In this paper, a new type of Yagi-Uda antenna that operates in the terahertz frequencies is designed. The proposed Yagi-Uda antenna can obtain high input resistance of approximately $2000{\Omega}$ at the resonance frequency by using a full-wavelength dipole instead of a half-wavelength dipole as the driver element. The current leakage into the bias line was minimized by applying the photonic bandgap structure to the bias line. By designing the antenna on a thin substrate, the impedance lowering of an antenna caused by the relative dielectric constant of the substrate was prevented and the end-fire radiation pattern which is the original radiation characteristic of the Yagi-Uda antenna could be obtained. We expect that the proposed Yagi-Uda antenna can achieve increased terahertz output power by improving the impedance mismatching problem with the photomixer.

Effects of the random fluctuation in grating half-period have been studied by an effective index transfer matrix method in DFB lasers. The laser facets are assumed to be perfectly antireflection coated, and the period fluctuation is modeled as a Gaussian random variable. The random fluctuation breaks spectral symmetry in both uniform-grating and quarter-wavelength -shifted(QWS) DFB lasers, and decreases the effective coupling coefficient. This leads to increased average mirror loss of ${\pm}$1 modes and reduced stopband width in uniform grating DFB lasers, and degradation in the wavelength accuracy and the single mode stability in QWS-DFB lasers. Threshold gain difference decreases with increasing period fluctuation irrespective of grating coupling coefficient in QWS-DFB lasers, while spatial hole-burning effect is exacerbated or alleviated when the normalized coupling coefficient is lower and higher than 1.5, respectively.
A doppler log is the typical device which can measure the ship's speed over the ground directly, by means of doppler effect of the underwater ultrasonic wave, which involves the error due to the sea bottom inclination, the trim and the incorrect transducer installation etc. The present doppler log adopts a single transducer, faced in the direction of themain beam, and therefore it is unable to correct the beam direction to eliminate the above mentioned error. Moreover, the frequencyis also limitted in a comparatively high range for getting a sharp beam with single transducer, and the speed over the ground can not be detectable at the deep sea, for an instance, over 200 meters. This paper describes a theoretical consideration for the doppler log error and an analysis by a computer on the observed speed data by a full size model ship. The result is verified that the most of doppler log error is caused by the ultrasonic beam angle of transducer. To eliminate the doppler log error due to the incorrect transducer installation and also to sharpen the beam for lower frequency range to expand measurable sea depth, this paper proposes a method of controlling the directivity adopting a linear transducer array and of controlling the directivity by the control of exciting current, and investigates by the computer simulation and make experiment with magnetostrictive ferrite transducer of 28, 50 and 75KHz. The experimental results are shown well coincide with the measured ones, and they are revealed that in case where the transducer interval is greater than 1 wavelength, the effective control of the beam direction is hardly performed with keeping adequate beam width and side lobe level. It is concluded that 6-elements array with inter element space of a half wavelength can make comparatively sharp beam and low side lobe level. The results obtained here will contribute very much to the improvement of the performance of doppler log.

The SiO2/TiO2 multilayer thin films used for narrow band pass filter were fabricated using E-beam evaporation method. The narrow band pass filter was used to enhance the resolution of spectroscopy and sensor applications with near infrared (NIR) light source. The narrow band pass filter with multilayer thin films were designed with Essential Macleod program. The multilayers of SiO2/TiO2 with 32 layers were deposited on the silicon encapsulation of IR with peak wavelength (λp) of 660 nm and NIR LEDs with λp of 830 nm, 880 nm, and 955 nm. After NIR light passed through the narrow band pass filter, the full width of half maximum of 33.4~48.6 nm became narrow to 20~24 nm owing to the absorption of photons with short or long wavelength of designed band of 20 nm. The SiO2/TiO2 band pass filter fabricated in this study can be used for sensor, optoelectronics, and NIR spectroscopy applications.

