  • FIMS/SPEAR is a dual-channel far-ultraviolet imaging spectrograph on board the Korean microsatellite STSAT-1, which was launched on 2003 September 27. The primary mission goal of FIMS was to conduct a survey of diffuse far UV emissions in our Galaxy. For this purpose, FIMS completed a survey of about 84% of the sky during its operation of a year and a half. The present study aims to analyze this survey data made in the far UV wavelengths to understand the global evolution of our Galaxy. The far UV wavelength band is known to contain important cooling lines of hot gas: hence, the study will show how the hot gas in our Galaxy, produced by stellar winds and supernova explosion, evolves globally to cool down and become mixed with ambient cooler medium. One of the main findings from previous analyses of the FIMS data is that molecular hydrogen exists ubiquitously in our Galaxy. This discovery leads to another important scientific question: how is molecular hydrogen distributed in our Galaxy and how does it affect globally the evolution of our Galaxy as a cold component? Hence, the present study will cover both the hot and cold components of the ISM, which will also provide the opportunity to investigate the interactions between the two.

  • The phased array transducer has two distinct advantages. One is rapid scanning comparing with the conventional mechanical or manual scanning system. Therefore, output image is represented in real-time. The other is the dynamic focusing and the dynamic steering of ultrasonic beam. Only the delay times that are controlled electrically are used to focus and to steer beam without any lenses or wedges. In this study, the profile of the ultrasonic beam for the phased array transducer has been simulated in the Huygens principle with varying the inter-element spacing of the linear phased array transducer. From the result of this study, it was found that the ultrasonic beam spread wider as the inter-element spacing was decreased. However, the focusing effect was improved, even when the number of the element was not big. In addition, there was grating lobes that are constructed when the inter-element spacing is more than half wavelength. However, this grating lobe has lower amplitude than the main lobe.

  • Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive optical method which measures arterial oxygen saturation with two different wavelength. We can obtain the pulsating component of the arterial blood superimposed on DC level attenuated by venous blood, skin and other nonpulsatile components. This study is based on computing algorithm of oxygen saturation using the integral ratio of pulsatile components. In this algorithm, we used the half cycle of the pulsatile signal rely on arterial contraction. It's period is about 1/4 in 1 cycle. In the result, Our algorithm with 1/4 period of 1 cycle is similar to existing model. Because of removal that A part have low amplitude and possession in long term from calculating, the effect of the motion-artifact is decrease.

  • Passive type mufflers installed on every car haute inherent problem of lowering engine power and fuel efficiency caused by backpressure which is byproduct of complex internal structure. Recent improvements like installing a calve to change exhaust gas path depending on power requirement and rpm have only marginally improved performance. Tremendous amount of recent research works on active exhaust noise control have failed to commercialize because of numerous physical and economical reasons. In this paper, a unique seal-active muffler using difference of transmission paths is presented. In this system exhaust pipe is divided into two and joined again downstream. Exhaust noise is reduced by destructive interference when two-divided noise join again with transmission paths'difference which is half of the wavelength of a main noise frequency. One divided path has a sliding mechanism to change length thereby transmission path length difference is adjusted to entwine rpm change. The proposed system has minimal backpressure and does not need a secondary sound source like a speaker so it can overcome many problems of failed active noise control methods. We have verified proposed system's superior performance by simulation and comparison experiment with passive mufflers.

  • In this study plastic optical fibers (POFs) were considered as light-transmitting media and substrates for the potential use in photocatalytic environmental purification system. After the characteristics of POFs in terms of light transmittance and absorption were determined at the beginning, the further investigation was performed through the photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE), iso-propanol and etc. with TiO$_2$-coated optical fiber reactor systems (POFR). It is concluded that the use of POFs is preferred to quartz optical fibers (QOFs) since the advantages such as ease of handling, lower cost, relatively reasonable light attenuation at the wavelength of near 400nm can be obtained. Various geometrical reactor shapes have been constructed and applied for the last one and half years. For the use of POF in water phase treatment, however, more detailed scientific and engineering aspects should be envisaged. This case requires a suitable mixture to obtain more stable and innocuous immobilization of photocatalyst on POF. To overcome this disadvantage, metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) was conducted in a fluidized bed to deposit thin films of titania on glass and alumina beads. Those can be used as photocatalysis for the removal of pollutants especially in liquid phases.

