In order to verify the effect of Sineungyangjin-Dan on alopecia, I experimented the hair regrowth of the normal mice and of the high butter diet-pretreated mice by feeding each group of mice a certain amount of ethanol extract of Sineungyangjin-Dan and water extract and thus obtained the results as follow; 1. The ethanol extract of Sineungyangjin-Dan was proved to promote the hair regrowth of the hair-removed normal mice. 2. 360mg/kg ethanol extract of Sineungyangjin-Dan was proved to have the effect of promoting hair regrowth by restraining the increase of free cholesterol and triglyceride but by helping the increase of free fatty acid in skin. As a result of the above study Sineungyangjin-Dan was proved to have the effect of promoting hair regrowth.
Objective : The purpose of this study is to report the hair regrowth effect of Gagamyeonryunggobon-dan on ICR mice from measuring the change of diverse factors.Methods : Gagamyeonryunggobon-dan was treated by oral administration with 2.5㎎/㎏/day amount for 3 weeks per mouse everyday. Hair regrowth was estimated by change of morphology, angiogenesis, hair follicle activation. The change of morphology was observed with external, internal change and sebaceous gland. Angiogenesis was estimated by image analysis, capillary distribution and angiogenic chemokine(MIP-2). Hair follicle activation was estimated by PCNA, IGF-2 and serotonin.Results : 1. Gagamyeonryunggobon-dan treated group had more and thicker hairs than the group not treated. Especially well developed sebaceous glands were seen in dermis of treated group. 2. Gagamyeonryunggobon-dan treated group had more capillaries near hair follicles of subcutaneous layer and more 2019% MIP-2 positive activity than the group not treated. 3. Gagamyeonryunggobon-dan treated group increased positive activity up to 596% in PCNA, 187% in IGF-2 and 547% in serotonin more than the group not treated.Conclusion : These results shows that Gagamyeonryunggobon-dan have the hair regrowth effect through verifying change of morphology, angiogenesis, chemokines. Consequently Gagamyeonryunggobon-dan is expected to apply to take care of extensive hair loss symptoms.
Morus alba has been well known for its tonic effect or preventing of hypertension, aging, or diabetes mellitus in Asian countries. To evaluate the its effect on hair growth promotion, we performed the hair regrowth experiment with leaf, branch, root and fruit extract of Morus alba on animal model of C57BL/6 mouse. The hair regrowth effect was remarkable in the mouse treated branch and root extract (with what %), however, little effect on hair regrowth appeared on the mouse treated with leaf extract. Morus alba extract displayed antibacterial effects on Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas and Candida albicans. These results indicated that branch and root extract of Morus alba could be applicable for hair regrowth or prevention of hair loss in human.

Chemotherapy-induced alopecia and hair loss can be stressful in patients with cancer. The hair grows back, but sometimes the hair tends to stay thin. Therefore, understanding mechanisms regulating hair regeneration may improve the management of chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Previous studies have revealed that chemotherapeutic agents induce a hair follicle vascular injury. As hair growth is associated with micro-vessel regeneration, we postulated that the stimulation of angiogenesis might enhance hair regeneration. In particular, mice treated with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) showed delayed anagen initiation and reduced capillary density when compared with untreated controls, suggesting that the retardation of anagen initiation by 5-FU treatment may be attributed to the loss of perifollicular micro-vessels. We investigated whether the ETS transcription factor ETV2 (aka ER71), critical for vascular development and regeneration, can promote angiogenesis and hair regrowth in a 5-FU-induced alopecia mouse model. Tie2-Cre; Etv2 conditional knockout (CKO) mice, which lack Etv2 in endothelial cells, presented similar hair regrowth rates as the control mice after depilation. Following 5-FU treatment, Tie2-Cre; Etv2 CKO mice revealed a significant reduction in capillary density, anagen induction, and hair restoration when compared with controls. Mice receiving lentiviral Etv2 injection after 5-FU treatment showed significantly improved anagen induction and hair regrowth. Two-photon laser scanning microscopy revealed that enforced Etv2 expression restored normal vessel morphology after 5-FU mediated vessel injury. Our data suggest that vessel regeneration strategies may improve hair regrowth after chemotherapeutic treatment.
