystems as well as restoration.
On the ArcGIS 9.2 program in Gyeongsangbug-Do and Daegu areas, distribution ratios of rock types and geologic ages were obtained from the 1 : 250,000 scaled digital geologic and geomorphic maps. The obtained distribution ratios here will be used the geologic information data for industrialization and development planning of rock resources. The Gyeongsangbug-Do area consists of 86 rock types that can be divided into 10 large groups in geologic age. Their geologic distribution ratios show the decreasing in the order of Cretaceous, Precambrian, Jurassic, Quaternary, Age-unknown and Tertiary, all of which occupy the prevailing ratio of 96.30% in the area. Of which, sixteen rock types are somewhat dominant ones (64.04%). They are of Precambrian Yulri group and granite gneiss of the Yeongnam metamorphic complex and biotite gneiss of the Sobaegsan metamorphic complex, Age-unknown granite, Jurassic granite, Cretaceous Gasongdong and Dogyedong formations of the Yeongyang sub-basin, Nagdong and Chunsan formations and intermediate-basic volcanics of Euiseong sub-basin, Jinju and Jindong formations and andesite-andesitic tuff of Milyang sub-basin, and hornblende granite, and Quaternary alluvium. They show relatively narrow ranges of 2.07-6.53% in geologic distribution in exception of Jurassic granite showing 13.14%. And the rest 70 rock types appear to very narrow range between 0.01 and 1.94 %. On the other hand, twelve rock types are developed in the Daegu area. Their geologic ages appear to be classified into Cretaceous and Quaternary occupying 86.05% and 11.39%, respectively. Seven rock types take possession of 94.04% among the all rocks. The major rock types are Jinju formation of the Sindong group, Chilgog, Haman and Jindong formations of the Hayang group, andesite and andesitic tuff, hornblende granite and Quaternary alluvium. With exception of andesite and andesitic tuff of 37.40%, the types show slightly wide range of 3.25-17.39%, which apparently differ trends from that of Gyeongsangbug-Do area. And the rest of rock types have narrow ranges of 0.22-1.81% in the Daegu area.
In order to improve nearly unarable soils, poor in humus and poorly drained coarse textured, derived from fluvio marine deposit; a factorial experiment have been conducted to find out the influence of compost, increased potassium application and split application of potassium on the yield and germination of soybean variety Haman. The result obtained arid discussed may be summarized as follows. (1) The soybean yield increase was significant by the application of compost, increased amount of potassium and split application of potassium. (2) The application of compost significantly increased the numbers of germination. (3) The increased amount of potash and split application of potash fertilizer showed an apparent effect on the increase of germination and grain numbers per plant. (4) There was a positive relation between the number of grains per plant and the number of pods per plant, however, the increased numbers of pods per plant has not a direct effect for the increase of soybean yield per unit area. (5) Above results suggests that the improvement of nearly unarable Woolsuk Island soils derived from fluvio marine coarse material may be possible by the application of compost, increased amount and split application of potash fertilizer.
The Cretaceous basaltic rocks in Gyeongsang Basin are temporally and spatially dispersed widely in thick sedimentary piles: Chilgog basaltic rock (CGB) and Cheongyongsa basaltic rock (CSB) in the Shindong Group, and Hakbong basaltic rocks (HBB), Osibbong basalt (OSB), Secheondong basaltic rocks (SCB), Haman basaltic rocks (HAB), Hama basaltic rocks (HMB), and Chaeyaksan basaltic rocks (CYB) in the Hayang Group, upwardly in their stratigraphy. Chilgog basaltic rock is merely identified as pebbles in the Shilla Conglomerate and its provenance has not been found, and it is characteristics that the volcanics except Osibbong basalt and Chaeyaksan basaltic rocks are very small in both of their thickness and extension. Petrochemical diversity of the basaltic rocks are revealed; OSB and SCB distributed in the Yeongyang Minor Basin preserve the calc-alkaline natures in major and immobile minor element geochemistry, but CGB, HBB, HAB, and CYB reflect that they might be originated from calc-alkaline basaltic magma of volcanic arc in continental margin area by trace elements and altered to alkaline suites in the viewpoint of their major element geochemistry. Major and trace element geochemistry of CSB and HMB suggests that they may be derived from within -plate alkaline magma contaminated by the upper continental crust, especially in the case of the former.