  • The present study focuses on the case of developing flow with in a channel containing a long array of sinusoidal waves (2a/${\lambda}$=0.1, ${\lambda}$=h, ${\lambda}$ is the wavelength, 2a is the wave height, h is the mean channel depth) at the bottom wall. The Reynolds number defined with channel height, h and the mean velocity, U, is Re=6,700. The channel is sufficiently long such that transition is completed and the flow is fully developed over the downstream half of the channel. For the case of an incoming steady flow with no resolved turbulence, the instantaneous flow fields in the transition region are characterized by the formation of arrays of highly-organized large-scale hairpin vortices whose dimensions scale with that of the roughness elements. The paper explains the mechanism for the formation of these arrays of hairpin vortices and shows these eddies play the primary role in the formation of the large-scale streaks of high and low velocity over the wavy wall region. The presence of resolved turbulence in the incoming flow, reduces the streamwise distance needed for the streaks to develop over the wavy region, but does not affect qualitatively the transition process. In the fully-developed region, isolated and trains of large-scale hairpins play an important role in the dynamics of the streaks over the wavy wall.

  • We have performed computer simulation to obtain electro-optic characteristics of reflective hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal displays driven by fringe field. The results show that the optimal retardation value of the cell is $0.289{\mu}m$, which allows for the cell to have a practical cell gap of larger than $3{\mu}m$ when manufacturing. A reflectance of the dark state is only 0.114% for an incident light 550nm. At this condition, the light efficiency of white state reaches 92.7%. Further, we have studied a new reflective display with polarizer, optical compensation with half plate, LC plus reflector. The display with optimized cell parameters shows low wavelength dispersion and the contrast ratio greater than 5 over exists about $120^{\circ}$ in vertical direction and $160^{\circ}$ in horizontal direction.

  • We prepared organic light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) with a squarylium(Sq)-doped aluminum quinoline(Alq3) emission layer by the vapor deposition method. We discussed their electro-luminescence(EL) and electrical properties. The EL from Sq had a peak wavelength of 670nm and a half-width of 30nm. Only the EL from So(purely red) could be observed at the doping concentration of over 15mol%, but the luminance were low (0.21cd/$m^2$, 0.1cd/$m^2$) and EL efficiency was under the $10^{-2}$W. Although Sq molecules seemed to act as trap site in Alq3 molecules, they acted as carrier drafts site at doping concentration of over 5mol%.

  • I propose a vector passive harmonic mode-locked fiber laser based on topological insulator Bi2Se3 interacting with a fiber taper with a diameter of 7 μm. The particles of topological insulator are deposited uniformly onto the fiber taper with light pressure effect. By incorporating the fabricated saturable absorber into an Er-doped fiber laser cavity, stable mode-locked fiber is obtained. Due to the intense evanescent field of the fiber taper, strong confinement of light enhances the nonlinearity of the laser cavity, and passive harmonic mode-locking is performed. I observe a maximum harmonic mode-locking of 356th, corresponding to a frequency of 3.57 GHz. The pulse duration is 824 fs, and the full width at half maximum of the spectrum is about 8.2 nm. The polarization dependent loss of the saturable absorber is ~ 2.5 dB in the wavelength range of the C band. As the cavity contains no other polarization dependent device, the mode-locked laser is functioning in the vector state. The harmonic order vs pump power is investigated. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the highest frequency mode-locked fiber laser based on Bi2Se3. Experimental results indicate that the topological insulator Bi2Se3 functioning with a thin fiber taper is effective for vector harmonic mode-locking.