Bonogen shampoo is composed of several plant extracts which are known to be used in oriental medicine. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Bonogen shampoo on hair growth in an alopecia model of C57BL/6 mice. There were eight male and female experimental groups including distilled water(DW: negative control), a commercial shampoo[M], 3% minoxidil (MXD) and Bonogen shampoo(BNG). Dorsal skin hair of six-week-old mice was trimmed with an electric clipper carefully not to damage the skin. The next day, mice without skin scratch were selected, randomized and separated in 10 mice per group. The test compounds were topically treated with 0.15 ml per mouse or dorsal skin for 21 days daily and then washed thoroughly with DW. The hair regrowth was determined photographically at 0, 4, 7, 10, 15, 18, and 21 days and histologically at day 21. No clinical signs were observed in all mice. Although body weight was slightly increased in 3% MXD group than other groups, it was not significant. Hair regrowth began to be promoted after 14 days and appeared a distinct regrowth pattern in all animals by topical treatment of test compounds at 18 days. In particular, the topical treatment of bonogen shampoo or 3% MXD for 21 days to dorsal skin accelerated hair regrowth faster than DW or M shampoo. At 21 days, the hair regrowth promotion speed was in order of 3% MXD>BNG>M>DW. The bonogen shampoo or 3% MXD also promoted hair follicle elongation compared to the negative control. These results suggest that bonogen shampoo has hair growth promoting activities and may be useful for treatment of bald or alopecia.
Hwanggumgung (HGG) is a hair-care product which is composed of several plant extracts used in oriental medicine. This study was carried out to investigate effect of HGG on hair regrowth in a shaving model of C57BL6 mice. Five-week-old mice were acclimated for 1 week under 23$\pm$3$^{\circ}C$, 50$\pm10\%$ relative humidity and 12 h of a light/dark cycle before beginning experiment. There were four experimental groups including distilled water (D.W., control), 10$\%$ ethanol (EtOH, vehicle control), a positive control of 3$\%$ minoxidil (MXD), and HGG for female and male mice, respectively; Six-weeks old mice were trimmed by electric clippers so as not to damage the skin. The next day; mice without visible scraches were selected, randomized and separated in groups of 11 mice. The test compounds were topically treated with 0.15ml per mouse per day for 21 days. The hair regrowth was photographically and histologically determined during the experimental period of 21 days. Enzyme activities of $\gamma$-glutamyl transpeptidase and alkaline phosphatase were also determined using a rate assay method. There were no clinical signs in all experimental groups. The topical application of 3$\%$ MXD and HGG in female mice promoted hair regrowth earlier and faster than the control groups. In male mice, the topical application of 3$\%$ MXD and HGG also accelerated hair growth compared with the controls. Ten percent ethanol also promoted hair growth faster than D.W group. The histology of hair growth in experimental groups was strongly associated with the hair regrowth. 3$\%$ MXD and HGG promoted elongation of hair follicles compared with the controls in both female and male mice. Activities of alkaline phosphatase and $\gamma$-glutamyl transpeptidase, enzymes related to hair growth, significantly increased after treatments of 3$\%$ MXD and HGG for 2 weeks in both female and male mice (p < 0.05). These results suggest that HGG has hair growth promoting activities and it can be for treatment for alopecia.
Objective : This study was carried out to investigate effect of korean medicinal herbs-included hair tonic (MHT) and food (MF) on hair growth in an alopecia model of C57BL/6 mice. Methods : Six-weeks old mice were given laboratory rodent chow diet for 1 week. Then, we used a depilatory for hair removal on mice. The next day, mice were randomized and separated in 3 groups of 6 mice; normal group (N, vehicle epidermal application+normal diet-treated group), positive control group (C, 3% minoxidil sulfate epidermal application+normal diet-treated group), and the treatment group (T, HT epidermal application+ MF diet-treated group). The hair regrowth was determined by photograph, which was taken at 7, 14 and 21 days. And scoring indices, hair density and hair thickness, were evaluated by Folliscope at same day. In addition, the hair regrowth was analyzed insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) in the dorsal skin of mice. Results : As a result, not only external appearance but also hair density and hair thickness on dorsal skin were increased more in C, T groups than in N group at 21 days with mixed treatment. Therefore, distinct regrowth pattern is appeared by treatment of herbal tonic and natural food for 21 days. Also, the expressions of IGF-1 on dorsal skin were higher in C, T groups than in N group. Conclusion : These results suggested that this herbal hair tonic and natural food has hair growth promoting activities and may be useful for treatment of bald or alopecia.