It has been tried to find effective biological control measures involved in nature of soil suppressiveness to fusarium wilt of cncumber caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum Owen. Total 28 soil samples were obtained from Jinju, Haman, Namji, Milyang and Suncheon vinyl house area. The disease response of test soil was quantified in terms of DI50 value which caculated from log-probit transformation of diseases response curves. Soils designated 5 from Jinju, 7 from Suncheon, 22 from Namji were recognized as suppressive to fusarium wilt of cucumber. This suppressiveness was completely nullified after autoclave. The disease suppressiveness of tested soil did not indicate any consistency according to either chemical property or texture of soil. Conidial germination, induction and germination of chlamydospore were markedly inhibited in supprerssive soil compared to those in intermediate or conducive soils, however, mycelial lysis did not appear to have direct relationship with disease suppressiveness of given soil. Population density of fluorescent Pseudomonads and Bacillus spp. in the soil originated from different degree of suppressiveness were not different significantly but the number of lytic bacterial plaques measured by triple layer agar method was remarkably higher in suppressive soil than that in intermediate or conducive soil.
Chindong granites are classified into granodiorite, tonalite and quartz-diorite, and Yucheon - Eonyang granites into monzo-granite by the Streckeisen diagram. These granitic rocks of Cretaceous age show trend of calc-alkaline magma, and the magmatic evolution from basic to acidic rocks is consistant with the general crystallization path of the Cretaceous granitic rocks in the Gyeongsang basin. On the basis of petrological and petrochemical data, variation of major elements (K, Na, Ca, Mg) and trace elements (Rb, Sr, Ba) including ore metals (Cu, Pb, Zn) in the Cretaceous granitic rocks were studied in detail in order to investigate geochemical difference of the granitic rocks in relation to mineralization between Cu province and Pb-Zn province in the Gyeongsang basin. There is clear difference in content of the major elements between Chindong granites and Yucheon-Eonyang granites : Chindong granites have low content of K (1.62%) and Na (2.53%), and high content of Ca (3.75%) and Mg (1.42%) whereas Yucheon-Eonyang granites have high content of K (3.56-3.60%), and low content of Ca (0.96-0.26%) and Mg (0.26-0.21%). There is also clear difference in content of trace lithophile elements between Chindong granites and Yucheon-Eonyang, granites : Chindong granites have low content of Rb (86ppm) and Ba (330ppm), and high content of Sr (405ppm) while Yucheon-Eonyang, granites have high content of Rb (144-161ppm) and Ba (983-1030ppm), and low content of Sr (157-136ppm). The lithophile trace elements of Rb and Sr vary with close relationship to major elements of K and Ca, respectively. Therefore, Chindong granites are much easily distinguished from Yucheon-Eonyang granites by using relationship of K with Rb and Ca with Sr : K<3%, Rb<100ppm, Ca<2% and Sr>200ppm for Chindong granites, and K>3%, Rb>100ppm, Ca<2%, and Sr<200ppm for Yucheon-Eonyang granites. There is not clear difference in content of trace ore metals between Chindong granites and Yucheon-Eonyang granites : Chindong granites of the Cu province have low Cu content (15ppm) which is nearly equal to 13-14ppm of Yucheon-Eonyang granites of the Pb-Zn province, and Yucheon-Eonyang granites have Pb content (29-27ppm) which is rather lower than 37ppm of Chindong granites. But Cu is anomalously high in the mineralized part of Chindong granites in Gunbuk-Haman area, and Zn is apparently higher in Yucheon-Eonyang granites (51-37ppm) than in Chindong granites (29ppm). K/Pb ratio is also c1early distinguishable between Chindong granites (<850) and Yucheon-Eonyang granites (>850). Thus, it may be possible to apply geochemical difference of the granites to distinguish whether a Cretaceous granitic body is Cu related rock or Pb-Zn related rock, and whether it belongs to Cu province or Pb-Zn province in the Gyeongsang basin.
