The pseudospectral method for stability analysis was used to find the most influential disturbance mode for transition of plane channel flows and Blasius flow at their critical Reynolds numbers. A number of various oblique disturbance waves were investigated for their pseudospectra and resolvent norm contours in each flow, and an exhaustive search method was employed to find the disturbing waves to which the flows become most unstable. In plane Poiseuille flow an oblique disturbance with a wavelength of 3.59h (where h is the half channel width) at an angle $28.7^{\circ}$ was found to be the most influential for the flow transition to turbulence, and in plane Couette flow it is an oblique wave with a wavelength of 3.49h at an angle of $19.4^{\circ}$. But in Blasius flow it was found that the most influential mode is a normal wave with a wavelength of $3.44{\delta}_{999}$. These results imply that the most influential disturbance mode is closely related to the fundamental acoustic wave with a certain shear sheltering in the respective flow geometry.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of light intensity and wavelength on the growth of Tetraselmis suecica and Tetraselmis tetrathele. These species were exposed to a blue light-emitting diode (LED; max=450 nm), a yellow LED (max=590 nm), a red LED (max=630 nm) and a fluorescent lamp (three wavelengths). The maximum growth rates (${\mu}_{max}$) of T. suecica and T. tetrathele under a red LED were 1.12/day and 0.95/day, respectively. Under a yellow LED, growth rates were 70% of the values for red wavelength, with low half-saturation constants (Ks). The optimum light source to ensure economically effective and productive growth in a Tetraselmis culture system (Photo-Bioreactor) would thus appear to be a three-phase culture, wherein a yellow LED is used during the lag phase and initial exponential phase to increase growth rate, followed by a red LED during the middle exponential phase to maximize growth rate, and finally a yellow LED again during the late exponential phase and stationary phase to achieve increased yield of useful bioactive substances.

Optical switching will be applied in datacenter networks because electronic switching is costly and power-consuming. In this paper, considering the ring-based interconnection using optical switching in the core of a datacenter, we study the home circuit (HC) construction for the labeled optical burst switching with home circuit (LOBS-HC), a new paradigm trying to share wavelengths among the HCs from the same source. In particular, aiming to construct HCs dynamically and properly, a scheme named optimal path matching and symmetric HC matching (OPM-SHM) is proposed. The main idea of OPM-SHM is to dynamically construct HCs by sharing wavelength(s) not only among the same-source HCs but also with symmetric HCs which have different sources other than the original LOBS-HC features. The simulation results demonstrate that OPM-SHM achieves better performance than some other methods in terms of burst loss rate and wavelength utilization of physical links. More specially, it maintains good load balancing for the datacenter network using an LOBS-HC ring. In addition, due to the symmetric feature of SHM, the proposed scheme can decrease the upper bound of the average hop count of the routing paths to half of the ring size.
Narrowing the spectral linewidth and improving the wavelength stability of high-power laser diodes (HPLDs) are both in high demand for rapidly maturing industrial laser applications. In this study, we investigate the spectral behavior of a commercial HPLD bar module composed of 19 laser diodes (LDs) in a single-layered bar with a built-in volume Bragg grating (VBG) and an additional cascaded VBG. Optical loss due to the extra cascaded VBG is kept below 5% when the optical output is 5 W or more. The full width at half maximum of the Fabry-Perot peak from the cascaded VBG is reduced to about 12.4% and 29.1% at the edge (1st LD) and center (10th LD) of the HPLD bar module respectively, compared to using only a built-in VBG at an optical power of 10 W or more. In addition, fine wavelength tuning is achieved by temperature control of the extra VBG, and the obtained wavelength-tuning range amounts to about 10.6 pm/K.