Low-power laser(LPL) delivers a small amount of energy without elevation of tissue temperature. LPL has been reported to have biostimulation effects including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, regenerative, immunocorrective, and vasodilative effects. However, the effect of LPL on hair growth has rarely been studied. We investigated the effect of LPL on hair growth in the mouse. After depilation of back skin of mice, we classified the mice into 4 groups: control, laser irradiated group, $MoandMore^{(R)}$ applied group, and Spella $707^{(R)}$ applied group. Laser irradiation or application of these drugs were performed on the back skin of the mice for 30 days. The results are summarized as follows. Hair growth of control was first observed at 13 days after depilation, and complete hair regrowth was observed at 25 days. Hair growth of both laser irradiation group and $MoandMore^{(R)}$ applied group was first observed at 9 days after depilation, and complete hair regrowth was observed at 20 days. Hair growth of Spella $707^{(R)}$ applied group was firstly observed at the 9 days after depilation, and complete hair regrowth was observed at the 15 days. Hair growth started at the irradiation site in the laser irradiation group, but it started at the random sites in other groups. In conclusion LPL irradiation have a stimulating effect on the hair growth in the mouse.
NDM hair tonic is composed of several plant extracts which are known to be used in oriental medicine. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of NDM hair tonic on hair regrowth in an alopecia model of C57BL6 mice. Hair of six-weeks old mice were trimmed by electric clippers and electric shavers, so as not to damage the skin. The next day, mice without visible scraches were selected, randomized and separated in groups of 6 mice. There were four experimental groups including saline (negative control), 50% ethanol (vehicle control), 3% minoxidil (MXD), and NDM tonic. The test compounds were topically treated with 0.15 $m\ell$ per mouse per day for 2 weeks. The hair regrowth was determined photographically and histologically and the quantity of endocrine factors, IGF-1 and TGF-$\beta$, in the skin of mice was measured by PCR. No clinical signs were found in all animals. The topical treatment of NDM tonic for 2 weeks to dorsal skin accelerated hair regrowth faster than either the controls or MXD treatment. The NDM tonic treatment also promoted hair follicle development and elongation as compared with the controls or MXD treatment. Both NDM tonic and MXD treatment significantly increased the expression of IGF-1 and TGF-$\beta$ in the skin of C57BL6 mice as compared with the controls (p<0.05). These results suggest that NDM tonic has a hair growth activity and be useful for the treatment of baldness or alopecia.
Objective: Yikgeebohyul-tang (Yiqib$\check{u}$xu$\grave{e}$-t$\bar{a}$ng) is one of the representative prescriptions for invigoration of vitality and nourishing of the blood. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Yikgeebohyul-tang (Yiqib$\check{u}$xu$\grave{e}$-t$\bar{a}$ng) on hair regrowth and cytokine changes in a shaving model of C57BL6 mice. Method: Five-week-old mice were acclimated for 1 week at a temperature between $21-23^{\circ}C{\acute{E}}$, 40-60% relative humidity, and 12h of a light/dark cycle before beginning of the experiment. There were two groups including normal saline (control) and a positive control of oral intake of Yikgeebohyul-tang (Yiqib$\check{u}$xu$\grave{e}$-t$\bar{a}$ng) extract (sample) in 18 female mice. The test compounds were topically treated once a day over 14 days. The hair regrowth was photographically and histologically determined during the experimental period of 14 days. Revelation of TGF-${\beta}1$ and EGF were also determined using immunohistochemistry. In addition to that, IFN-$\gamma$, IL-4 and IL-10 were determined in serum. Results: Hair regrowth in the sample group was promoted earlier and faster than the control group, as shown by concentrations of hairs and thick-hair ratio in the sample group. TGF-${\beta}1$ was not revealed in either control or sample group. EGF was strongly positive in out root sheath of some thick hair of the sample group. Serum IFN-$\gamma$ was significantly decreased in the sample group compared with the control group at 7 experimental days. However, it was not significantly decreased at 14 experimental days. Serum IL-4 was significantly increased in the sample group compared with the control group at 7 experimental days. However, it was not significantly decreased at 14 experimental days. Serum IL-10 was decreased in the sample group compared with the control group, but with no real statistical significance. Conclusion: These results suggest that Yikgeebohyul-tang (Yiqib$\check{u}$xu$\grave{e}$-t$\bar{a}$ng) has hair growth promoting activity and it can be used for treatment of alopecia. Also, these effects relate to EGF revelation of hair roots, a decrease in serum IFN-$\gamma$, and an increase of serum IL-4.
