  • The history of the mankind, that is the history of the war, have been continued with the consecutive of the struggle and confrontation. In the history of many war, the most important factor of them is just the religion. so that today, for the mankind to long for the peace, all believers are charged with very important mission. Confronting with the 21th century, yet the war is not ceasing in an earth one side. At this time if we are to investigate the problem of real peace, we need to present uprightly the direction of basic religious factor and solution. In Korea, which is keeping deep religious mind, the Daesoon thought that appears newly at the modern times is proposing the 'Haewonsangsaeng'(eliminating resentment and helping one another) as new peace idea of 21th century. In this thought, we can discover the reason of the conflict to appear in the history of mankind. And there is a new idea of peace, that is to say, which is called 'sangsaeng'(mutual aid and cooperation). In this article, centering upon Sangsaeng idea, I try to introduce the new viewpoint of Daesoon thought about the conflict and peace.

  • Saengcheonggukjang, known as Natto in Japan, is a Korean fermented soybean food that has various bioactive compounds for antioxidant and antidiabetic activity. The development of soybean (Glycine max L.) cultivars for saengcheonggukjang production relies on the selection of seed traits that influence the quality and sensory properties. One of the important traits for cultivars is seed characteristics such as seed hardness and size. In order to select the lines for breeding good quality saengcheonggukjang varieties, several simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to seed quality of Korean cultivars, Pungsannamulkong, Socheongja, Pungwon, Heawon, and Hoseo, were analyzed. Based on the many studies to detect stable QTLs for seed traits, we tested several QTLs related to seed size and water absorbability using SSR markers on Korean cultivars. The results showed that two regions for water absorbability of Pungsannamulkong and one region for seed size traits of Haewon and Hoseo were identified in this study. These results could have applications to soybean breeding for seed size and hardness and it is necessary to narrow it down through further study.

  • Pears (Pyrus spp.) have been grown worldwide as a kind of important economical fruits. Over 1,500 accessions collected from countries have been preserved in National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration in Korea. However, redundancies and misidentification are happening in the germplasm preservation due to same cultivars which have different names in various localities (synonyms) and different cultivars which have same names (homonyms). That can lower germplasm management efficiency. The object of this study is to identify synonyms and homonyms in pear germplasms by analyzing genetic variation with four microsatellite markers: CH03d12, CH03g07, CH02b10, and EMPc117. PCR amplification with above 4 microsatellite markers was done for the 31 pear accessions, and the products were analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis. As a result, 7 synonyms and 9 homonyms were identified among 31 pear accessions. We'll compare these genotypes with phenotypes of each pear accessions, and reduces the redundancy and misidentification in pear germplasm collection for the reliable management.

  • Existing reinforced concrete buildings with seismically deficient details have premature failure under earthquake loads. The fiber-reinforced polymer column jacket enhances the lateral resisting capacities with additional confining pressures. This paper aims to quantify the retrofit effect varying the confinement and stiffness-related parameters under three earthquake scenarios and establish the retrofit strategy. The retrofit effects were estimated by comparing energy demands between non-retrofitted and retrofitted conditions. The retrofit design parameters are determined considering seismic hazard levels to maximize the retrofit effects. The critical parameters of the retrofit system were determined by the confinement-related parameters at moderate and high seismic levels and the stiffness-related parameters at low seismic levels.

  • This study presents and examines various ethical theories that could offer potential solutions to the issue of discrimination against non-human animals in contemporary society, and traces its implications for Korean religions. The article focuses on two normative ethical theories - virtue ethics and the ethics of care - and through an analysis of existing research, argues that both theories may serve as foundational principles guiding our behavior, not only in our interactions with other humans but also in our treatment of non-human animals. Furthermore, the examples presented in this study demonstrate that similar ethical theories have already been adopted as frameworks for human behavior towards other living beings within two religious traditions, Buddhism and Daesoon Jinrihoe. In both belief systems, animals are acknowledged as integral components of the world in which we live. Additionally, both religions endorse the idea that the well-being of non-human animals and our attitudes toward them can also have a direct impact on our present lives, as well as on our future existence. Consequently, promoting morally upright conduct towards other living creatures should be viewed as a necessary measure, beneficial not only for the animals themselves but also for the collective well-being of humanity.

  • The performance of an immuno-analytical system can be assessed in terms of its analytical sensitivity, i.e., the detection limit of an analyte, which is determined by the amount of analyte molecules bound to the capture antibody that has been immobilized onto a solid surface. To increase the number of the binding complexes, we have investigated a site-directed immobilization of an antibody that has the ability to resolve a current problem associated with a random arrangement of the insolubilized immunoglobulin. The binding molecules were chemically reduced to produce thiol groups that were limited at the hinge region, and then, the reduced products were coupled to biotin. This biotinylated antibody was bound to a streptavidin-coated surface via the streptavidin-biotin reaction. This method can control the orientation of the antibody molecules present on a solid surface and also can significantly reduce the possibility of steric hindrance in the antigen-antibody reactions. In a two-site immunoassay, the introduction of the site-directly immobilized antibody as the capture enhanced the sensitivity of analyte detection approximately 10 times compared to that of the antibody randomly coupled to biotin. Such a novel approach would offer a protocol of antibody immobilization in order for the possibility of constructing a high performance immunochip.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the risk factors of self-reported voice problem. Data were from the Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey 2008. Subjects were 3,600 persons (1,501 men, 2,099 women) aged 19 years and older. A prediction model was developed by the use of a exhaustive CHAID (Chi Squared Automatic Interaction Detection) algorism of decision tree model. In the decision tree analysis, pain and discomfort during the last 2 weeks, age, the longest occupation and thyroid disorders was significantly associated with self-reported voice problem. The findings of associated factors suggest potential ways of targeting counseling and prevention efforts to control self-reported voice problem.

  • Capillary fringe divides the groundwater and the vadose zone controlling the diffusive mass transfer of contaminants and gases. The thickness of capillary fringe is of great importance for the rate of contaminant mass transfer across the capillary fringe. Application of surface active chemicals including surfactants and alcohol-based products into the subsurface environment changes the surface tension of the aqueous phase, which in turn, affects the thickness of the capillary fringe. In this study, a bench-scale model was used to assess the quantitative relationship between the surface tension and the thickness of the capillary fringe. An anionic surfactant (Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, SDBS) and an aqueous solution of ethanol were used to control the surface tension of the groundwater. It was found that the thickness of the capillary fringe is directly proportional to the surface tension. The air entry pressures measured by the Tempe Pressure Cell at different surface tensions using SDBS (200 mg/L) and ethanol (20%, v/v) solutions were in good agreement with the thicknesses of the capillary fringe measured by the model. A simple method to correct the conventional Brooks-Corey model for estimating the air entry pressure was also presented.

  • Behavioral problems could be easily observed in patients with various mental disorders, and may be inevitable. Self-injurious behavior(SIB) can be defined as a deliberate or subconscious alteration or destruction of one's body without conscious suicidal intent. SIB frequently involves oral tissues and could vary from a trifling injury to damages that could lead to further disabilities. The cases presented in this report discuss oral SIB due to Tic disorder and ADHD and their treatments. Clinicians should be well aware of the possibility of oral SIB in various mental disorders as well as the diverse depths of such behaviors accordingly. Moreover, different treatment modalities should be prioritized according to the causative mental disorders.