In this paper, a planar printed hybrid short/open-ended slot antenna with capacitive coupling feed strips is proposed for hepta-band mobile applications. The proposed antenna is comprised of a slotted ground plane on the top plane and two capacitive coupling feed strips with a chip inductor on the bottom plane. At the low frequency band, the short-ended long slot fed by strip 1 generates its half-wavelength resonance mode, whereas the T-shaped open ended slot fed by strip 2 generates its quarter-wavelength resonance mode for the high frequency band. The antenna provides a wide bandwidth covering GSM850/GSM900/DCS/PCS/UMTS/LTE2300/LTE2500 operation bands. Moreover, the antenna occupies a small volume of $15mm{\times}50mm{\times}1mm$. The operating principle of the proposed antenna and the simulation/measurement results are presented and discussed.
The characteristics of $S\breve{o}lc$ filters in $X^{(2)}$ nonlinear photonic crystals, periodically poled lithium niobate ($LiNbO_3$), were investigated by the Jones matrix method. The transmittance increases and the full width half maximum of the filter becomes narrow as the duty ratio increases. However, the filtering wavelength does not change. The transmittance at the filtering wavelength is over 95% when the duty ratio is larger than 0.35.
A new lithium niobate optical modulator with a polymer buffer layer on Ni in-diffused optical waveguide is proposed for the fist time, successfully fabricated and examined at a wavelength of 1.3 ${\mu}m$. The experimental results show that the measured half-wave voltage is of ${\sim}10$ V and the total measured fiber-to-fiber insertion loss is of ${\sim}-6.4$ dB for a 40 mm long waveguide at a wavelength of 1.3 ${\mu}m$, respectively.
Many numerical methods have been developed since 1961, but unresolved issues remain. This study developed a numerical method to address these issues and determine the coefficients and properties of rotational waves with a shear current in a finite water depth. The number of unknown constants was reduced significantly by introducing a wavelength-independent coordinate system. The reference depth was calculated independently using the shooting method. Therefore, there was no need for partial derivatives with respect to the wavelength and the reference depth, which simplified the numerical formulation. This method had less than half of the unknown constants of the other method because Newton's method only determines the coefficients. The breaking limit was calculated for verification, and the result agreed with the Miche formula. The water particle velocities were calculated, and the results were consistent with the experimental data. Dispersion relations were calculated, and the results are consistent with other numerical findings. The convergence of this method was examined. Although the required series order was reduced significantly, the total error was smaller, with a faster convergence speed.

In this paper, novel internal antenna with its controllable resonant frequency is presented for triple-band or over mobile handsets. The operating range can include GSM(880${\~}$960 MHz), GPS(1,575$\pm$10 MHz), DCS(1,710${\~}$1,880 MHz), US-PCS(1,850${\~}$l,990 MHz), and W-CDMA(1,920${\~}$2,170 MHz). The proposed antenna is realized by combination of a half wavelength loaded line and a shorted monopole. A single shorting and feeding points are used and they are common to both antenna structures. By controlling a value of lumped inductance element between shorting point and ground plane, the antenna provides enough bandwidth to cover DCS, US-PCS, and W-CDMA respectively. When these higher bands are controlled by the values of inductance, resonant characteristics in GSM and GPS bands are maintained. In this work, maximum value of the inductor is limited within 3.3 nH to mitigate gain degradation from frequency tuning. As a result, measured maximum gain of antenna is -0.58${\~}$-0.30 dBi in the GSM band, -0.57${\~}$0.43 dBi in the GPS band and 0.38${\~}$1.15 dBi in the DCS/US-PCS/W-CDMA band. In higher band, the proposed antenna is certified that resonant frequency of about 240 MHz can be effectively controlled within gain variation of about 0.77 dB by simulation and measurement.
The length of optical fiber in dispersion-managed link combined with optical phase conjugation to compensate for signal distortion caused by chromatic dispersion and nonlinear Kerr effect is a major factor determining the compensation effectiveness. The dispersion-managed link consists of several fiber spans in which standard single mode fiber and dispersion compensating fiber are arranged. In this paper, the compensation effect in the link that changes residual dispersion per span only by adjusting the length of one type of optical fiber, which is different in the first half link and the second half link with respect to optical phase conjugator (OPC), has been investigated. It was confirmed that the best compensation for 960 Gb/s wavelength division multiplexed signal could be obtained in the dispersion-managed link, in which the cumulative dispersion profile is symmetric around the OPC, and the cumulative dispersion amount is all positive in the first half, and all the cumulative dispersion amount is distributed negatively in the second half.