In this paper, a half wave-length microstrip antenna was proposed to be able to continuously tune the resonant frequency in the stated area of UHF ISM band. By loading varactor diodes at both edges of the half wavelength antenna, where the electric field is the strongest, and varying the voltage in order to tune the electrical resonance length continuously, it is possible to automatically recover the resonant frequency and input impedance shifted by surrounding environment. When the microstrip antenna(center resonant frequency: 425 MHB) was tested, by adjusting the each voltages of varactor diodes from DC 0.6 to BC 3.0 volts, the resonant frequency under 20 dB return loss was varied 385 to 465 MHz. The peak gain was -0.2 dBd and return loss -10 dB bandwidth was 3.3 MHz(0.8 %).

In this paper, the problem of electromagnetic transmission through slits in two parallel conducting plates which separate two half spaces is considered. The coupled integral equations for the electric field distributions over the slits are developed for the case that the TM polarized plane wave is incident on the slit and solved by the method of moments. The transmitted power beyond the slit-perforated conducting parallel plates is computed in order to check the variations of the coupled power through slits against some parameters such as the incident angle of the TM polarized wave, slit width, lateral distance between two slits, and distance between the conducting plates. When the lateral distance between two slits approaches near the multiples of half wavelengths, the transmission resonance (maximum power transmission) is observed. If the slit width in the incident side is narrow and the distance between conducting plates is small compared to the wavelength, the maximum of transmitted power is observed to be nearly independent of the incident angle and slit width. In addition, the mechanism of the transmission resonance in the present geometry is explained using a simplified geometry and its equivalent circuit.

In this paper, we present a computer-aided design(CAD) technique for minimizing the phase shift in microstrip PIN diode attenuators due to the junction capacitance in the equivalent circuit model of PIN diode. Microstrip PIN diode attenuators use the characteristics which the reactance of microstrip line changes from inductive to capacitive as the frequency sweeps across the band. Microstrip PIN diode attenuator designed utilizes the quarter-wavelength transmission line terminating with the half-moon radial stub, which is designed for negligible phase shifting effect over the intersted bandwidth. The attenuator has similar phase shift at 0 dB and 10 dB of attenuation within average $1.27^{\circ}$ between 1.2GHz and 1.9GHz. The input and output return losses between 1.4 GHz and 1.9 GHz are less than 10 dB over the attenuation range of 0 dB and 10 dB.

Integrated-optic symmetric/asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers at $1.3{\mu}m$ wavelength were studied as sensing part for electric-field measurement system. The devices were simulated based on the BPM software and fabricated utilizing Ti-diffused $LiNbO_3$ channel optical waveguides and lumped-type electrodes. A half-wave voltage of $V_{\pi}$=6.6V and modulation depth of 100% and 75% for a symmetric structure were measured for 200Hz and 1kHz electrical signal bandwidth, respectively. By the way, almost half-maximum power transmission was observed for asymmetric interferometers with ${\pi}$/2 intrinsic phase difference. Expected experimental measurements were observed for 1kHz electrical signal bandwidth.
In this paper, two white light emitting diodes(LEDs) were manufactured by using two kinds of yellow phosphor, YAG:Ce and $(Sr,Ba)_2SiO_4:Eu$, and their spectroscopic properties were compared and analyzed. We found that the asymmetric double sigmoidal function can be applied to both white LEDs to obtain the center wavelength, the half width, and the skewness parameters. According to this analysis, the half width of the emitting spectrum of silicate phosphor was smaller than that of YAG phosphor, indicating smaller color rendering index. However, the silicate phosphor exhibited better color stability depending on the driving current than the YAG phosphor. The current dependence of the luminous efficacy of both white LEDs was investigated, which showed that efficacy decreased monotonically with current. The efficacy of the silicate-based white LED was lower than that of the YAG-based LED by about 10~12 lm/W.
In this paper, a half-wavelength folded-slot antenna, which can be applied to RF module for 3G mobile communications by which security lights are monitored and controlled, is proposed. The proposed antenna can be regarded as modified folded-slot structure which has the size reduced to a half of conventional ${\lambda}g$ folded-slot antenna and can be placed at the ground plane edge. In spite of that, the proposed antenna still maintain the advantage of conventional folded-slot antenna that input impedance is close to $50{\Omega}$. The antenna is designed and fabricated within the upper space of $40.5{\times}10mm^2$ on $40.5{\times}62mm^2$ substrate for 3G mobile communication frequency band. The measured impedance bandwidth and antenna gain are 390 MHz and 2 dBi respectively.
